This was dull. The tour guide ponted out every railroad track, station (with schedules and destinations), train disappearing into the woods, and parked sleeper car. He also pointed out a vast array of garden plants such as rhododendrons. Thrown in for variety were a couple of bridges on roads we would not be taking.
On the plus side, despite the verbal incursion of railroads and gardens into the enjoyment of the scenery, there were a few historic stories. The stop at the castle on Loch Ness was rushed, with about 40 minutes between parking and needing to be on the boat.
We would have liked more history and local color. We were puzzled that the coach stopped to examine highland cattle but the runestone got only a passing mention and no stop. All in all this tour gained us sore bums and lost us a day we could have enjoyed elsewhere. read more
