Food: We had the hummus with bread as an appetizer. I ordered the beef fillet (comes with rice, potato & tomato) & hubby had the Tava kebab. To drink we had the black tea with honey & ginger. For dessert we had the Persian baklava. The hummus appetizer was okay. Hummus tasted good but the bread was a bit dry & not tasty. I think a better bread would've elevated this appetizer. I enjoyed the beef fillet a lot. The meat was nicely seasoned & not dry though I asked for it to be well done. There was a lot of saffron rice (so yummy), some slices of potato & a bbq tomato. I added the hummus to my plate too. It was a very satisfying meal. My tummy was happy. So happy I felt like I was going into a food coma. LOL. Hubby enjoyed his Tava kebab. The meat (beef & lamb) was moist & also seasoned well. He really liked the chopped tomato. But he didn't like the oil sitting on the bottom of his pan that the dish came in. He loved the potato that also came with his dish. He said it was crispy on the outside & soft on the inside. A whole plate of rice came with the Tava kebab. The Persian baklava was more like a pound cake than Greek baklava. It was dry for our taste but at least it was warm & had good flavour. Perhaps a bit of honey on top would have made it more moist? The black tea with honey & ginger was so delicious! The honey & ginger flakes came in a small dish. You pour the black tea in your cup then take a spoonful of the honey ginger & mix it in. I've never had tea in that style before but I liked it. The lady serving us said it was a homemade recipe. Service: There was only one server today. A lovely woman. She was nice & courteous as well. When we walked in around 12.30pm the restaurant was empty. After about 30 minutes more people started coming in. The lady served everyone very efficiently. The meal was well paced. We got the appetizer first & then our main dishes came out soon after. We had time to enjoy our food thoroughly. I didn't feel rushed at all, like some places. We got to sit for a bit & digest as well as drink tea while other people were served. We then ordered dessert afterwards. Ambiance: There is some interesting art work on one side of the wall in the restaurant. On the other wall are shelves with some framed art as well as decor pieces like fake plants. It's a bit cluttered looking for my taste but it's tastefully done. We sat in a booth beside the wall with the framed art & shelves. The decor is yellow upholstered wooden chairs with dark wood tones. The booths match the tables. Washrooms are in the basement down a flight of stairs. There is no handicap washroom on the main level. The lights were not on in the hallway to the women's washroom so that was a little irritating. I couldn't find the hallway light switch. Inside the women's washroom the light was also not on. Luckily the switch was beside the door so I found it quickly. You would think that one of the first things they would do when opening the restaurant for the day would be to make sure all the lights are on. It was a minor irritation. On my way out of the ladies I found the light switch in the hall & turned it on as another lady was coming my way. She said thank you. LOL. Hubby says the men's washroom was clean but it had an unpleasant smell. I suspect the smell was from another patron. I saw a man go downstairs to use the washroom before hubby did. LOL. Overall: Herby is a cozy little restaurant & the food is great! I can see why it has such a good rating. I think a little attention to the washroom area would've been nice. It was kind of irritating to be walking down a dark hallway trying to find where the women's washroom was. The men's washroom was at the bottom of the (lighted) steps & easy to find. I thought the prices were reasonable for the food portions & the quality. Our total bill came to 92.10. The experience at the restaurant I think was worth it. I would come back to this restaurant to eat if I'm in the area.

When we arrived, the smallish restaurant was packed with diners (only about 7-8 table in all) and there was a line up of people who were waiting for their takeout orders. We ended up getting our order 55 minutes after, not 30 minutes as we were told on the phone, so minus 1 star. Since it was our first time trying the restaurant, I ordered more food than we needed for our dinner to share with my in-laws who live nearby; family combo 2 and lamb neck dish. Little did I know that both orders would come with humongous portion of rice, which took us forever to finish. The family combo came with 2 juicy strips of well-seasoned koobideh, 1 skewer of breast and 1 skewer of dark meat joojeh kabob, 4 char-grilled tomatoes and good amount of grilled chilies (not spicy). The lamb neck dish included 3, fall-off-the-bone tender lamb pieces that were impossibly delicious. We opted for the rice with fava beans for this dish and it was super flavourful with addition of dill and other herbs. The overall first experience here was good and I hope to try out more of their offerings soon.

There is always that initial visual impact of being served that aesthetically-pleasing, enormous rice meal. The meals, big as they are, should be sufficient for 2 people to share. It will be even good enough for 3 people who are light eaters. The rice comes in 2 types and there is also some butter available to lather onto the rice. I personally do find it a little gimmicky and the meal sizes just a product of clever visual marketing. Most of what makes the whole portion sizes big is made up of rice which is not really a high value product item. The actual food itself or the protein while more than the typical meal elsewhere, is still not proportionate to the amount of carbohydrates that you get here. Later on in the meal, you would naturally get full fast if you try to balance out eating the food portions with the amount of rice served. We ordered the Baghali Polo & Lamb Shank ($25.99), Ghemei (Veal) Stew ($18.99), and the pureed eggplant dish Mirza Ghasemi ($11.99). The eggplant is highly recommended to have for starters. The cubed veal stew that we ordered pairs well with the saffron basmati rice. Their stew dish also comes with potato chips on the side to add some crunchy texture to the meal experience. I personally did not like how the lamb shank came out. I find it a a little undercooked. The muscle fibers of the thick meat chunk was not tender enough for my liking and the meat did not properly hold onto the rich flavors of the sauce it was cooked with. The whole dining experience was excellent. Our servers were very nice and polite. There were Persian decorations in the space, and some traditional music playing in the background.

After some comprehensive Yelp and Google searching, I decided to suggest Faryab. It turned out to be a rather good idea. They have a Faryab family meal for $53.99. It comes with a skewer platter (2 koobideh, two skewers of different kinds of chicken, and one skewer of beef chunks of some sort), a plate of qabili palaw with one lamb shank, a small plate of salad, and a basket of naan. The skewers were tasty and beautifully presented. The qabili palaw was large enough to feed 4 and the lamb shank was very tender. I wish there had been more lamb shank though. The lamb to rice ratio was rather lacking. The salad was salad and the naan could have been fresher, but all in all, it was a very satisfying meal. The chaplee kabob was $13.99. It came with two very flat, very crispy, seasoned beef patties over basmati rice, and a bowl of chopped tomatoes, onions, spices, all topped with a chili pepper. Safe, but tasty. We also got the zereshk polo for $14.99. The chicken was juicy and the rice was tasty. Tl;dr: Some Chinese aunties and uncles discover that they like long grained rice studded with dried fruit.
