"You're in trouble when you find it's hard for you to smile…read moreA simple song might make it better for a little while" (Sly and the Family Stone) We were puttering our way through the Torrington Farmers Market, checking out the various fruit, vegetable, and baked goods stands when we happened to stop at the Simple Delights bakery. In about 3 seconds, we knew we'd be buying something here. We saw a nice variety of breads, pastries, cakes, cookies, and muffins. Some were GF. We ended up with a small loaf of Lemon Blueberry bread ($6) and a Cinnamon Roll ($5). The Lemon-Blueberry bread was more like a poundcake than a bread, and it sure was a delicious poundcake at that. It was super moist and very lemony, and since we split it, half of that $6 loaf made for a very yummy and satisfying dessert. The Cinnamon Roll was everything one would want in a Cinnamon Roll! It had sweet flaky pastry layered with that addictive sticky/gooey cinnamon filling, and it was crowned with a light layer of vanilla icing. Pure excellence, and a Simple Delight, indeed.

Shawna the manager goes above and beyond to make sure that guests are always happy. Food is amazing! Always reliable and amazing! Happy Hour has great small bites and a great happy hour drink menu! Did I mention the family meal? I have ordered this meal many times and never been disappointed. It's great when you're having a small party! Last time I think I even ordered two of them ! There were plants everywhere in the dining space, just didn't match up. (The pendant lights were nice but the mismatch could have looked artistic but instead just looked mismatched). Kitchen looked not well kept and disorganized. Our wait staff was very informal and not consistent, had to ask for silverware when salad was served. When pizza came had to replace silverware because when they removed salad bowls took the silverware. Salad was good, but was surprised the salad dressing came out in take out containers since we were at a sit down dinner. It felt like we were at a take out place. We ordered the pizza special butternut squash, onions, bacon and cheese, didn't realize it was going to be a white pizza, the toppings were disproportionate, heavy on bacon (was too salty), after the first bite not so great.

They're known for their gourmet cookies and cinnamon rolls, including gluten free options. I missed out on the cinnamon rolls since they were already sold out, but I keep hearing they're out of this world so that alone is reason to go back. We left with chocolate chip, smores, oatmeal raisin, gingersnap and peanut butter cookies that were amazing! I also loved all the unique items they carry like hot sauces and pickles, which makes it more than just a cookie stop. Definitely worth a visit and next time I'm going earlier.

Place was cute & clean, and I quickly left a few minutes later with some tasty goodies. I had ordered a Pumpkin Cinnamon Roll, along with two cookies -- an Apple Cider and a S'mores. Total came to $16.10, a bit pricey, but it was well worth it. My wife was very satisfied, her sweet fix taken care of. We will certainly be back, Calos Cookies makes incredible baked goods, and now we have an outstanding place in town for an occasional decadent treat. Life is good !

"When I get home tonight I'm gonna hold her tight…read moreI'm gonna love her till the cows come home" (Lennon and McCartney) Another reason why I love Yelp! When I saw my Yelp friends Ana and Kim both review this very cool place, well I kind of made my mind up that I'd check it out too. I mean, how can you resist going to a store that has no employees, and you pay for whatever you buy on the honor system, either electronically or putting your dinero into a cash box. The store is small, but jam packed with frozen foods, ice cream, fudge, honey, jarred goods, coffee, goat and cow soap products, clothes, jewelry, a full dairy case of milks, eggs, and cheese, and more. We ended up buying a frozen portion of ground veal at a great price- just $7 for close to a pound. The purchase came at the perfect time for us because we needed it for our Thanksgiving meatballs recipe. So go take a ride to the country and check out this unique place. You'll have a blast poking around and looking at the many cows next to the store. In fact the whole experience is a pretty cool one.

In the center of the property is the store. There's no one working here. The store is completely self assist. Now, don't think of trying anything funny, there are cameras watching you. This store is precious! Here you can find cheese, milk, ice cream, local meat and eggs. You'll also find their own branded, handcrafted soap, candles, and skin care. Their soaps are beautifully made and smell delightful, and make excellent pairings with their candles. How do you pay if no one is working here? Well, first it's good to be honest, and trustworthy. They're trusting you to be alone in their tiny store, with their carefully curated and handmade products. By the door, there is a notebook, in which you can write what you're purchasing. You can pay by inserting cash into a red box, or you can pay on Venmo. Their prices are a bit higher. I truly enjoyed browsing through this little store. There are so many tasty looking and smelling items. Please take the drive and check them out for yourself.
