So thankful a friend recommended this place. It is a quaint, family-run lodge. It's not new, actually the building look fairly old, and there's some carpet that could stand to be replaced. But it was clean and tidy. We were staying for a work trip and were going to be here at least 7 days, and my request to be moved to a room with a kitchen was immediately worked out. The whole family appears to work here, as a very sweet and cordial young lady has been doing the housekeeping each day. Lodge is directly on the gorgeous St. Lawrence River and the view is outstanding. The lodge property is all within walking distance, which was nice since we have friends staying here as well.

    St Lawrence River

We picked Stone Fence because it sits right along the St Lawrence River and let me tell you the views are absolutely incredible!! When I booked online I didn't realize they had cabins so we asked if we could upgrade and they were so nice about it and we got to upgrade right away! Thank you!! The staff is very friendly and inviting, they serve continental breakfast and everyday was something new! Cooked fresh and hot everyday, the ladies were the best! I just loved StoneFence, if you're coming to the North Country this is where you need to stay!

    Mold

No, just no. BLACK MOLD, dirty bathrooms, disgusting "breakfast". Seriously, I was so excited about this place due to the advertised views of the St. Lawrence river, but there wasn't a view as trees blocked the river. I was dropped off so I had to stay the night and it was so disgusting. The mold is a serious health hazard.

A continuous deck accommodating a couple of gas bbqs, tables and chairs for each room, a small kitchen area (fridge, microwave, coffee maker sink), gas fireplace, etc! On turning the cover of the bed we found a mint on each pillow. Such a lovely treat in addition to the clean well kept establishment. A pro or con is the no children in parts of the Inn, not sure if in all parts. Strict no smoking in no smoking rooms (not sure if smoking rooms exist as we are not smokers). Beyond the deck are terraced gardens down to the water's edge. In the morning a generous continental breakfast is included.

The rates are reasonable, the service excellent, and the cottage was clean and cozy (did I mention 2 gas fireplaces?). I'll definitely make Dewar's a destination whenever I'm in the Prescott/Ottawa area.

Breakfast food and service excellent. Large portions. Starbucks coffee free, front desk in morning fantastic. Makes no sense, you can bring free coffee into Restaurant but if you order it with breakfast, $5.00. Front desk, Jacob evening fantastic. Some daytime staff at desk unfriendly and so, so. Shower, no cold water in couple rooms, some only hot water. Still overall recommended. Nice pool and hottub. Large event space and easy parking. Ps Robes are very nice and worth $75. First, a fire alarm at 2:30 am meant I didn't sleep the rest of the night (meanwhile, I had to check out the next day and drive 3 hours to get home. Maybe no big deal for a young person in good health, but for a senior with myriad health issues, this was the start of a bad experience that just kept snowballing. Next, the hotel's boiler broke and it took them all night and well past 9 am before it was fixed. Right at the time when everyone is trying to take their shower, but can't so they can't get out, check out or just wash their hands???? How does a business whose sole service is providing "hospitality" NOT have a backup boiler?? Not a perfect solution, but a backup could have been activated and some service restored while the main boiler was being repaired during the morning wake-up, get out and go hours. The hotel doesn't offer a continental breakfast, just an overpriced and reportedly mediocre restaurant onsite. They do offer coffee, but there was NO coffee when I checked, even though it was still well within the window when they purport to offer it--and no one in sight to ask if they could refill the carafes. So now, I've had it. All I want to do is get the hell out. But I have severe COPD so I have to lug my oxygen machine as well as regular luggage anytime I travel. I could'nt manage all of it by myself. But of course all TWO of the luggage carts were in use by able-bodied single thirty somethings or families with children. Wouldn't it make sense for the hotel to reserve at least ONE cart for people in wheelchairs or who have trouble BREATHING??? When I went back to retrieve my oxygen machine, the key card would not open the room door because it was just past checkout time, so I had to go back to the lobby and ask the front desk to temporarily reactivate my card key. Will I visit Clayton NY again? Absolutely. Will I stay at the Harbor Hotel again? Sorry to say, No.

Finding the entrance was like a game of hide-and-seek gone wrong. There's no signage, zero lighting, and walking back at night from the main street feels more like the opening scene of a horror movie than a relaxing vacation. It's eerie, deserted, and downright creepy. The restaurant? Only serves dinner--no breakfast, no lunch. Good luck figuring out when it opens, though. When I asked the teenage staff at Pointe Grill, they stared at me blankly before going back to fishing and smoking off the dock directly in front of the entrance. It was like interrupting their hangout spot, not asking a simple question as a paying guest. The property itself is in serious decline. Dirty, dank, and reeking of cigarettes and mildew. The smell hits you immediately, as do the scattered cigarette butts littering the grounds. It's clear that upkeep is not a priority. To their credit, the front desk staff were friendly and welcoming--but that level of service unfortunately doesn't extend to the rest of the establishment. The rooms with a view of Boldt Castle might sound romantic, but step inside and it's like walking into a forgotten relic of the 1970s. The decor is outdated to the point of being uncomfortable: mirrored walls, an aging jacuzzi, and cheap, bubbling vinyl flooring that looks like it was installed by someone's cousin over a weekend. The door to our room didn't even seal properly--it looked like it had been kicked in at least once, maybe more. The balcony was filthy, crawling with bugs, covered in vines, and in desperate need of a power wash. The railing was rickety and rusted--definitely not somewhere you'd want to linger with a drink in hand. As for amenities, the hot water took a full ten minutes to arrive, which felt symbolic of the overall experience: slow, neglected, and not worth the wait. For the price per night, this place is a complete letdown. It feels more like a rundown roadside motel than the getaway it pretends to be. Skip it. There are far better options in the area that actually care about their guests--and their property.
