I recently attended a First Aid & CPR recertification training through my workplace, and I can confidently say that Sophia made what could have been a very long, heavy, and potentially monotonous morning into a genuinely engaging and memorable experience. Sophia has the most incredible, larger-than-life personality. She is charismatic, quick-witted, hilarious, and clearly passionate about what she does. Somehow, she managed to strike the perfect balance between the seriousness of the subject matter (which, let's face it, can be pretty doom and gloom!) and keeping an entire room entertained, attentive, and actively learning. Her humor never detracted from the importance of the material. If anything, it made the information more approachable, memorable, and easier to absorb. That is a rare gift, especially when you're teaching potentially life-saving skills. Five hours is a long time to hold anyone's attention, and Sophia made it look effortless. I walked away feeling informed, confident, and genuinely grateful to have had her as our instructor. If you have the opportunity to take a class with Sophia, consider yourself lucky. I just signed up for the summer workshop and attended the first meeting. Ev does a good job of directing folks on what to play, how to play it and getting them to grow musically. There were lots of horns the day I went: tenor saxes, trombone and trumpet. A couple of piano and guitar players, bass players and some wonderful singers and percussionists. We played some blues and some jazz standards and it all came out sounding better than you would expect for a bunch of folks who hadn't played together. I would highly recommend this workshop to anyone interested in Jazz and performing live music. The studio location is easy to find and well situated in a residential neighborhood with plenty of parking.

Before I became middle school age they provided Summer Music School classes for elementary students. These shorter half days both gave me a head-start and provided cherished memories of letting kids play out on the field between lessons. It gave some structure to Summers while still having time to vacation. As for the formal school year a few of my favorite assignments from class included reflecting on unsung heroes, researching family history as a collaboration project with the rest of my extended family, making person shaped cutout posters that explained the parts of ourselves that we found important and going on science field-trips. I watched a video from the current librarian at the school and one book she recommended was on learning graphic design skills. This field is what I now do as my chosen line of work so I would have loved to have done some training on that early in middle school. I've found that having a multitude of related skills will allow you to go further over just being very focused on one or two areas. Collaborating with others can be great but for some jobs I've found I had to connect several skills together on my own to get a job done the way it needed to be. I liked the level of writing I was at when I went to Eckstein but it would have been awesome to couple it together with some basic design and drawing skills. In my own career path I would have used some basic design skills more than high math. I'm not trying to say that high math is not important, only that it is specific to a subset of fields while basic math is used by everyone. In high school I took a class called "Applied Math" and now I use what I learn in that class all the time. I can give an example of that when it came to a financial issue that the PTSA was dealing with at the end of the school year. They had sent out a request to the general community on what they should do about the building of new pickle-ball courts whose price started to inflate to $200,000 and they also struggled to find someone that could commit to the project long enough to complete. I noticed that there were lacrosse teams that played on the weekend so I researched what it would cost to buy a set for a whole team and calculated that this would come out to $15,000 total. I told them about my findings and they chose to go through with the sport for the time being. This overall education is what is great about schools like Eckstein. Their programs keep improving over time. I just went to some of their current concerts and noticed that the music program played very advanced pieces and that was similar to when I went there. One of the differences now is that they put on a whole musical that goes far beyond anything we had at the time! That to me is a goal of a great school. They always push forward and look for ways to surpass the previous achievements that had been performed at this grade level.

The receptionist isn't always on time to work and it's EXTREMELY hard to contact her to get appointments changed, class reschedules (due to snow), and get any online certifications (CPR, AED, HIV). I still haven't received my certs and it's a mess. Please be aware of this. So overall, good class with nice professors, slightly tedious and repetitive, and contacting them..... Good luck.

I'm a fan. I've been…read moretaking classes at Cascade for as long as I can remember. Usually it's ACLS and PALS, but most recently, I took TNCC. General tips for those of you heading this way: They have a coffee machine, but nothing fancy. Powdered creamer and sugar, but it gets the job done. Please be aware that the Tully's that was formerly sharing the same parking lot has now closed. The nearest espresso is at Byen Bakery a few blocks down. Byen is also your best bet for lunch. There's a Thai place that's in the same plaza as Cascade, and while it's passable, it's not out of this world. There's is also a chain pizza place within walking distance (Alfy's, perhaps?) and they do pizza by the slice and have salads. I did not see a microwave at the facility, so if packing a lunch, keep that in mind. Parking in the lot is generally sufficient if you arrive early or on time. As far as instructors go, I have had nothing but great experiences with every single one. You will get medics and RNs primarily, and they are into supporting the students and not the high pressure stuff of yesterday. The environment is casual and they make sure to give sufficient breaks. If you can take TNCC with Linell and Pam, DO IT. They are super fun and great teachers. It was by far the best TNCC class I've had. They are accommodating and calm, and while they make it clear that you must study to pass, they also make sure to hit the high points and make sure everyone can follow along. Highly recommend. The one last thing I'd like to mention is to dress in layers. Some rooms are cold, some are hot, and it's best to wear something light and then have a sweater or jacket on standby. They have filtered water, but you'll want to bring your own bottle. All in all, I think you'll have a great experience with Cascade.
