I choose Select Floors based upon their reviews, and feel compelled to write this review so others can see what they are getting from Select Floors after the floors have been installed for a while. In less than 18 months our floors went from looking shiny and new to needing to be refinished. Newly refinished hardwoods should last at least 7-10 years. Granted, we have dogs, but we also Roomba our floors often, sometimes daily, because I know that dirt is hard on hardwoods, and I Dremel the dogs nails to keep them down. Even with this our hardwoods need to be redone. We have a rental property that we redid the hardwoods in in 2010 and they still look like new. A rental property, with renters, and we allow dogs! Also, I made it very, very clear to Marcus that we had dogs and that this needed to be taken into consideration and he still only applied two coats of poly. I'd have happily paid for additional coats to avoid this problem if I'd known. I did a little research and discovered that the minimum number of coats that should be applied to hardwoods is three and that three-four is standard. I assumed that as professionals they knew what they were doing so didn't research the number of coats of poly they should apply. If you're reading this, hopefully this will help you. In fact, some places will give you a reduced price to only apply two coats of finish, because it's below the standard. The only reason to ever consider this is if you are just trying to get the house looking decent before you sell it, and I honestly wouldn't even do it then. I debated giving them two stars because the floors looked good immediately after they were finished, but my experience was much worse than "meh," though of course they could have damaged the floors and made them look bad even from the very beginning. However, I am sick that I paid a significant amount of money to get our floors redone and now need to turn around and get them redone again and not only does that mean spending money to redo them, but it also shortens the overall life of the floor because hardwoods can only be refinished a limited number of times. I'm going to try to attach photos so you can judge for yourself. PS. I forgot to mention that they also didn't install new hardwoods in the kitchen under the appliances which should also be done. They essentially blocked my dishwasher in which would require my granite counter top to be broken to get it out if I weren't going to need to redo the floors in the near future anyway. read more

Marcus at Select floors did a wonderful job at our house with a refinishing of older hardwood and an install of some new hardwood. The finished product looks fantastic. We would definitely recommend them if you are looking for a good quality company and a fair price. The only negative side (and I am sure this is with any company) is the sanding of the floors was a bit dirty. Our freshly painted walls all needed to be wiped down afterward. I wish they were covered or we were made aware of the dust, but no big deal. Overall we are very happy! read more

Let me first state that I have not actually had worked performed by Select Floors. However - I have seen work that they have done, and it was beautiful. A family friend had them install their new floors and we were very impressed when we went over for Thanksgiving dinner. Now that I am in the market for new floors myself, they were one of the companies I called for an estimate. And of all the companies I called, I was definitely most impressed by them. They are not the cheapest, but they also aren't out of the range of reasonable compared to the cheapest, and I believe the expertise, patience, and care they bring to the table more than qualify for the higher price. Marcus, the owner and vice-president, came over to do my estimate. He was afraid he'd be late because of the rain and called me 3 times in the morning to keep me posted on his progress. Ending up arriving precisely on time. :) Learning that this was my first time with doing something like this he spent a while answering every question I had, and explaining all about the process and the different materials. He was very patient and seemed passionate and committed to his work and its quality. I also need to replace the closet doors in the room that needs flooring, and if I don't do it before the floors, it will cause a gap in the boards later when I do get to it. He told me "well of course we'll come back and take care of that when you replace the doors." I assume there would be a small charge for that (although he didn't mention one), but I was impressed by the fact that he would be committed to making sure the job was finished completely, even a year later and because of my making another change, he would come back and help with the last details. A week or so later I went over to the store to check out possible flooring choices - to see the one he had priced out for me, as well as see what else might work - and the staff in the store was just as patient, knowledgable, and committed to getting things done right. My only regret is that I believe I am going to actually do the floors myself, and I won't be able to hire them. I hope that by posting this review here someone else will be able to give them business that they definitely deserve! read more

Select Floors did our hardwood floors 17 years ago, and we recently hired them again as they had the best price. Workers were very careful, considerate, well mannered and worked very hard and dealt with us being in the house this 2nd time around. Select flours has dustless, but still there is plenty of dust. We recently moved out of our home and into a new one. Before putting our old house on the market, we wanted to refinish the hardwood floors throughout it. A close friend has used Select Floors twice in the past and enthusiastically recommended them. She sent me Gene's (one of the owners) cell phone number and urged me to call. I got three estimates for having the floors of my house refinished last year. Select Floors not only quoted the lowest price, but they also had the best reviews, and the owner Gene made a great first impression in person. He was extremely knowledgeable, polite, and accommodating in procuring the special materials needed for a repair to my floor. Everybody from the owner to the work crew was friendly and professional. I had Select Floors come out to install my very expensive, special-order, bamboo hardwood floors in Washington, DC. The salesman seemed friendly so I decided to go with them despite the high price. - The salesman charged me for 2 full days of work when they showed up at 11am the first day, took an hour lunch and left at 4:30. I'm not sure if my math is correct but that is not a full day. The next day they showed up at 9am, took an hour lunch and left at 4:30. 8 hours of work is a full day in my opinion. - They cut corners on my floor and did not do a good job whatsoever. They even put a 6" scratch on 2 pieces of flooring that I wasn't told about. I had to find out on my own. - There are gaps between the floor and the divider between the hardwood and tile. There are 2 big spaces in the flooring itself that run the full length of the room. Usually hardwoods will sit very close to each other. Most of my floor does but like I said there are 2 solid lines the length of my room where the hardwood was not hammered together close enough. - They cut corners installing my quarter-round moldings in my closet and entrance. Would never do business with this company again. read more

As far as I'm concerned, SELECT is the only flooring store on the east coast. This place is highly professional, efficient, prompt, helpful, patient, polite, accommodating, and honest on top of it. The owner Eugene is truly a rarity in the business world today. He spent time educating me on all aspects of hardwood flooring to help me make the proper decision. Eugene's recommendations were never based on higher profit for himself, and even recommended lower cost options when appropriate. I checked out no less than six other flooring places before choosing SELECT. For the identical flooring, their prices were the absolute best. The installers, Freddy and Juan, were magicians! We had all our old carpeting upstairs replaced by finished on site wide-plank red oak. We were so concerned about the anticipated dust and wondered how they would move our furniture. Seamless! My work with this installer is somewhat dated, four years, but there's an advantage, I think. Work has stood the test of time. Select Floors was a referral from the home design company, they let me work with them independently which was a plus, the money I saved could be used for the wood floor selection. The first installation was oak tongue and groove for a massive loft room. Expert left a few samples on the plywood floor so I could see the various shades for the stain, was most helpful to see how exactly it would look for the light in the room. They did that room and the stairs, first class job, excellent result. From there 'we' did the basement floor. Using what they suggested, the material was able to go directly over the concrete floor. My understanding is that it could be sanded if need be, so far, thankfully haven't needed it. It's called a 'floating' floor meaning it doesn't need a sub-floor. Liking that so well, I had Expert install parquet floor tiles to a small guest room. What was great was that I didn't have to go to their showroom...I picked up some samples from Big Box and they knew exactly what it was and matched in color and design. Expert, right? Another thing to like about Expert is that the salesman/ foreman showed up for an inspection each of three times. I showed him a problem I had with a marble threshold by a bathroom door...he installed a wood strip to match up so no more stubbed toes. No charge. Nice. The fellas who came to install were very good, efficient, picked everything up and swept. I tipped them each time, in deference to sore knees...that's tough work. Now when I see an Expert panel truck in a neighborhood I'm visiting, I think, 'Lucky you'. read more
