I LOVE this beach! We drive about 45 minutes to get here, but it is worth it. It is usually busy, but we get there either really early or after 3pm (then you don't have to pay to park) and by then the crowds have thinned out a bit. With 2 small kids, it is the perfect beach. the water is shallow at the beginning and doesn't have a steep drop off. The water is pretty warm and the facilities are great! read more

A more family friendly and less college beach. This is where I want to go when I don't want to hear blaring music from the Atlantic beach club or not smell the putrid stank of red tide. Sand is softer and less crowded on the week days. There is adequate parking a little smaller than the fellow first beach. There are surfing lessons on one end and a Del's lemonade truck right by. read more

Second beach is one of the best beaches in RI. Many travel to Newport and attempt to get to First Beach, which is a mistake. Just keep driving and pass Atlantic Beach Club and St. George's and you will find a beach that is clean, has great waves, lots of room and ample parking. Keep in mind, the earlier you get there, the better on weekends. Sometimes the lot fills up and as cars leave, they let cars in. A beach pass is defintely worthwhile. Also, they allow barbecues later in the evening. Last summer I went to a beach gathering and the hosts had a half-barrel grill. It was great. This must be done closer to surfer's rock though. It is a great place to boogie board and just relax. Come here and stay away from the red tide at 1st Beach! read more

Went here on Father's day per my big brother's request - because they had surfing and the nieces are learning to board. It's beautiful, a smallish cove, with dramatic rock structures, nice waves, and warm-ish water. The parking lot is small and costs $20. There are porta-pottys and one truck selling del's lemonade. On season there are lifeguards. read more

Loved this beach. Unfortunately it wasn't entirely exempt from the gross red tide that plagues the area, but it luckily seemed self-contained in certain sections so we were still able to get in the water each time we were there (although the last time, after a large storm, the amount of seaweed that made its way into my bathing suit was a little shocking and a lot disgusting). The waves were pretty good, although one day they were substantially more exciting and the next day there were little to none. We came a little after 3 one day and didn't have to pay for parking but $10 for the day is well worth the price. The view of St. George's and the houses that dot the coastline made this one of the prettiest beaches I've ever been to. read more

One of my favorite beaches! Soft white sand, nice waves for body surfing and boogie boarding. Nice bath house with pretty decent food for a beach. For the most part the water is pretty clear but some times of year you will see some seaweed or red tide but like Narragansett Beach it is usually pretty clear. My kids love this beach. I would give it a five but save that for Longnook Beach in Truro. read more

Sachuest beach was the first beach I came to after moving to Rhode Island, and I must say, despite the name, it's second to none. Note that the parking fee jumps to $20 on the weekend (or at least Saturday) and is $10 on weekdays. Can't speak to the snack bar as I bring my own food. But the sand is clean and the waves are just right for playing around. Watch out for seagulls: they tried to take my sandwich right out of my hands twice in the same day. Enjoy! read more

The most disgusting beach experience! First we went to Scarborough Beach where we paid only $14 for parking; however the waves were too rough. So, based on recommendations, after driving almost 2 hours, we drove 40 more minutes to Sachuest Beach, over a couple of bridges (toll road). Traffic was a zoo, parking was $25 and sparse. They directed us to a lot across the street. With a wagon in tow (and no crosswalks), i couldn't walk too far through the sand. So we plopped our stuff down at the first lifeguard chair, #10. Water temp was ok, waves were a little more calm than the previous beach; however there was sooooo much red seaweed and the water was red. We came out of the water covered in red seaweed bits that took some effort to scrape off. AND, there were creepy, crawly bugs with antennae all over us. So disgusting! (I would have taken a picture of us covered in this stuff, but we were so grossed out that we packed up our stuff so quickly and left.) There were NO facilities near where we were sitting. I heard there was a bath house, but I never saw one, just a few filthy port-a-potties (with no line to wait in, for 100's of people) and a Del's Frozen Lemonade truck. The lifeguard said the red tide is rare, "it only happens 4x per month!" That's too frequent for my taste. We should have saved the $25+tolls and stayed at Scarborough. read more

I would give it five stars in a heartbeat if it wasn't for the concession stand. What a phenomenal beach but trust me, bring your own food and don't use the concession stand. Not only were the staff rude and slow and unfriendly, they were out of most things on their menu. There were zero healthy choices and everything was overpriced. Now about the beach, the best part of the beach are the enormous waves! Probably the biggest waves I've seen in any New England beach. If you are someone who likes to boogie board, this is the beach for you. The sand is very soft with very few shells. Admission price is quite high ($25) but to me it was really worth it. We had a fantastic day. Next time we're bringing our own cooler. read more

My family of 4 visited 7/10/18 Beach was very nice! Sand is powdery and water was pretty warm. Kids had fun boogie boarding in they waves. The only reason I didn't rate it a 5 is the facilities were disgusting. Bathrooms were gross and no indoor shower that I found. Outdoor shower has freezing water. All in all this is a fantastic beach and we will definitely be back! read more

Love this beach. Don't love the parking fee, but you get that almost anywhere you go. Second Beach has bathrooms, showers, concessions, clean sand, a deep beach, nice waves (not too big, not too small) and tons of parking. I've never been shut out of the lot (whereas I have been at 1st Beach). And since you have to drive a few miles out of Newport to get here, there are waaaay less tourists. read more

One of my favorite beaches in the area. I always enjoyed visiting, especially so when tourist season was not at the peak. It is an easy beach as far as parking is concerned during the OFF season when I would pull right in and had my choice of spots (and no charge) down towards the wildlife center. I grew up on this beach. Best on the island unless you want a stuffy private beach around the drive in Newport, which is nice for privacy but not as family-friendly. This beach gets very busy on weekends so go early and stake out your space. Also watch out for the gulls; they will open your canvas bags and pull your lunch right out and eat it...bring an umbrella. read more

Made our first visit to this beach yesterday after looking for a new beach to check out (thank you Google). After taking the "scenic" route through downtown newport to get there, we were delightfully surprised at the quality of the beach. The sand was nice and soft, not rocky whatsoever, and the water was warm and fun. The only slight issue the kids had, which didn't bother me much was the red algae; believe me I would choose swimming in that stuff over the seaweed I have swam in before at other beaches. read more

$25 parking fee is outrageous! Relatives in town for the weekend wanted to go to the beach. We thought Third Beach might be less crowded. Dad wanted to pay for parking... Brought what be thought was enough... He was so embarrassed and angry he wanted to leave. Talked him into staying. No sand...only so many broken shells he couldn't walk to the water because his feet were getting cut. I was the only one who went in the water... But it was just too cold on the river... Second Beach has now taken over as my FAV beach in Newport. This seems to be the only public beach in Newport that they manicure.

We are giving up going to the Cape ( Truro) because we love this beach so much. No trafific, great soft sand, waves to body surf and clean and friendly beach. read more

I was nervous about driving over an hour to this beach with my 2-year-old, but it was worth it. We got there on a Sunday at 10am when it was relatively empty. We had tons of options for parking (yes, $20) and setting up our site. In response to previous reviews, there was not one drop of seaweed to speak of. The sand is like powdered sugar and my daughter spent over three hours just rolling around in it. The water was clear and gorgeous and the waves were moderate. The views are nice as well. We used the bathroom and the changing area, both of which were difficult to navigate with a toddler. Ultimately I wound up changing her outside on the sidewalk because there was more elbow room. They have outdoor showers as well which are necessary for clean up. The snack bar is nothing fancy but they have sandwiches, fries, soft serve, and more (for a typical inflated price). By the time we left at 2pm the beach was completely packed as was the parking lot. The only annoying thing was that a few people near us dug really big craters in the sand. I'm not sure what this was for exactly, but I had to keep checking to make sure my daughter didn't fall into one of them. read more
