They are less than helpful. They do not answer the phone or call back, however they love adding late fees when you cannot access them to pay your bill. They have an online bill pay which is not accessible do to it not allowing you to set up an account. It sends you through a loop. When you call to get help they do not answer or call back. Each year the rent goes up. Not a valuable service when they do not provide customer service. read more

First off I'll say the quality of the storage units are what you'd get anywhere. Although in our case this year, when we returned to our unit the door was jammed, and when the office manager came to assist us the door fell off the tracks in her hands when she finally got it un-jammed. But there are some things you should now about how they charge. First even if they quote a certain amount a month, there is a mandatory minimum insurance charge of $10 monthly. (For $2000 of value) There is a $22 dollar charge to set up an account. Even if you had an account previously. In our case we were promised a prorated last month based on days used, provided we gave 10 days notice in writing (email OK). This was said to me in person, and subsequently on the phone. However when we did that, they went ahead and billed the entire last month because we didn't cancel the autopay. I would have thought that a written/email cancellation would have stopped an auto pay bill but it apparently did not. Also I'll challenge you to find that option on their site in your account. After back and forth emails complaining I went through their contract very carefully and could not find that provision. I inquired about the fact it was not in the contract, and they said, and I quote "It will no mention that in the lease because we are a month to month lease, this is something that we do for students." (Lifted from email). I asked one last time for a refund, which was ignored so I am writing this review, and filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. So in conclusion be very careful that you understand the contract and extra charges at Secure Self Storage. read more

Ithaca NY is the location of the Self-Storage business I am rating. The location was perfect for our move with its wide roads for bigger trucks and a great variety of unit sizes. Randall has always been informative and accommodating to all of our needs. We moved from Boston to Ithaca. We never have a problem with the secure gate. Worst customer service ever. Beyond rude. The storage unit was full of dirt and spiders. They were so lazy that they took a golf cart 3 sheds down from the office to the rental shed. When I came back from break and went to get my stuff, there was a sign on the door that said, "Be back in 30 - Went to bank." They didn't open the door for an HOUR AND FIFTEEN MINUTES! Also, they were in there, cleaning up sandwiches that they ate for lunch, and were not at the bank. read more

These people are crooks--beware. It's not just the $22 "administrative fee" they tack on, nor the $10 "insurance fee." Even if you pay all this up front and leave the unit on time, they will send you threatening emails with "Delinquency Notification" in the title claiming you didn't pay your bill and owe still more fees--giving specific amounts to pay that are completely made up. It's easily enough to frighten well-meaning customers into sending money. If you call the manager, he'll say, "Those emails are sent by 'corporate,' it's out of my control." He'll say, as if doing you a big favor, "Just throw those emails in the trash." What a great guy! What he doesn't tell you is that he and 'corporate' have been doing this for years! We had the exact same thing happen with the same manager two years ago. Do yourself a huge favor and go elsewhere. Why use a storage facility that's bending over backwards to defraud you? read more

Writing this specifically because of the great service I received this morning from Becca. I emptied out my unit yesterday and called this morning within a half hour of their opening time to cancel my account. All she asked me was what my unit number was and when I told her she said, 'Yes, I saw that. You are all set." So she had already done a walk through of the entire property and somehow saw one lock that was there yesterday was not there this morning. We had our items in the unit for 7 months. Setting up the account was easy, we always had easy access to the unit and everything stayed safe and dry. read more

So I agree that this place had the worst customer service ever. But its now under new management and so far they seem pretty decent. Why did I put up for horrible service? Because my daughter goes to Cornell and I wanted her to be in a safe area and unit. This place has far better set up, lighting and security than the other places. Maybe the other places were nicer on the phone but their places were so far away and creepy. There are older people there now that always wave when I drive in. Not sure what the guy was complaining about for the gate in another review. Its always worked for me but it is a long security code so maybe he forgot his number. We've had a unit for three years and while I wish we had other options, particularly inside storage units, when it comes to Ithaca this is the best you are going to find. read more

PSA: Do NOT rent from Secure Self Storage! This is my first Yelp review. I usually like to simply walk away from bad businesses, without putting energy into the situation, but I feel others in the Ithaca area should be warned. (I wish I had been). I needed to store my stuff ASAP (apartment was flooded) and they were the only ones with open units. I now know why...expensive and very, very mean to their customers. The first day I moved in, there was a management lock on my unit, which I needed to be removed. I left my 74 year old father in front of the unit with a moving van, and went to the main office. A woman drove out on a golf cart to unlock the unit. When she arrived, she began yelling at my father to move so she could drive right up to the unit on her cart to unlock it. At first he didn't understand what she wanted. She stayed firmly on her cart and continued yelling at him to move everything out of the way so she could right drive up to the door of the unit. He then started lifting heavy boxes to move them out of the way as quickly as possible. It was ridiculous. I've never seen anything like this. I intervened, and she eventually parked the cart and walked over to the unit to unlock it. A month later, my first monthly invoice arrived. It included the original charges for the unit, which I had paid for in the office on the day I signed the lease. I called the office, and a man answered the phone. He immediately became extremely defensive and kept saying the amount is "what's owed". I explained that I had already paid the initial charges, and had the receipt. Mistakes happen, that's fine, but I don't want to pay for something twice. He became angrier and angrier. I was actually trying to calm HIM down. At one point I stopped him and I actually asked him to "please be kind" because he was becoming so hostile. I ended up hanging up, and will be sending the them a copy of the receipt (thankfully I kept it). I hope they remove the charges and figure this out, because after the failed phone call, I honestly don't know how to communicate with them. (No email...only a phone number) Hopefully they accept the copy of the receipt I sent them. Otherwise, I guess I will have to pay the original fees twice just to keep them from throwing my stuff out of the unit? Avoid these people!!! read more

we recently used this storage facility. Being from Florida I had no idea what to expect, only seeing what the company website had to offer and a phone call to the business, I still had some hesitation. My daughter was at college in Cornell and we needed to store her stuff for summer. I was torn because I was not sure if I should have gotten a air conditioned storage unit or not, when I spoke to Ithaca self storage they assured me that the non air-conditioned units would be fine, plus I called around and the prices of the air-conditioned units were super expensive. We went with Ithaca self storage and it worked out perfectly, Everything in the unit stayed dry and perfect even her fridge and television. Beyond unacceptable customer service. I had recently reserved a storage unit at this site and was trying to get more information about the services provided by the facility. Every call that I made during the business hours posted on site routed me to the corporate customer center, which had very polite agents but did not have the ability to answer my questions. They told me that they would leave a message with the site manager to have him call me back, but I never received a call back. I tried again the next business day around 2:30pm, again within listed business hours, only to have no one pick up. Finally, on the third try, a woman picks up, asks me how she can help, ONLY to have her cut me off midway through my question to say that she sees that I've called a couple times before and that they're on lunch until 3:30pm before HANGING UP on me. This is perhaps the worst customer experience I've been through ever as I'm still in shock that someone could possibly run a business this way. Mark this one as AVOID. read more

Great place to store your items. Management was great very friendly they took care of my needs for storage. I thought I needed to rent a 10x20 unit but after talking to the manager there they saved me money by getting me in a smaller unit 10x15. Well secured and gated with plenty of lighting at night. I was able to access my unit after hours beyond the office hours. Looking For Storage rent here I think its the best in the Ithaca Area. read more

Definitely AVOID if you can. Their customer service is beyond your imagination. I was assigned to a unit which was still using by another customer. When I asked to switch, I was told I have to repay the new unit and my payment to the previous unit cannot be refunded. Also, they are charging me about $10 higher the price each month than the number written on the lease, and once I was charged for a merchant I never purchased!! Their customer representatives find all kinds of reasons to argue with you if you try to talk with them. I would strongly recommend to avoid this place because simply you cannot predict how much you will be charged and what the worst service you will get. read more
