Beavertail's most popular activity is sightseeing, and can be done from the comfort of a vehicle, in one of the four overlooks or on foot, from the rocky coastline. Beavertail also provides some of the best saltwater fishing in the area, along with offering hiking trails, and a naturalist program that attracts hundreds of people each year. This is a great place in the summer, fall or spring. Many people do enjoy winter hikes as well. The entry and the parking are free. If you have some free time and are in the Jamestown and/or Newport area, this is a nice stop to relax.

There's also huge rocks you can take a seat and relax on, and everyone we passed was so friendly -- but we only passed a few people every once in a while. The best part? It's covered in the coooolest graffiti on the inside and outside of cement tunnels and abandoned structures that you can walk through. I've never seen anything like it! The Jamestown community has really put together an amazing space for children. No dogs are allowed in the park so plan accordingly. We had a puppy with us and stayed on the shady side walk near the community center while the dads kept an eye on the kids. There are a few picnic tables in the shade here. Lots of swings. Monkey bars. Zip line. And much more! The kids had a ball. Bonus points, an ice cream shop is across the street. Two thumbs up.

I'd say the main downside is that they don't have bathrooms and instead just have port-a-potty's. You can probably go into the library if the library is open, but when we were there the library was closed. The park has a great setup for younger kids on side and older kids on the other. I also love that there is a little bakery/cafe across the street that you can grab an iced coffee at and a snack before or after the kids play. Street parking was tight, but we were able to park at the library. Overall a lovely gem of a playground.

Walk from the parking lot down the large path until you see water. Then at the beach, take a right and climb over some big rocks and you'll find more beach to walk on as you head towards the Jamestown Bridge. Very easy walk/hike. We came in the winter so there was a lot of snow on the ground, but it was still so beautiful and serene. I imagine it's just gorgeous in the summer. A fort that has been…read morehere forever Fort Getty is located on the east side of Jamestown and has a long history as a real fort. In world war I and II in was used as an observational station to watch for German subs and it served as a reeducational center for German prisoners of war. Remains of the old bunkers and odd bumps and depressions in the ground can still be seen. Now it is used primarily as a camp ground and it has facilities for over 100 campers with showers and a boat ramp. There is also a pavilion with a large amount of picnics tables and a small beach for swimming. The actually area is not large and the primary attraction is the location. Since it is up on a hill the views are spectacular . Dutch Island can be seen to the east and views of the Jamestown bridge to the north. It's an easy bike ride to Beavertail State Park or to the center of town or a quick car trip over to Newport. It's a great place to launch a kayak with many great places to explore within a relatively short paddle. The only negative is that it fills up quickly so reservations must be made well in advance. A great location for a camping trip.
