And it's surprisingly affordable -- there were some incredible prints in (so glad to see the artists' names were clearly labeled!) for $15-$20. There's so much local love here and so much awesome AAPI creative energy. I know I'll be back. I love this store…read more I visited this wonderful store a few months ago. The female employee, who was seated by the front door, was sweet and incredibly welcoming. It's a tiny shop but it's jam packed full of all sorts of interesting novelty and artisanal products. Some of the things I saw were beautiful hand made pottery, jewelry, key chains, stickers, paper products such as postcards, and zines. There were a few handbags and clothing on a rack outside the shop as well. I believe the inventory changes every few months. I can't wait to go back to see what new products they'll have available.

Not only did she help me determine what model cartridge I needed and ordered one, she personally gave me an older cartridge to use in its stead until the new one arrived--truly above and very beyond. In addition to exemplary and personal attention, they have some interesting, diverse, quality products. Most of their products--particularly for the home--are high quality and very eco-friendly. In addition to housewares and such, they have great gift items for adults as well as for kids, cool, unique greeting cards, and some unique surprises, such as a surprisingly good candy/truffle assortment and a random box of vinyl. This store is one of a kind here in New York. It's mecca for artists who care about their…read morematerials. Roger is a super knowledgeable owner and an artist himself - perfect to run this gem of a store! Like other painters, I had an interest in working with the same materials artists whose works now hang in museums used. This is the place to get them. The store offers carefully selected materials. For example, I wanted to make the same type of oil paint as an artist of the 17th century. They were able to sell me the historically appropriate raw pigment, the oil, the glass muller to mix it with, and even the tube to store it in! I believe they will soon sell canvas as well which I'm excited about as I know this will also be good quality (a break from the junk at the big commercial art store chains). They also carry many modern equivalents to historic materials. The prices are fair and the ability to see, handle, and ask questions about the materials is worth so much!

After I politely declined a tray in the crystal section, she sucked her teeth and muttered something under her breath. Later at checkout, Kaoru -- a woman with a bob haircut) -- ignored my question until I repeated it, tossed my receipt at me, didn't bag my items, and walked away when I asked her name, telling me "it wasn't necessary". I also couldn't help but notice I was the only one who looked like me in the store at the time, which made the interaction feel targeted. This was especially disappointing because every other transaction I've had here has been handled with care. As a loyal, long-time customer, I hope Kaoru's attitude improves, because the warmth and professionalism I've consistently received from Kazumi and Tamaki are what make Toho Shoji such a special place.
