SUCH a cool place to visit in RI. We literally made a whole day out of being here it was so fun. I wanna go back! Look at these stunning water views. Crazytown! There's plenty of opportunities to climb/hike up trails to get even sicker views. There's also huge rocks you can take a seat and relax on, and everyone we passed was so friendly -- but we only passed a few people every once in a while. The best part? It's covered in the coooolest graffiti on the inside and outside of cement tunnels and abandoned structures that you can walk through. I've never seen anything like it! Good size state park (over 60 acres) with lots of areas for hiking, picnics, walking and also scuba diving...yes, there is an area of the park especially reserved for people who want to get on their scuba gear and get into the water with their scuba. Fort Wetherill State Park, has many areas with 100 foot-high granite cliffs for visitors to enjoy.....the park is across the water from Fort Adams State Park and it is a former coastal defense battery and training camp. So there are some historical significance for those into learning about Rhode Island past. read more

There is so much to do @ Fort Wetherill that even after decades of visits, I still find something new every time I go. Beautiful graffiti, so many trails to choose from, gorgeous views of Narragansett Bay & Newport. It's a great place for a picnic, date, dog walk, hike, exploration, ultimate frisbee game... I love this place. Took my 13yo son here yesterday for the first time. He was not thrilled that I have known about this place and never taken him - but it's not really somewhere to take a toddler? and I just hadn't thought of taking him there before... The place is trashed - like LOTS of trash - which is super disappointing that people can be such garbage human beings. Next time I'll bring gloves and some trash bags. But overall the views are stunning. The climbing up and down rocks is fun. You can get right down to the water. The fort itself is a weird little gem. There are abandoned rooms to wander, all covered in graffiti. There was the smell of fresh paint in a few rooms - so just know that if you go back again it's going to be a different experience. Some graffiti is SO well done - very creative. Then there is some nonsense. It's a mixed bag. There was one spot that thoroughly amused the kid - when I read a wall that neatly said "Nothing lasts forever... except herpees (sic)" I took so many pictures. My son asked if we could take my cousins there next time they come to RI. I am happy that he also loves this trash, broken glass, graffiti covered mess. WOW. Honestly, I was not prepared for how amazing this place really is. It's cool, it's scary, its beautiful and messy. I am honestly not exactly sure how to describe this place. There is a pond like lagoon area, an ocean front vista with spectacular views, a gorgeous rocky beach area that leads you directly into the crystal clear, aqua waters below and just soooo much natural beauty to take it. I felt like a kid, running from one area to the next, then losing track of time and pushing myself to move on because I knew there was so much more to see. Ok, so here's where this gets amazing and crazy. Well, on the other side of the rocky area (Yes, the same one I just described to you with the amazing ocean views and aqua blue waters) is this abandoned fort that is COMPLETELY covered in graffiti but in such a creepy, artistic, organized yet completely disorganized chaos kind of way. On one side of you is a tall, multi level abandoned cement shell of a building, with room after room and hall after hall of dark rooms covered in graffiti that leads you to nothing. This is creepy, like movie worthy creepy, but so amazing and interesting all at the same time. Across the way, on the other side of you is what looks like it could have been an abandoned prison. Imagine like a row of 20 cement rooms, the size of a small home office. Cement walls, floors, ceilings etc. Literally, just a row of empty, dark, cement rooms with a hole for a window and and hole for a doorway in each. The walls, floors and ceilings are all covered in graffiti as well. The room with the crazy clown is probably the scariest thing I have seen. You will definitely want to have someone with you, if you do go in to explore. It's a pretty incredible place, an amazing experience and I am soooo excited to go back in the summer and walk right into that water. read more

This place was EMPTY which made for an extra weird vibe. I was alone with my dog so didn't venture as far as I may have if I saw people or was with my spouse. Lots of broken glass and burnt firework debris. Didn't feel safe so not sure if I would come back....maybe with a shank but even then I'd question my decision. This IS the summer spot!! There's a great swimming spot. There's a great fishing spot. The fort is fun to explore and lots of scenic spots. Had a picnic here with friends in a cool spot in the shade. This is a spot to come to to recharge and have a great scenic swim. It looked like we were the only people wearing masks. Very scenic spot, got to visit & see the ever changing graffiti. read more

This is my first time to this state park and I'm in love. The ocean view is beautiful. There's so many area around the park you can enjoyed. There's also picnic areas and places for hike. There's also a beautiful hidden swim area which is part of the ocean. The state park itself is worth The drive. A must visit on everyone bucket list. read more

The most beautiful park in the state! Breathtaking views of the ocean from the cliffs. You could spend all day here hiking through the trails and discovering. There are plenty of picnic tables and shady trees. Also a big meadow/clearing. The fort itself is really coo too and you can explore the old bunkers and gun turrents. I normally hate grafitti, but some of the stuff here is pretty artistic. Great place for families, couples, or anyone adventurous and not scared of bugs. read more

i went to fort weatheral this morning. explored some of the empty rooms. they were dark and spooky. i took some interesting pictures. i didnt spend to much time in there. i didnt know what i would find. unless your feeling very brave, i wouldnt explore these rooms. i was the only one there. read more

A beautiful Jamestown state park located high on the cliffs over looking the East Passage of Narragansett Bay. A great place to go anytime of the year. In the winter it is usually empty so it's a nice place for some solitude but in the summer it 's crowded with people on picnics, hiking, scuba diving, kayaking or just enjoying the views. The park was once an old coastal fort and the thick walls of the fort and the gun emplacements can still be seen. Up on top of the walls great views of Castle Hill Lighthouse and Fort Adams over in Newport are visible. The park is a very popular place to watch the tall ships enter Newport. It's also a very popular place for diving and many people from Rhode Island learn to dive here. The boat ramp is pretty steep but it's fine for small boats and many kayaks launch from the site. An absolutely great place that deserves more than five stars. read more

This was one of my favorite places to go on a picnic when I was a kid and it's still one of my favorite spots in the state to this day. There are picnic tables and shady trees in the fields next to the road and parking lot, but the real fun is a little further into the park. The old fort for which the park is named is covered in graffiti and surrounded in many places by fence, but it is a really cool place to explore. There are dark and damp tunnels under the fort, high walls with views of the bay on top of the fort, and massive holes in the ground where you can use your imagination to picture the giant cannons that used to reside there. Go a little further past the fort down one of the many paths leading towards the water and the views get even better. There is a fence between the fort and the water that makes me believe that you're not technically allowed to go that way. But nearly every path leads you to a hole in the fence and they're the same holes that were there when I was a kid. If the effort to keep you out were a serious one, the holes would be mended by now. The climb over the fort, scrabble down the hill, and crawl through the fence will be rewarded. You come out to what is, in my opinion, the most beautiful view in Rhode Island. The rocky cliffs overlooking the ocean are a blast to climb on and breathtaking to view. The next time you head to Newport, do yourself a favor and get off the highway before the tollbridge and spend some time in Jamestown. This place is a must see. read more

I really dig wandering around this place and the grounds, and find it to be a pretty interesting place. If you aren't keen to jumping fences, stairs, and steep trails this probably isn't the place for you to spend the day. I'd say it is definitely more for the physically active and adventurous. I find all of the graffiti to be pretty interesting, though there is some I could have gone without. It's kind of disappointing to see penises and curse words sprayed over pieces that actually took time and artistic talent. There are a lot of buildings to wander in, stairs and fences to climb, and some good scenery that gets a little lost in all of the trees and shrubs. If you are up for an adventure, you can scale down some pathways to the shores. I am told there are some cliffs for jumping, but have yet to find those. On my last visit I was able to find a way down to the rocky shores where the rocks are also covered in graffiti. Unfortunately there is a lot of trash both around the buildings and the shores, it's sad to see how disrespectful people are of nature, and it has a way of taking away from the natural beauty of things. From down there, looking up it's really hard to tell that the ruins are even there due to how full the trees and bushes are. I'll be back time and time again for exploring. read more

We toured the Fort itself, if you are going you will need sturdy shoes (no flip flops) and a flashlight. There are some artistic taggers doing work down there. Some are just kids with their first spray can. Like another yelper said...climb up over the fort, and down the hill to see a beautiful view. When I was last there I saw a couple kids sweeping a big section of the fort to make videos of their antics (skateboarding). Some rooms underneath are pretty clean and you can see the original light ten brick that some scavengers have "borrowed". It feels like they should just open this place up and make it into a skate park or some such. Four stars for the exceptional view, too bad it is hard to get to for some people. read more

Rename the park or clean up the fort! Rhode Island residents you can do better. The natural beauty is there... I'd give it way more stars if there wasn't graffiti on every inch of the dilapidated fort. What could be a beautiful State Park has been ruined by humans! If you're adventurous and a big State Park enthusiast you should go. But don't be fooled, it's not great. The views of the water are, but it's like sitting through a terrible dinner to get to a surprisingly good dessert. If I lived in Rhode Island I'd petition the state to clean up the fort. And volunteer to help! Tons of potential there. Anyway, good luck and check out Newport. That place is 5 star worthy! read more

To anyone who thinks that teenagers don't go outside enough... oh man... just take a drive through this park. It was like a high school dumped out on parent visitation day. Mostly there were groups of 3 to 10 teenagers but there were also several sets of parents with one or two teens in tow. The trails are not cut back very well so it seems like winter is definitely the best time to go (unless they cut it back at the beginning of summer maybe). I can't even imagine getting through the trails when everything is growing in the summer if it's not cut back. The pieces of the fort are cool, however, they are covered in spray paint. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the 'paintings' amount to the human equivalent of dogs peeing on buildings to mark territory. Few and far between you can find something that could be considered artistic, but even then, there was nothing too impressive. My suggestion would be to come here mid-week during the day to avoid the swarms of teens squealing, smoking and being generally annoying. Do I sound like I'm irritated?! I'll say this... If I had lived nearby when I was a teen... I would be at this park ALL THE TIME for sure. This is definitely a great place for them, just not for me as an adult wanting to hike peacefully and smell nature instead of spray paint. read more

This place is so historic. Unlike some people say, there is some graffiti but not whole lot. There were large guns, some of them were even loaded. You could shoot at the tourists on the cliffs but I recommend they add sights to make it easier to aim. read more

Great place to explore and offers two different experiences. Starting with the fort, while there is a lot of graffiti it was very enjoyable to look at and walk through. It felt like a very immersive art exhibit where the more you explored and look around the more there was to discover. If that isn't your cup of tea then steer clear of that area and go to the rocky beaches. There's plenty of paths to walk around and they will lead you to some amazing views. The beaches were calm and peaceful and allowed you to sit and relax for hours. I couldn't recommend this park enough to those who like to explore, if you are the type of person who prefers a more structured experience then this place will not suit you. read more

After looking at the pictures, not sure where the pretty cliffs in the park are but we definitely didn't find them. Walked on a part of the trail to where the fort is, and was not impressed. The fort was completely covered in graffiti and you would have to jump a fence to explore the fort. I was with my fam and pup so I had no intention of hopping a fence. I stopped here briefly after a visit to Beaver Tail so it wasn't out of the way, but don't think I would come back or recommend to a friend. read more

This was in direct contrast to the guided tour I had an hour beforehand at Fort Adams, but it was fun in it's own special way. Completely overgrown (no doubt easier to explore in the winter) and offering spectacular cliff-side views of the Atlantic, when you wander down one of the many "desire paths" through the brush. There is another satellite bunker of this Fort a few blocks away on another cliff, but I did not have time to see it. The long row of embedded round structures are a sight to behold. I believe they were the swivel points for anti aircraft-cannons... well protected and hidden from sight. There are many "secret" tunnels to explore at your own leisure. If you look for them, you should follow them to see where they go, but bring a bright flashlight. read more

This is a really cool spot to visit when in Jamestown with larger space than Beavertail and parts of an old fort that can be explored. Definitely bring a flashlight if that's your plan for going into the tunnels . The outside is spacious and there are a lot of trails, though some end abruptly and you will have to head back the way you came. While the ocean views from the cliffs are awesome, the town should do something about the massive graffiti issue here from all the punk kids who vandalize such a great spot and certainly get rid of the graffiti already here. You're Jamestown after all, you have the money to do so. read more

Ah Fort Wetherill, we meet again. I have not been to this park since I got hypothermia during a dive years ago. I know a lot of people like to dive here but I had a bad dive here, murky and grassy, but maybe it was a fluke. The park itself is nice but feels small. The urban ruins aspect of Fort Wetherill is fascinating but the actual fort is unfortunately covered in graffiti (not even good graffiti) and littered with trash. I also feel like the tunnels everyone used to rave about and that I had previously seen a couple years back have since been covered up, which took out a lot of the fun we were looking to have. But, the fort aside, the "park" is stunning as it overlooks the ocean and there is also a very small beach area to soak up the sun. Looking forward to going swimming here! read more

If you ever want to feel as though you live in a Seurat painting of an Elysian field, bring your Bordeaux no further than the hills of Fort Wetherill. As a veritable park, Fort Wetherill offers none of the rambunctious steel and plastic equipment indigenous to your neighborhood sandpit. Instead, it doles a relaxing afternoon on something akin to the Jamestown green circa 1700 (only with a terribly ugly modern plumbing facility that irritatingly, but necessarily, disrupts the impressionist fantasy). Come here, watch your children frolic...maybe give them some ribbons and sunhats, and a goat if you're feeling feisty, and pretend that you live in the days of yesteryear. read more

There are a few paths that lead down the hill to a fence . On the paths you will need to push past branches and bushes . Holes in the fence enable access to the rocks and provide views of the cove and beach. read more
