I have stayed at the Scottish Inns Potsdam, NY during my annual visits to the Potsdam area for the last 7 years or so, and I have consistently had a very good and pleasant experience. The family/staff is very friendly, accommodating, and helpful. My rooms have always been very clean, comfortable, quiet, and secure. If I could give this place 0 stars I would. I checked in at 3 and just dropped off the luggage and my daughter and I went to her college event and did not return to the room until 10. We drove 5 hours to get there that morning. We were both tired and had a headache. When we arrived there at 10. We pulled up to two men sitting outside smoking pot. Not only did we not feel safe we couldn't open the window to air out the musty smell of the room. When we got inside my daughter went to wash her face while I checked the beds. She found that the towels were dirty with embedded little black hairs. And I pulled back the top of the blankets and the sheets were dirty. The pillows were stained. The air conditioner did not work and it looks like black mold in the vents. The refrigerator was leaking water, so it was not cold to keep our leftovers in. But that really didn't matter after seeing the sheets and the dirty towels. We immediately packed up and left we did not stay the night. We immediately got in our car lock the door and left. After we checked into another hotel down the road that was clean I called the manager and he refused to give me back my money and was very rude. We did not stay there. I would not recommend this motel to anyone. Considering the fact that we will be going there for the next four years while my daughter attends college, he had no interest in trying to help me. This was the worst hotel experience of my life, and I have traveled all over this country. The man st the front desk was incredibly rude. He charged an extra $100 cash deposit, which he did not give me a receipt for and also did not return. He harassed myself and my guest, and told us we were not allowed any visitors. When I asked to please have a copy of the hotel visitor policy emailed to me, he threatened to call the police. Unfortunately there's no option for 0 stars. DO NOT GIVE THIS PLACE YOUR MONEY. read more

The staff was nice, the room was immaculate and aesthetically pleasing with a rustic yet clean look. The bed was very comfortable and the room was a very nice warm temperature. They are pet friendly which was an absolute necessity. The bathroom was adequately equipped, shower head has a nice pressure to it so it feels like you are actually getting cleaned. They provide Hand towels and shower towels. The only reason that this isn't getting five stars is because we weren't provided wash cloths but I supposed I should pack my own anyways. Excellent experience at a great price, if you're in Potsdam for a time then I can't recommend the Scottish Inn enough! read more

Just returned home from spending several nights at the Scottish Inn and I thought it was great, nothing fancy/no frills but an excellent value for the cost. Check in was fast and friendly. My single queen size room came with a microwave and a large mini frig, air conditioner (I didn't need it) and a super comfortable and clean bed, the room and bathroom were both extremely clean. read more

My father went to stay there and we were told it was a pet friendly hotel, but management failed to mention there was any additional fee.When he showed up after the 5 hour drive to get there, they wanted to charge him an additional 30$ fee PER DOG! Plus when my father said he didn't want to stay due to neglect to convey information, they still said they were going to charge him for 2 nights! But he argued that the policy is with 24 hour notice he should be able to cancel the 2nd night. We lost the money for the first night. Very shady and argumentative. Extremely rude. And very quick to scheem you out of your money wherever they can. read more

November 3rd and they wouldn't turn the heat on, we've stayed here before and the staff was rude, even coming into the rooms while we were there to make sure we hadn't smoked in the rooms. We don't smoke. Bedding is old, beds are covered in plastic. Just don't expect much from this spot, even though you still might be shelling out 70-100$ a room. read more

So we decided to try this motel after reading the reviews. I'm sorry I tried it. The hotel management was extremely rude. Morning wake up by slamming on our door at 9am for "housekeeping." I have been at other hotels right after Covid so I understand that breakfast will be usually not to great but here they didn't even have hot water for the tea bags they had out or a way to heat it up in the room. And if you wanted water you had to pay for it. The breakfast was literally on a side table in the main office with 2 small things of cereal and donuts that you get in the gas station. And when my mom asked if she could get hot water for her tea the woman at the front desk yelled at her "NO" and that was it. I will only say the room was clean and that was it. Oh and I did see them going into occupied rooms making sure they were not messing the place up. Super shady. Will not waste my time or money here again. read more

Their posted average room price is between $62 and $70 but when I got there after traveling 12 hours and in desperate need of a place to get some much needed sleep, they tried to charge me $194 per night. I flat out refused so she lowered the price to $127. I had no choice to pay it, it was that or risk falling asleep at the wheel... but that wasn't the worst of it. The man at the front desk was so incredibly rude!! Traveling from a tropical climate I was overjoyed to see snow on the ground when I woke up from my 2 hour nap. When I arrived there was no snow, when I woke up everything was pristine white. I stepped outside, lit a cigarette and gleefully headed to where I saw people whom I thought I could share the joyful moment with, that being the front desk (Now I understand why no one else was around). I didn't even get to the door when it opened and I heard, "no no no, get away" and the door slammed closed. He them shoved me off with a motion of both hands so i quickly stopped in my tracks. I assume it was a reaction to the cigarette I was holding, however, the reaction sucked the air out of what could have been a very positive and fun social interaction. I had no intention of entering the office (or any indoor area) with a cigarette in my hand, and there was a stand up ashtray outside the door. It was disappointing, to be polite. It was horrible, his entire extended harem of a dozen or so females live on the premises, and I was put in the room right next to them. It sounded like they were playing basketball against the walls with all of the banging and clanging going on. They were laughing and speaking extremely loud, such a disturbance of peace! This group of 12 or so women all move around together, piling in and out of an SUV all day, coming and going every hour or two. Last but not least, I decided not to continue my stay and checked out after the first night. They did not issue me a refund or credit. I ended up contacting my bank and disputed everything above their highest web quote of $70 and the $30 ridiculous pet fee. To be honest,My total bill for two nights on my statement was $300, don't ask me how aside from some very creative accounting practices. If I could rate lower than 1 star, I would. I stay in Potsdam frequently and this is a great place to stay to save money. The best part is that it's about half the price of many other hotels in town and it usually has rooms opens when other places in town are full. Pros: 1) Free wifi. They aren't one of those places that make you pay extra for it. 2) Lowest prices in Town. Nightly stay around $70 3) Small breakfast area to take food with you on the go 4) Usually has availability. The rooms are always clean and you can sign in fairly early. I have asked for late check outs and they have always been able to work with me about that. You do have to call on the phone to make a reservations, but you talk to a person and don't talk to a machine. The location is right in the middle of Clarkson campus and Walmart, so it's very desirable towards visiting your kids at college. read more

This is a great place to stay to save a few bucks. It's not a Hampton Inn but it's just as nice as the other non named brand motels in the area. Two complaints... charged me $20 per night extra because I had my dog ... I get it ... might have to clean a bit more ... but they didn't do anything extra during our stay ... so just a $20 surcharge per stay would have bee more appropriate. The other problem is the lights are on motion sensors and the outlet between the beds was attached to the lights so my phone didn't charge the first night ... the alarm clock was also in that outlet rendering it useless. I get saving money by putting the lights on sensors but this was downright annoying and unpractical. read more

About three years ago I stayed at this hotel while my grandmother was in the hospital. (We didn't live in Potsdam at that time). No problems checking in. The family was nice, even if they were a bit inquisitive and watched us like a hawk. Hello? Not the best business practice. Make guests feel uneasy why don't you? Though, we didn't plan to stay at a hotel and they had the best rates in town. So we were leaving the office and on the way to our room there were pink swastika's. Yes you read that right PINK SWASTIKA'S. That disturbed me beyond belief... Like this is supposed to be a business and you have symbols of hate?? Disgusting. Fast forward to last night. My family and a friend were helping a homeless man. It's sad but there are homeless people right here in our backyard of Potsdam. Social Services put the man up for a night at this hotel. Patel (that's what he said his name was) was very nice and he was very kind to the gentleman We helped him get into the room alright. Then we said we'd be back the following day. So today the homeless man was kicked out. The cleaning staff went into the room before nine. Found some ashes on the floor and swore up hill and down that he had smoked in the room. My mom and her friend went into the room and they couldn't smell anything. They saw the ashes and it looked like they had fallen off of the man's clothes. The only thing they smelled was mildew. Which was the room and not the man. I find it disgusting how they are trying to extort the homeless man or social services. Tried to get $100 from my mother because of the small bit of ashes. There was no damages to the room. The homeless man didn't even use their shampoo when he could have. He folded the towel after his shower. Does that sound like someone who is disrespectful? He was thankful that he had a place to shower and somewhere other than a park bench to sleep for the night. Patel you disgust me. Your whole business disgusts me. You need a better business practice.
