Once you check in for your rental, they shuttle you to a boat launch and see you off into the water. There were about 25 people that went out in our group, but after 10-15 min, we were spread out enough that it felt like we had the whole creek to ourselves! Couple of tips: 1) Make sure one person in your part has their cell phone on them, so you can call for a ride back to the rental station. 2) Take advantage of the restrooms before leaving the rental station. When we went, there weren't really any accessible pit stops for a bathroom break (though maybe it might be different if water levels were lower).

She had promised to contact us regarding instructor availability as James, who she said would normally teach the course, was recovering from injury. Unfortunately, our need for the courses was of a time sensitive nature, and we were forced to cancel part of our vacation because we had not completed them. Beth never called to schedule a class, nor did she provide any services whatsoever related to the deposited funds. However, she refuses to refund us. She has earned absolutely none of the deposited funds. She didn't even try. I've given Beth several opportunities to do the right thing over the past several months. I've sent messages via the contact us link on her website, and never received even one response. I've talked to her via text message, which for some reason seems to be her preferred form of communication, however unprofessional that may seem. I sent her a written request for a refund in the mail, which she ignored. I even submitted a complaint to the Better Business Bureau. She chose not to respond to the complaint, as you can see on the company's BBB website, where it also shows their current C+ rating. Because I have given Beth multiple chances to do the right thing, and she has chosen not to, I want to caution potential customers. A scuba instructor is someone you should have complete trust in. Beth is not a trustworthy person. She choose to keep money that she has not earned, and ruin any chance for future business from us, instead of doing the right thing. Please carefully consider other options in Pittsburgh and the surrounding area, of which there are many.

Took my 2.5 year old for his first swimming lesson this past week. Big Blue just opened in…read morecranberry township within the past month. Upon entering I was greeted by the general manager who gave me a quick tour and told me all about how our lesson would go. There are several dressing rooms, cubbies to keep belongings while in the lesson, disposable wet bags, and a little play area for kids waiting for their turn for a lesson. The pools are separated into lanes based on a child's class level. The entry way/seating area for parents and the pool is separated by glass so parents can watch with ease while not being in the pool area. My child was in the youngest baby class since this was his first lesson and therefore I was required to get into the pool with him. We had a great time and he had a great first lesson. His teacher was kind and kept things moving on a tight schedule, but there was still time to accomplish everything necessary for the lesson. I was impressed by the scheduling and promptness of the lessons so that kids were in and out on time for the next class. During the lesson my child was taught to put a "balloon" in his mouth (hold his breath) and to blow bubbles in the water. He was taught safe ways to enter and exit the pool. Parents were taught various holds that would allow for their child to explore the water in safe ways. Kids were encouraged to begin learning how to float on their backs, how to get to the wall and hold on, and were taught very introductory swimming, by pushing off from the wall with the help of a parent. After the lesson we were able to get out, rinse out in the shower that's right off the pool (soap dispensers have baby shampoo/wash in them), and then make our way to the dressing room to change. My son loved every minute and we are excited to come back! The pool and pool room were very comfortably warm which made getting into the pool easy. Leaving the pool into the changing area was freezing though. Haha! Overall a great experience and so glad to have a swim school closer to home!

Visit Aspinwall Riverfront Park and you'll find a great spot to rent a kayak! This rental booth is…read moreoperated by Kayak Pittsburgh, a specific project that's part of the Venture Outdoors nonprofit group. Aspinwall is their 3rd Kayak Pittsburgh location in the area (with other locations on the North Shore and in North Park). With plenty of free parking available at this little park, you normally just have to show up and pay for your kayak. (Note that during 2020, an online reservation is required due to the popularity of their kayaks and because they need to control the number of people in the area at a time.) You'll be provided with a life vest and paddle after checking in. The staff will also answer your questions and provide tips on kayaking if you need them. They'll then help you get your boat into the water, where you can paddle at your own pace and enjoy the scenery. I do want to mention that because this is a river location, you'll want to keep the strength of the current and any wind in mind as you paddle along the Allegheny. You may find yourself working harder in one direction or another depending on what the current and wind does during your visit. So give yourself plenty of time to get back to the launch point, and be careful about overexerting yourself early on. Other tips from this regular kayaker are: bring PLENTY of water; don't forget your sunscreen and a hat; bring a waterproof bag for your valuables; and consider investing in some sports gloves so that your hands don't get too sore or blistered paddling. Do those things, and you're sure to have a blast during your time on the water!
