After our floors were damaged by a flood, we chose Seattle Style Flooring/Andy's 5-star Flooring to replace our floors with LVP. Nearly 8 weeks after the initial faulty install, the company has evaded our persistent requests to correct the installation. Given the frustrating and exhausting experience of working with this company, I would never recommend them and would advise anyone interested in hiring them to steer clear. For those interested, here is a detailed account of our experience: - We scheduled the initial installation, and to our surprise, the installation crew called a week early to say they were on their way. We told them it was the wrong week and they could not come that day. - No one called us to apologize or reschedule. Instead, we made several calls and sent an email to our salesperson, Scott Whitmarsh, and the job was rescheduled to begin on the date originally agreed. - As for the installation, I will preface this by saying that Scott proudly sold us on the fact that this company hires craftsman to install floors, as compared to the inexperienced flooring installers that may be found at somewhere like Lowes. - The crew that came to install our floors were clearly inexperienced and unqualified to complete the job. While they managed to adequately lay the floors in the living and kitchen area, they neglected to level the subfloor at any point, which became an issue with the bedroom installation. The bedroom LVP floors have high and low spots that visibly bow when stepped on. The company has repeatedly evaded our requests to properly level the floors and redo the installation. We have persisted for nearly 8 weeks at this point to have the bedroom installation completed properly. - The crew also installed baseboards. Some of our original baseboards were damaged during the flooring removal and dry out process from the flood, so we needed the same type of baseboard installed where the old ones were missing. The baseboards were the wrong size, but the crew installed them nonetheless, never voicing to us while there that the boards were the wrong size. In fact, it turned out that they installed baseboards of two different sizes, which were both different from our original baseboards. - The baseboard joints showed very poor craftsmanship, with large gaps and joints that were poorly cut. See photos. - The quarter round installed at our front and balcony threshold were noticeably damaged during install. - Several of the baseboards were damaged during installation. - The baseboards in the bedroom closet were installed misaligned so that the closet doors no longer close properly. - The crew used silicone to caulk the baseboard joints, which is not a paintable surface. We discovered this when our painter came to paint our walls and pointed out where the paint would not adhere to the areas near the baseboards that were covered with silicone caulk. - After much complaining, it was agreed that a more experienced crew would come back to properly install the baseboards. - When the day came, the same crew arrived. - We called to say that was not acceptable, and later that day a different person came to perform and supervise the baseboard re-installation. - This more experienced person also trimmed some of the LVP boards in the bedroom to see if that would correct the bowing. It did not. - We continue to work with the company to correct the poor bedroom install. However, given all we've been through, we would advise anyone looking for new floors to shop elsewhere. read more

As a landscape designer who facilitates her design installations, I am a demanding designer and contractor. I connected with Scott Whitmarsh of Seattle Style Flooring on a project with clients creating an custom outdoor BBQ and fire table with single piece counter tops. This project is in process, but I Scott has been a knowledgible and responsive resource for a complicated project. Meanwhile, my husband and I needed to replace the very tired carpet in our home. As our knowledge of carpeting was nil, Scott started us with an overview and primer, asking many questions about our home, lifestyle and priorities (small spaces, high traffic, 70 pound dog, quality, aesthetics, feel) so he could make the best product recommendations. Within a couple of hours we walked out with three sample boards, mulled them over in our home and made exactly the right selection. Three weeks later we have beautiful new carpet installed by Raoul and Jon, their in-house installation team who were a delight to work with. I am very particular about installation, both process and care for details. These are craftsman who are rightly proud of their work. He ended up staying an hour and a half for the consultation and he took the time to educate us on all things flooring and the process. He was very genuine and it never came across as he was pushing any particular product or even the sale. Which we really appreciated. After the consultation, he sent over a very detailed estimate within 48 hours of the consultation. Phil B. Called us to go over everything over the phone and really worked with our budget. He asked us ahead of time if we had a preference on an end of day time, and since it's just my husband and I we didn't care. Ordered a luxury vinyl product for 2 bedrooms in our home to replace carpeting. We have dogs and I was looking for something durable, that would stand up to dog nails running across it. Scott did a good job explaining options to me. I was happy with the product I chose and we scheduled installation. The installers were the really big downside here. We paid to have them move our furniture, we moved most of the items ourselves and only left the bed and dresser in 1 room, the other room we didn't leave anything for them to move. They left the furniture in the room during the install, didn't cover it, used it as a tool stand, and left our furniture intact but extremely dirty. The took doors off of the hinges, plopped them down in the hallway on our bamboo floors with no floor protection & propped them against the walls without padding. The finished product is not professional. The baseboards were not put back on correctly, the caulking is peeling from the wall within 2 days of install, and the floor has a large, noticeable crack. It looks like a couple of high schoolers installed as a weekend project. I brought these items to the attention of Scott (I walked over to the store and showed him the pictures), and he said "maybe they had one of the junior helpers working with them that day". We discussed the sunken area/crack, and he said that the floor is designed with 1/4" of "give" to it, and it's per design. (Check the picture, I think not). I asked if they were going to fix it and he did not seem interested in making it right. I paid up (probably shouldn't have), but I will not use this company again. Very poor installation. read more

You can learn a lot about carpeting when you get it installed for the first time - especially about what constitutes quality in terms of both service and product. I'd say it goes even further than that, depending on your experience: you can even learn something about yourself in the process. Here's how it went down for me, so to speak. My fiancée and I paid a visit to the store in Greenwood/Ballard, met Phil, and with his help picked out some carpet samples for a stairway recarpeting project. So far so good: he was friendly and informative, and we felt confident that we'd get the results we expected in a reasonable amount of time and at an acceptable cost. After looking at our options in the home setting, we settled on a berberesque, patterned nylon carpet that was sure to complement the bamboo flooring elsewhere and modernize the stairs as part of a larger remodel project. In about two weeks, the appointed installation day arrived. A three-person team of installers filed into my three-level townhome and proceeded to rip up the old carpet and pad, lay down new padding, and pound, stretch, and staple the new carpeting onto four short flights of stairs. The din during those six or so hours was at times more than the cat (or I) could bear. Such is progress, writ small. The team finished up, cleaning up appropriately, and everything looked good. On first glance. Problem was in the second, which unfortunately happened only after the installers were already well gone. Of course. The problem? At least two of the runs had a noticeable twist in the lateral pattern, which was most noticeable where the carpet met the hardwood floor. Once seen, it could not be unseen. That meant that every time I went up the steps or just looked at them, I'd see a skewed - not straight as expected - pattern. I then started arguing with myself: was it just my perfectionism in play? Would I get used to it and not notice it in time? Could I live with it? Or was it important enough that I just had to call Phil and complain about the crappy installation and insist that the installers come back and fix the botched job? An even longer story shortened somewhat, let me cut to the (carpet) chase. Turns out the problem was NOT in the installation as I thought, but rather in the manufacture of the carpet itself: the process of milling the nylon carpet resulted in a "bowing" of the roll, as the chief installer described it when he later came back to assess the problem. Oh hell. How was I going to get this fixed? I called Phil and explained the problem and he was quite up front with me that he didn't have any extra of this product in stock, which meant that the only recourse was either to order more and have it redone (at my cost) or submit the problem to the manufacturer and see if they'd make me whole for the sake of my customer satisfaction. He said it may work out, or it may not - it could take several weeks for claims to see resolution. I needed to send some photos and ... well. Oh double hell. But he'd try. He'd contact the manufacturer's rep and see what he could do. In a few weeks I got a call from Phil - just at the point when I wondered if I'd ever hear from him again - and he said the company rep had agreed that the skewing was their fault and that they'd provide what was needed to cover it - both my stairs and the cost of installation. Just now, of this writing, a few weeks later, I'm appreciating the excellent work of the replacement carpet installer, who not only ripped out and replaced the problematic runs of the previous installation with the new - and well quality-controlled - carpet, but who also went the extra mile and actually did his best to compensate for the irregularities in the construction of the steps of the stairs themselves. He did this by fitting and cutting each individual riser and tread, rather than doing a full run using one piece of carpet. The result: impeccable. I expect that it must be clear by now, O Faceless and Random Social Media Reader, that Phil and team from Seattle Style Flooring did what businesses too few and far between do these days: they gave a shit about their customer and took seriously his concerns and expectations. I would with all my heart recommend that you work with these people to do your flooring job - and that you hold them to account if things are not to your liking. I feel confident - and to be honest, this really is just one man's experienced opinion - that they will not disappoint. By way of a coda to this carpeting saga, you may be wondering (or not - that's fair) what I learned about myself in all this? Just this: that I need first of all to trust myself when I feel that some product or service is not right. And further, that I need to trust that, if I treat people like Phil with respect, they will do the same in return - and if I set aside my doubts and take the trouble to be honest with them, they will more likely than not deliver the kind of outcomes I hope for. read more

Went in, spent a lot of time looking at flooring, and got a quote based on rough measurements. Was told they would call to schedule an exact measurement, and they never did. After several weeks, we took it upon ourselves to reach back out to them. They apologized, but had lost all of our information. So we went back out to the store to pick out the flooring again, and were then told that they wouldn't honor the previous quote, and the new price was almost double. At the time my husband and I stepped into the shop, we were dealing with a window leak and funny smell in the bedrooms of the house we had just bought. Scott went above and beyond in answering questions that weren't strictly about floor installation (like whether the funny smell could be coming from moisture in the slab). After investing almost two months working with Scott Whitmarsh for a major home remodeling project (to replace all carpet/hardwood flooring in our home), we elected to go with Greenhome Solutions for two reasons: (1) a savings of $4,500.00k for the exact same products/services/warranties; (2) the rudeness of Mr. Whitmarsh, who, appearing to take the request to negotiate as a personal insult, retorted "As a successful experienced lawyer I can't imagine YOU would offer the lowest price in your field, would you?"; (3) the unprofessionalism of Mr. Whitmarsh, who failed to respond to our final inquiry asking him if he was amenable to a discount given the scope/expense of our project; (4) the unexplained (& unmentioned) .78 per foot price increase between the initial bid (7.97 per sq. ft.) and the same bid a few weeks later for the same product (8.75 per sq. ft.) --resulting in what would have been an overcharge of app. $2,500.00. Bottom line: home remodeling is. expensive. Ignore the sales pitches and hire a professional who treats you with courtesy and respect. We had an all-around excellent experience with Seattle Style Flooring when replacing old carpeting on the entire lower level (including the stairs) of my elderly mother's home in Ballard. Scott is quite knowledgeable about his products and took the time to educate us about the different choices in carpet materials with their various pros & cons. Over the course of several weeks, he was helpful and patient as we worked through the process of figuring out how to balance our priorities of durability, aesthetics, and price point. He readily accommodated our scheduling preference when coming out to the house to take measurements, and once we had made or decisions, the process progressed quickly and smoothly. Communication was good via phone and email, and Scott called the day prior to the scheduled install to confirm and verify approximate start time. Our install team, Raul and Johnny were terrific. Raul called to give a heads up 15 minutes before arriving, which was appreciated. They got right to work, were friendly, courteous and very professional. There were several heavy pieces of furniture that had to be shifted around in order to lay the carpet, which they managed handily, and they made sure to move them back into place once the carpet was in. They actually got the job done more quickly than we had expected, and they cleaned up nicely when finished. The new carpet looks great, and my mother is quite happy with it. I also want to mention that we did some comparison shopping and got estimates from a couple of other companies, but in terms of the knowledge/helpfulness of sales person, having experienced and reliable installers, good communication, ease of scheduling, and competitive pricing Seattle Style Flooring was the best. From walking into the store to see materials to final replacement took about 10 days - I get the impression that this would have been a longer schedule for a larger project, but a single room was able to fit between other jobs. From getting quick feedback on my initial request (carpet tracks in everything from the outside - what's a better floor idea?) to a very clean and professional install - Scott made this a very easy process. I called these people as recommended by Andy's 5 Star Flooring in Bothell. I was told to ask for Scott. Seattle Style Flooring did not answer the phone, so I left a message for Scott.. I waited 2 weeks, and nobody returned my call. I called 5 Star back and told the nice guy on the phone about this. He said to call SSF right away because Andy, the owner was in the store and I'd be able to catch him. I called. No one answered. I left a message for Andy, the owner. It's now been another week with no returned call. I find this disgraceful, not to mention disrespectful. I understand they may be busy, but to ignore my calls, not once, but twice in a 3 week period? Utterly unacceptable. For this reason alone, I would never recommend them. I called another flooring place, a real person answered the phone (not an answering machine) and they have been wonderfully responsive, so I am paying them for the new flooring. SSF may be good at what they do, but I consider them rude and unprofessional. read more

My wife and I began shopping for flooring less than a month ago. My job was to get the estimates scheduled and deal with the sales process. I called three different local companies and set up times for them to come and give me an estimate. Out of those three only two showed up.. I asked both companies to email me the estimate the next day and I would go over the prices with my wife and we will be in contact very soon. I only received and email the next day from Scott at Seattle style flooring. It makes sense to mention that I sold cars for about nine years and I'm familiar with the sales process. I would like to say that I know when I'm getting the song and dance and also when someone is being straight with me. Scott's estimate was close to our budget and after mentioning that, he actually made some adjustments in the price they got down to a number that we can both agree on. A week later my wife and I went into the showroom and he very casually showed us all of our options. There was no sense of pressure, he was very forthcoming with all of the information, and invited us to take carpet and wood floor samples home to see how they matched our paint. I finally did get an email back from Vogels' carpeting and it was $2000 more than Scott first estimate. Needless to say we went with Seattle style flooring. A short two weeks later the craftsman were in our home installing the new vinyl in the upstairs and the carpeting on the stairs themselves. The process took longer than expected but that really wasn't a problem. The night in between the two day installation I noticed a few issues that concerned me. I emailed Scott that night and surprisingly he emailed me back that night. Going above and beyond, he even showed up to our house the next day and found a way to fix the situation without charging us or even considering asking us to pay more.
