Had a great day out with the kids. Pretty view of the sailboats, a nice park, a pretty clean "beach." Looks like they take care in cleaning up trash here. Bathrooms easily accessible.

Our first mandatory stop on 10 Mile Drive is this gem of a park that offers photo opportunities galore of the Newport Harbor with the Pell bridge in the background. Also worthy of note is the gazebo and a large memorial to General Rochambeau. We had no problem finding free parking during 2 mid- week visits.

I remember coming here as a little girl to watch my brother play in the All Star Baseball League. Beautiful, quiet, peaceful location in Newport RI. Great place to enjoy the views, put your toes in the water or enjoy a picnic! We stopped here to grab lobster rolls from the La Costa Food Truck (if you see them here, definitely give them a try... Very good) We sat on the wall enjoying both the lobster roll and the lovely views.

Cute beach area at the end of ocean drive!!! I love to come here to collect rocks and shells and to avoid most of the tourists that tend to be more up by Breton point. Some rocky sand to sit or lay in during the summer months and a few rocks to climb around on to see the sea life. I love walking this little beach area in the summer because there are tons of beach roses that line the beach and smell really nice!

Great views cool music and a green general King Park, sometimes called Newport Harbor Park, is a narrow strip of land that has fantastic views of Newport Harbor, Fort Adams and even the Newport Bridge. During the summer the waters of Newport are filled with huge and impressive sailboats and yachts and the park is usually packed with people just enjoying the views. Besides the great natural attractions the park also has some benches, picnic tables, a baseball field, and a bandstand and rotunda. Also a little beach, free boat ramp and wonder of wonders, clean public bathrooms, Well at least they're clean most of the time. On the south side is a cool statue of General Rochambeau, the French nobleman who helped the Americans in the Revolutionary War. Near the greenish looking general is the bandstand where free concerts are held during the summer months. Every Sunday various bluegrass, country, blues and jazz performers fill the air with their melodious creations. With the cool breezes off the water and boats in the background, it's hard to imagine a nicer place for an outdoor concert. King Park is a small place that is easy to miss because it blends in with the harbor so well. Unfortunately the one thing that King Park doesn't have is much parking. A parking lot for locals with stickers but everyone else has to take their chances finding something on the street. On Sundays during the concerts you can forget about finding anything close to the park but there is always some place if you don't mind a bit of a hike. Newport is such a great place to walk that just getting to the park will be half the fun.

Super little park with a lovely view of the harbor and the bridge. Ball fields, benches, picnic tables and even a statue of a French nobleman (who helped George Washington defeat the British). Parking (if you can find it) is free and unless there's a ballgame going on, there is usually plenty.

    Is there swimming?

Sure is. Sometimes swimming is not advised due to weather and bacteria, but there's a swimming area and it's a listed amenity of the park.

I've been here many times over the last two years but have never walked it after any snowfall. So knowing it recently snowed and that it hasn't all melted away, I immediately drove down on my first day off. I'm sure it would have been even more beautiful than it was today if I had been here just after a fresh snowfall. But it was a good glimpse of just how beautiful it could be. There were still many patches of white and the landscape was transformed by it. The cold breeze enveloped you as you walked the 3.5 miles was refreshing like chugging a cold beer on a hot summer day. It's an easy stroll even on the "rougher" terrain. Any hiking shoes would easily help you traverse the whole 3.5 miles. You get to see many of the historical and private mansions along the coast. And if you're curious to see more of them, continue onto the main road at the end of the cliff walk and see them from there (lots of information posted along the way too!) Parking during off-season is plentiful and free. Good luck during the rest of the year finding parking when crowds really pack this place...

There are also great views of the Atlantic. On the downside, it can be very crowded and it's fairly narrow in spots. (I was going to put in an offer on the Breakers mansion, which has 70 rooms, 48 bedrooms and 27 fireplaces but thought it might be too drafty!!!). Newport is a great place to visit, and if you arrive on a decent day, it's worthwhile to take a walk on the Cliff Walk!

Even though the technology has greatly improved over the years and centuries, the idea is hardly new. Wind power has been used in New England for a long time and was frequently used to power the old grist mills. A few of the old windmills managed to survive and Paradise Park has one of the finest examples still around. The mill was built back in 1810 and was used to grind corn and is a great example of a smock mill that has numerous sloped sides. It originally had four vanes but was increased to eight over the years to improve efficiency. The mill stood a bit further north in Portsmouth but was restored and moved to Paradise Park in 1990. The mill is open one day a year in Sept but can be seen all year long in the park. The rest of Paradise Park is pleasant, with a few short hiking trails and benches and places to sit and relax. Some concerts are held here in the summer and the historical society is right next door. There are a lot of parks in Rhode Island and quite a few windmills but this is the only windmill in a park that I know of. A lovely place to see a part of the past that is quickly becoming the vision of the future.
