Stuck in "The Crossing" and need to chill for a bit? This is a cool place to go and relax if you want to avoid the Green Giant and Timmies. Comfort is the name of the game here, the place is full of large leather armchairs and love seats. The store is neat and clean and the staff serve your bevvys with a smile. The coffee and lattes are fairly standard, no tea worth a mention either. Their trend to go more organic and fair trade is nice to see and worth a mention though. Free wi-fi lets your sip your latte and surf the net while you wait for your companion to complete their shopping or you just need a break from the big-box stores (I require frequent breaks!). Not the largest Second Cup in the city but it does just fine. Staff have always been friendly and helpful. Maybe I don't look for these things since I don't have a car, but I believe this is also the only Second Cup in the city with a drive-thru. read more

For ~2 years this Second Cup has been one of my go-to places to get some work done at a spot other than my home office! There aren't a lot of spots to go in the Burnside/Dartmouth North area, especially now that the Darkside Cafe has been closed down. Even if there were though, this coffee shop would still be one of my favourites! 1. The staff here is consistently some of the most genuinely friendly and happy that I've experienced in customer service roles. 2. One of the regular staff is/was bilingual (French/English) and would happily let me practice my French with her when ordering and doing a bit of chatting if it wasn't too busy. 3. There is a nice variety of seating available with electrical outlets near most tables. (E.g. long table for 6+ people, 4-person tables, 2-person tables, four comfortable chairs and a counter along the front window with ~4 taller chairs) 4. They have the best drinks as far as coffee chains are concerned! 5. Their rewards program is easy to use and rewards accumulate quickly. 6. It's in the middle of Dartmouth Crossing, so it's close to lots of shops if you need to run errands or just on the road to Halifax, Dartmouth or Truro. Some of my favourite things to order are: - Dark Chocolate Frozen "hot" chocolate - Orange FroCho (it tastes like drinking an orange Creamsicle!) - Blueberry muffin (made with Greek yogurt for greater protein content) - Sumatra coffee - Vanilla bean hot chocolate - Pumpkin Spice Latte (I've tried versions from every coffee shops each year & keep coming back to this as the best) - seasonal maple leaf shortbreads - Chocolate peanut butter oat cake - Harvest Berry tea (This is a wildberry tea made with their apple cider mix & it is PHENOMENAL! The perfect drink for one of those grey or rainy days.) I will admit that I'm not super into their food or baked goods; the former I haven't tried and the latter I find too sweet for my tastebuds. It's why this coffee shop doesn't get 5 stars from me. They do have some gluten-free packaged snacks and I think maybe even fresh fruit. If you're looking to get a great spot to work and/or a table for more than two people, I would recommend getting here earlier in the morning. I used to go in 8:30/9am and there were only a few people. Around ~10am, the business meetings seemed to start happening, so it gets louder and tables are harder to get. As for coffee, they usually have a couple of roasts on the go. My favourite (Sumatra) is rarer in rotation. You can also buy bags of your favourite coffee to make at home, which I somehow didn't realize until a year ago! In addition to that, they have coffee makers, accessories, hot chocolate mixes, tea and apple cider mix for sale. Since this is part of Dartmouth Crossing, it has a huge parking lot in front, so parking can always be found. If you are going through the drive-thru, it is one of the stranger ones I've seen. You go around the building on the far side from the SC and you're supposed to drive into the channel on the right of the road, then back across the road into the channel on that side to reach the point to order. You *can* just turn left into it if there's no lineup, but it is almost 90 degrees, hence the strange channel on the right. When you are exiting the drive-thru, just be aware and stop because it's quite busy with cars moving from three other angles and pedestrians. It's honestly not as bad as I make it sound though! haha If you're looking for somewhere to get some work done in the Burnside/Dartmouth North area or just have a great drink, this is your spot! Note: Even in the summer this location is cold because of the refrigeration required. Definitely take a light wrap or cardigan if you're planning to stay. read more

I've gotta say, we had a pretty stellar visit to the Second Cup over the weekend after drooling over things we can't afford at Backyard and Veranda. The interior is far nicer than any Second Cup I've been to thanks to the introduction of a new colour scheme in the form of some lively green and cream accents to lighten up the dark woods that most of their other locations stick to. Staff were surprisingly friendly-like, local café levels of friendly. They asked about my day, they offered recommendations of new things to try, they suggested different ways to spice up more classic drinks, and they even offered to bring our drinks over when things were taking a little longer. They even took a minute to ask if we'd rather a to-go cup or a large mug for a medium drink, instead of waiting for a medium mug to come out of the dishwasher. I know it's simple stuff but we really got the sense that they actually cared about giving us a nice break in the day. I really haven't had that level of service and attention at a chain café...well...ever! If they could master doing this for every customer (said after reading through the other reviews), they'll be golden. read more

I had my car in to get new winter boots put on it at the local Costco! I was told it would be an hour, so instead of wandering through the Costco, i decided to take a walk around the park! It was a lovely day, sunny, but cool. So after a few stops into random stores to tickle whatever fancy I had that fleeting moment! After some time, i decided to roll in here and grab a warm beverage! Now for me that warm beverage is a hot chocolate, since i don't drink coffee or tea! The place is cute, I'm not one to ever sit in a coffee shop so, i don't care what the decor is as long as it is neat and tidy. This place was. I was greeted right away, place my order. White Hot Chocolate! Whip Cream? they ask! Hell yeah, I reply. It was good, not the best in the city. (Choco Cafe has that) But good none the less. It could have been a little hotter, but the flavour was nice and the whipped cream was whippy! next time I need a warm bevy, this place will do! read more

After grabbing lupper (lunch/supper) nearby, I decided I would really like a coffee and did not feel like making one at home. So we popped over to second cup. I got an iced caramel latte - nothing special really, pretty par for the course in the sweetened iced latte category. But E bought a frozen hot chocolate and that was delicious! It was thick, rich, and actually cocoa-ey. I would go back for that alone, but the real shining star of the place would have to be the servers. They were the friendliest people. So nice, and offered to answer any questions I had before I made my decision. Big smiles! Customer service can be a rotten job, I know that, so major kudos to these ladies for keeping things so pleasant with a full house. We took out, but had we decided to stay in things looked comfy. It's most definitely a corporate type franchise place, but things looked clean and comfy, albeit a bit cramped. In a nutshell: tiny, cramped shop. Unusually hot and stuffy. Dirtiest seats I've ever seen. Overpriced drinks and treats (but that's par for the cafe course). Staff stays behind the counter so no spills are cleaned before they become stains and tables are not wiped down; you're just supposed to add to the mess left by previous patrons. I hear their hot chocolate is good. Plus the servers were friendly, so there's that. read more

This is the closest coffee shop to my office, so I stop in from time to time for a morning treat. I can't comment on how busy it is, because I'm in there before 8am, when the crossing is still dead. The inside is nice, long and narrow with plenty of seating. The staff are always friendly and fast, no matter what I order. My personal favorite is their cider, so much so that I buy cans of it to keep at the office. I'm not a huge fan of their baked goods, and while they sell bagels, they don't have a toaster so they heat them up on a panini grill, which smushes them. You also have to add the spread yourself. Doing this once caused me to have to pull an outfit change because the butter package they threw in with the bagel melted and spilled when I opened it. Anyway I've learned my lesson and now grab my bagel to go and toast it at the office. Overall a nice spot to grab a drink. read more

Setting: After shopping at Jysk, I need to use the ladies room, so we wander in to Second Cup for a pee and a hot beverage. I Walk up to counter, Barista over to the right a bit. I'm looking at the menu. Barista: "Hey, how are you?" Me: "Great, you?" Barista: "I'm pretty good, just you know... the weather.. blah blah..blah" Setting: I look over AT the barista, and she is on the phone! She is not talking to me! She is on the phone, and it's not a business call. She is on the phone, while I'm standing at the counter waiting to be served!? AND I look like a total noob. Me: NOT impressed Another barista takes my order; a Cappuccino for the bf, and a Chai Latte for me. I go to the "waiting dock", whist the gabby barista makes my drinks. Chai Latte coula used more chai. It didn't have the 'spice' that I enjoy. Cappuccino, sucked. Bad. Tasted like coffee without any fixins, not cool. That damn cap costed me like $3.50, for a small. my spouse purchased a large take out coffee for me from this location. when i got to the bottom of the cup i found a screw with a plastic knob on the end of it. it was a piece from their creamer machine. obviously the person that made my coffee was too busy doing something else (who knows what) and didn't notice their piece of equipment falling in my cup. a major choke hazard, not to mention the crud that had built up in the threads of the screw. very disgusting!!! i first called and complained to the store manager, who apologized and told me this was the second time this has happened at this location. she offered me 10 dollars for my trouble. i emailed head office and explained the incident, another apology and a 10 dollar offer saying they stood behind their store. what about standing behind your customers?? finally out of frustration i made a complaint with the bbb, which by the way they are not a member. I'm not surprised. i told them what they could do with their 10 dollars. never again will i grace the doors of any second cup and will tell everyone i know what kind of product, quality control and customer service they can expect with their over priced coffee. they should change their name from second cup to second rate!! i still have the cup and screw and show it to everyone. read more

I am embarrassed that it took me so long to post this review, but that in no way minimizes the gratitude I have for the staff who were working on October 1, 2014 at Dartmouth Crossing. I was in Dartmouth (from PEI) on training and a number of us went to lunch at a restaurant just a short walk from the coffee shop. As we were leaving I recalled that I had promised to bring a coffee back to one of my co-workers. I ran into the Second Cup as we were going to be potentially a little late getting back, and was able to order right away. In my haste getting out of the car I grabbed my wallet out of my purse, opting not to sling the purse strap over my shoulder. I paid for the coffee, added milk and rushed back out the door. After the training was over, I was meeting my Partner (Max) at Costco. I transferred my belongings to the jeep and reached for my wallet in my purse, only to see it wasn't there. I searched my briefcase and all inside the car but the wallet was not there! Assuming it had fallen out of my purse at training, I immediately started calling cell phones of staff that were still in the room when I left. I knew the room would be locked at some point. I was unable to reach anyone so I began calling other onsite employees that could check the room for me, to no avail. I was starting to panic as, like most women, my life was in that wallet! I also had to return home to PEI within a couple of hours. At that point it struck me that the last time I had seen the wallet was at the coffee shop. Rather than go back to the training site I decided to return to the Second Cup first. I advised the employee behind the counter that I had been in at lunch to purchase a coffee and wondered if I had left my wallet on the condiments table, proceeding to describe it to her. She immediately replied that they had found such a wallet and she retrieved it for me from behind the counter. I was so relieved and grateful and expressed my thanks to her before leaving. It took some time for my nervous system to slow down, but I realized how very lucky I was to have ever gotten the wallet back. I don't know who found it, but the staff kept it secure until I returned for it and for that I am grateful. While I never actually consumed any product from Second Cup that day, I got the best service possible! I hope the owner reads this and also recognizes the integrity and service provided by his/her staff that day. Again, many thanks. read more
