I love Persian food and dining at Herby Restaurant with my friend was such a positive experience. The person serving us was attentive and accommodating. We were seated at the sidewalk patio which was the only space we could sit with a dog. Water was offered to him by a waiter right away. We chose a shared plate package because it was a versatile combination (appetizer, main and dessert plus Persian tea), just perfect for giving my friend a taste of Persian cuisine. The highlight of our dining was waiter's smiley face every time we mentioned we loved the food as if we made his day. Truly, this food was nourishing and healthy and yummy. I was grateful for being able to have my dog with me, but because he still has to work on his manners, next time I'd rather enjoy a lovely atmosphere without having to guard such good food. The eggplant, pomegranate, saffron, etc. just to name a few lovely ingredients. And a cup of Persian tea to seal the deal. My biggest joy was my friend enjoying our visit to Herby. Food: We had the hummus with bread as an appetizer. I ordered the beef fillet (comes with rice, potato & tomato) & hubby had the Tava kebab. To drink we had the black tea with honey & ginger. For dessert we had the Persian baklava. The hummus appetizer was okay. Hummus tasted good but the bread was a bit dry & not tasty. I think a better bread would've elevated this appetizer. I enjoyed the beef fillet a lot. The meat was nicely seasoned & not dry though I asked for it to be well done. There was a lot of saffron rice (so yummy), some slices of potato & a bbq tomato. I added the hummus to my plate too. It was a very satisfying meal. My tummy was happy. So happy I felt like I was going into a food coma. LOL. Hubby enjoyed his Tava kebab. The meat (beef & lamb) was moist & also seasoned well. He really liked the chopped tomato. But he didn't like the oil sitting on the bottom of his pan that the dish came in. He loved the potato that also came with his dish. He said it was crispy on the outside & soft on the inside. A whole plate of rice came with the Tava kebab. The Persian baklava was more like a pound cake than Greek baklava. It was dry for our taste but at least it was warm & had good flavour. Perhaps a bit of honey on top would have made it more moist? The black tea with honey & ginger was so delicious! The honey & ginger flakes came in a small dish. You pour the black tea in your cup then take a spoonful of the honey ginger & mix it in. I've never had tea in that style before but I liked it. The lady serving us said it was a homemade recipe. Service: There was only one server today. A lovely woman. She was nice & courteous as well. When we walked in around 12.30pm the restaurant was empty. After about 30 minutes more people started coming in. The lady served everyone very efficiently. The meal was well paced. We got the appetizer first & then our main dishes came out soon after. We had time to enjoy our food thoroughly. I didn't feel rushed at all, like some places. We got to sit for a bit & digest as well as drink tea while other people were served. We then ordered dessert afterwards. Ambiance: There is some interesting art work on one side of the wall in the restaurant. On the other wall are shelves with some framed art as well as decor pieces like fake plants. It's a bit cluttered looking for my taste but it's tastefully done. We sat in a booth beside the wall with the framed art & shelves. The decor is yellow upholstered wooden chairs with dark wood tones. The booths match the tables. Washrooms are in the basement down a flight of stairs. There is no handicap washroom on the main level. The lights were not on in the hallway to the women's washroom so that was a little irritating. I couldn't find the hallway light switch. Inside the women's washroom the light was also not on. Luckily the switch was beside the door so I found it quickly. You would think that one of the first things they would do when opening the restaurant for the day would be to make sure all the lights are on. It was a minor irritation. On my way out of the ladies I found the light switch in the hall & turned it on as another lady was coming my way. She said thank you. LOL. Hubby says the men's washroom was clean but it had an unpleasant smell. I suspect the smell was from another patron. I saw a man go downstairs to use the washroom before hubby did. LOL. Overall: Herby is a cozy little restaurant & the food is great! I can see why it has such a good rating. I think a little attention to the washroom area would've been nice. It was kind of irritating to be walking down a dark hallway trying to find where the women's washroom was. The men's washroom was at the bottom of the (lighted) steps & easy to find. I thought the prices were reasonable for the food portions & the quality. Our total bill came to 92.10. The experience at the restaurant I think was worth it. Delicious Persian food in a beautiful space with great service. To start, we had the Kashke Bademjan, BBQ eggplant searved with delicious bread. It was a lovely way to start the meal as the walnuts and fried onions gave the dish some interesting texture. For mains, we had the Tava Kebab, which is beef and lamb pan fried on the bottom of a pan. Almost like a thin meatloaf but with an absolute bomb of flavors. This is my first time trying Persian food! The atmosphere of the restaurant was very nice and comfortable, the waitstaff was extremely friendly, attentive and patient with our party. If there was an award for "Best Iranian Restaurant in Toronto / GTA", or "The Most Vegetarian-Friendly Iranian Restaurant in the GTA", I'd nominate Herby to win the #1 award. The menu has a lot of variety, especially the stews and appetizers / sides. The owner & head chef came out to greet us, explained some menu items, and came out a few times to chat to see how the food was, etc. Very friendly, hospitable, and accommodating. They made some special dishes and added a few extras (such as the mixed vegetarian kebabs with grilled tofu, eggplant, mushrooms, and onion) for us. The waiter was also excellent and provided great hospitable service. The location is easy to get to - right on Danforth Avenue (steps away from Chester subway station, which also has Green P parking right across the street). If that parking lot is full, there are lots of street parking in the small streets along Danforth. The food was probably the best out of all the Iranian restaurants I've tried in Toronto. Every stew could be customized to be vegetarian (with tofu or mushrooms instead of meat). Each stew / main dish also came with lots of choices. You can get each stew with all rice, half rice & half salad, or upgrade the rice to Gazmakh (rice with crispy fried potato from the bottom of a pan). AND it also comes with another choice of side (choose from appetizer selection such as salad or one of the yogurt options). Our orders: - Mast o Khiar (yogurt mixed with chopped cucumber, herbs, and garlic, garnished with rose petals): Our favourite out of all the yogurts. The herbs and garlic really stood out, and the cucumber added a nice chunkiness to the overall texture. The rose petals on top made it even more aromatic. - Spinach Borani (yogurt mixed with steamed baby spinach and garlic): Yummy with side order of bread. - Shirazi Salad (chopped cucumber, tomato, and red onion, seasoned with Persian spices and lemon): Nice and refreshing, good seasoning with Persian spices. - Tofu & Grilled Vegetables Skewers: These are included in the Vegetarian Sampler, or you can order them separately. They were grilled really well. - Gheymeh Bademjan (tomato-based stew with fried eggplant and yellow lentils, topped with baby grapes and potato chips): Very hearty and tasty! Our favourite stew of the night. - Khoresht Karafs (Persian celery stew with parsley, mint, and Persian spices): A bit watery but tasted light, refreshing, and healthy. - Gazmakh (rice with crispy fried potato from the bottom of a pan): This dish contained the same long-grain rice as the one that comes with the main dish, but with a thin crispy layer on top and a thin layer of crispy potato slices. - Sides of: zereshk (barberries), grilled tomato, grilled onion, bread (loved the bread.. crunchy exterior, soft inside, with sesame seeds on top - perfect accompaniment for the yogurt dips) Everything tasted delicious, healthy, and filling. Delicious Persian food cooked to perfection. Beef koobideh was juicy and flavourful. Even chicken breast, which is often overcooked at other restaurants, was reasonably juicy and soft. The homemade hummus was impeccable. Dessert-wise, I recommend Persian baklava cake or saffron & pistachio ice cream. I will be back here in the future when I'm craving Persian food. Definitely not your typical olive dish and over the top with flavor - Ghorme Sabzi - I thought the ones I made were pretty good till I tried Herby's. My meal here continues my love for Persian food. It wasn't busy when I visited, but it was a weeknight and parking around the area seems to be sparse, so understandable. The cocktail that I got had Persian vodka and lime syrup in it, which was very strong and sweet, but according to the server, was their least sweet cocktail. My entree, the prince platter, was near perfection. I was a tad sad that I couldn't sub out their salad for another, but I'm glad I couldn't because the salad was just as good as the other sides in the meal. The meats were indeed "juicy" (as that's a cooking preference that you can ask for), and the tomato, onion and rice complemented them favorably. I don't have any good Persian spots back home, so I'm glad this will be my last Persian meal until my next spot at an unknown time and place, haha. read more

The server was lovely and talkative, giving us each recommendations based on our tastes. The owner and chef is very friendly! He's very willing to take feedback and tries to accommodate our tastes, where applicable. He's adorable and checked in with us to make sure our meals were to our liking. The owner also provided us a complementary porridge for an appetizer! The food is pretty good overall--definitely something I haven't eaten much of before. The flavour profile definitely isn't something I'm accustomed to, so I can't say for sure if it's something I'd come back to eat again. The price point is also quite high. The salad shirazi was yummy which is why I gave two stars. We were so excited to try the main courses but they definitely didn't meet expectations. The rice was way over cooked and mushy. Hence I decided to try their homemade saffron and pistachio sandwich ice cream. Its big, flavourful and filling. Ok, first of all, I think this is the worse name for an adult restaurant. I'm thinking Chuck e cheese is a step up. Regardless, we had to try it. It's excellent! Four of us had drinks to start. Wine and beer were both chilled, bonus. I love that there's a button at the table to alert your server that you need them. Despite being the only people in the restaurant, we still had to be jerks and give it a push once in a while. It works! We started with the lentil soup. Delicious but I can't really call it a soup. It was a very heavy stew. We had ordered the eggplant dip and the hummus to start. They all came together with a plate of warm crispy pita. Eggplant dip had a bit of tang. We loved it. Hummus was pretty good, but I wasn't raving. We also ordered the wings. That was a bit of a letdown. They were a bit rubbery with a small drizzle of bbq sauce across them. I don't recommend them but honestly, why would we order wings in a Persian restaurant. Ordered the small potatoes to go with them. Tasty. We also had the chicken breast dinner with rice and salad. I didn't eat this but the plates were wiped clean so I have to assume it was excellent. We will definitely be back to try some of the stews. read more

Excellent Persian food on the Danforth. Every dish tasted like good home cooking, made with love and presented with care--the kind of home cooking you'd get when you have dinner guests. The platter for two, which comes with two appetizers, two stews, two BBQs, and saffron rice, is a good way to sample a range of items from their menu. Vegetarian versions of any of their stews are available, if requested. We were also treated to some small bowls of hearty soup on the house. The soup, we were told, was a potential future menu addition. The chef explained that the menu, which is based on recipes from the Azerbaijani region of Iran (not to be confused with Azerbaijan, the country), was still evolving (the restaurant was just three weeks old at the time of our visit) and more dishes would be added over time. Vegetarians beware! I normally only leave highly positive reviews on Yelp, but this time I (and all of my dinner companions) felt it was important to share with you. The 4 of us ordered 3 appetizers and 2 vegetarian stews to share: the dolma (grape leaves), kashk e bade Jan (egg plant dip), pickled vegetables ($5 for a very very small portion), ghormeh sabzi and fesenjan. We were all pretty shocked by the small size of the stew portions- there was only 1 small bowl for each (the waitress said that the meat versions look bigger but still contain the same amount of food) and the salad that came with the $17-$19 stew entree was the size of a sauce dipping bowl. For the price and also portions at equivalent restaurants like Pomegranate on college, this felt extremely shocking. We were still quite famished after sharing. As native Torontonians who have dined at our fair share of establishments, the portion size to price ratio felt extremely jarring - we've never felt hungry to this extent anywhere else after spending close to $70. It was for sure a disappointing experience for us vegetarians - it may be different if you eat meat and order the kebobs but vegetarians please take note! Service: 5/5 - Service was very attentive and we mentioned this portion issue to the waitress and she did ask her manager for a discount. My friend discovered this restaurant on Yelp while looking for a place to catch up over a good meal. The atmosphere wasn't too hectic for a Saturday night, so thankfully we chatted the evening away. Now onto the food... We decided to order the Sample Tray for Two which includes two stews and appetizers of your choice, a plate of beef kebab and BBQ chicken (with rice), and two desserts with black tea. The tray is priced pretty well and is very filling. I would recommend if you are super hungry! That being said, everything we chose was delicious. The Kashk e Bademjan appetizer was rather addictive. The stews (Ghormen Sabzi and Fesenjan) were very flavourful and the meat was nice and tender, particularly the beef. The dessert and tea at the very end was a special touch thanks to the presentation. Unfortunately, they were out of baklava that day, but the date balls and Persian cookies did not disappoint. The waiter was very kind and attentive. The chef also popped out later on in the meal to see how we were doing. The restaurant opened only a few months ago, nevertheless I'm impressed with the overall service and quality of the food. I came here because blogTO raves about it. I've never had Persian food before so this is my first encounter. Herby has been opened for 6 months and though we were going to try the Piti we ended up getting the sampler platter for two for variety. We had the Kashk e Bademjan, Ash Reshteh, Gheymeh, Fesenjan, beef kebab, BBQ chicken breast and Persian Baklava cake and black tea! Oh man the BBQ chicken breast is phenomenal I don't know how they made it but it's not dry. The Fesenjan was a bit fairly tart and I wasn't expecting that so I was a bit thrown off by it, nevertheless it was interesting. It's like tamarind but not and more tart? Lol I can't even explain it. The cake and tea at the end was also really good. You drink the tea after taking a bite of the sugar drop that way the spices in the sugar is enhanced. At least that's the traditional way of having the tea. All in all it was a great first experience and definitely will come back to try the piti next time! First time eating at a Persian restaurant and I have nothing to compare with. Just gonna go with my tastebuds. Food 4/5 - we choose the 2-person sampling platter special. Got two choices of appetizer (we chose Kashke - eggplant dip & Shirazi salad). Both taste okay. Personally not a big fan of this eggplant dip but the portion size is more than I expected. 2 choices of stew which we picked Ghormeh Sazbi & Fesenjan. Fesenjan was delicious. Sweet and a bit tangy. The beef and bbq chicken skewers are good. The meat was slightly overcooked in my opinion. We love the saffron rice and the crispy rice came with the skewers. For dessert, we wanted the Persian Baklava Cake and Saffron Ice cream but both ran out. It was surprising to us coz it wasn't that late of the night yet (8:30 pm). We end up picking the regular Baklava and Persian cookie. There was only one small cookie on the plate and tasted pretty ordinary. It was quite underwhelming and should have at least 2-3 cookies instead. The baklava was standard and decent in size, which made up for the cookie. Service 4/5 - It would have been a 3 stars. But the manager/supervisor shared with us that they short a server. He acknowledged and apologized for the lacking in service and gave us free soups while we waited for our food. It's good that he communicated with us and compensated us for the extra time we waited. The chicken soup was decent. Value 4/5 - we enjoyed all the food and were very full at the end of the dinner for spending around $60 incling tax and tips. That's quite decent for a restaurant on Danforth! I will preface this review by saying I'm not all that familiar with Persian food aside from shawarma Joints. We felt like something different and my wife had a place picked out, but I insisted it had to be one of those 2 for 1 deals you can find on uber eats. after searching and reading reviews we settled on trying Herby. Danforth restaurants excel in offering places that are not big commercial joints which we wAnted. We ordered the loobia polo and koobideh both offering 2 servings for the price of 1. I had additionally made a thai chicken curry at home to pair with the rice in the koobideh. All 4 portions were large and combined offered more than enough to cover us for 2 dinners. The Loobia Polo was incredible. Simple yet so flavourful, I told my wife that surely this must be a Persian at home staple dish. So good. My 2 year old loved it too. The Koobideh was also simple but good -- not as good as the Loobia polo though! We were able to use the ample rice in the Koobideh with the chicken curry I had prepared. The skewer of meat was good as well. While the dishes we tried were simple, they were really wholesome. I will definitely order from here again and maybe try other dishes. I drove all the way from Richmondhill with a friend from Mississauga just to try this place. Pros: - fair prices: I hope it does not change -Awesome presentation- we got the tray, it was beautifully put together and would allow you to try multiple dishes, very playful and fun to share if you are going on a date or wanna catch up wirh a friend over food. -amazing owner- Javad loves what he does and he treated us to organic home made apricot jam, which he made from scratch and rose pedal jam , the flower cane from this little village in Iran. At first we found it odd to have jam for dessert, he brought us bread and butter and then we realized the jam was so nice that we could have it without the bread and jam... just a nice finish to the meal. - amazing wall hangings, photos were gorgeous. Decor was nice - the water was very friendly - salad shirazi's dressing was to die for! Not everyone knows how to do proper shirazi dressing -cons: oh man, PARKING spot on danforth!!! We had to look for one for 40 min, but maybe because it was Saturday night - maybe we need a little bit more rice for trays that are shared between 2 people because Persians have rice with the stew (it comes with 2 types) and the kebab itself, and 2 People need to share that one portion of rice. - they are new, and adjusting, because of good reviews a lot of people came in and they were not expecting that big of a crowd, so service can be lacking at times, but we did not mind at all because they were super nice and friendly and they do you good if you didn't get good service. I.e our drinks never showed up and we had to wait to get water till later in the middle of our meal, so they did not charge us for the water.... also they explained why the service was a bit slow, so we did not mind it at all and overall we could sit there enjoy the beautiful restaurant and chill, so we had an awesome time. Javad also explained about his passion for making food, the story behind the name 'herby' and some of the gorgeous photos they hung to the wall, among which the pomegranate one was amongst the most beautiful ones. Overall, a nice family own eatery, and I would go back for sure... I love all the love and care that's behind the details, and care about that more than the food itself. And I'm sure the service will improve once they have more wait staff. Authentic tasting Persian/Iranian food. It is expensive but the portion sizes are huge. Also, a lot of the dishes are beautifully created and plated. My hubby and I went here for lunch and tried the koobideh, stew, and some desserts. I thought all of them were really tasty. The server was also nice and gave good recommendations, and the chef passed by after our meal to say hello. Great ambiance, great food. I really enjoyed it here! read more

Unpretentious home style Persian cuisine in a comfortable atmosphere. Reasonable prices and excellent quality. Very happy with all of the stews, excellent kebab, and all appetizers are well recommended. Take time to linger over the excellent Persian black tea it is delicious and good for the digestion.
