First trip to Edinburgh Scotland! My friend booked us a tour at The Choclatarium, and I have to say the tour was so great! Carina the tour guide was informative with a great personality. She imparted her knowledge with enthusiasm and some humor sprinkled in. We arrived a little late for the tour we booked and we're not made to feel bad about it. We were asked if we had any dietary restrictions and I told her I was vegan. The woman that checked us in let the tour guide know. Every part of the tasting, I was provided with vegan version. It was all so delicious! We were given drinking chocolate when we arrived, it was made with oat milk. Warm, rich and creamy..so good! After a talk, we were led into a room where we sampled chocolate and then made our own chocolate bars. I was provided with dark chocolate, vegan marshmallows and I added a pinch of red pepper flakes. I poured into a mold shaped like a castle. Best chocolate bar ever! While we waited for our chocolate bars to set. We listened to some history of the cocoa beans and the guide made a drink that we all toasted to. She explained the ingredients the Aztecs used as she mixed it up, minus the blood of a human sacrifice. This was an amazing experience, I would highly recommend! read more

My Mom and I had this on our list of places to visit while we were in Edinburgh and it was a fun experience. We didn't do a tasting or anything but we went into the shop and looked around and bought a few things. As I was checking out, the super nice employee asked if I liked Scotch, yes I do, and she let me taste test some new scotch truffles that she made, for free. It was an impromptu truffle tasting, which was amazing. The truffles are so good there but I wish they had more of the in-house made chocolates as the majority of the store is for cool chocolate creations that were created elsewhere. We had a day to explore Edinburgh after enjoying the Taylor Swift concert and I noticed The Chocolatorium was high on the list of things to do with kids. I went to book it a week ahead and most of the tours were sold out (possibly an extra busy week thanks to Taylor) so I grabbed a 5:30pm tour and figured chocolate for dinner! My 13 year old daughter & her friend were just fine with that. We walked in a few minutes late, but were given a delicoius cup of a very rich hot chocolate and sat down to learn about chocolate. It was educational, but our tour guide was very engaging and kept us happy with chocolate samples as she taught us all about chocolate. From there we moved into another room where it was time to make chocolate bars. You could choose between regular or dark chocolate and they had tons of toppings, some unique to the UK like smarties. I was sure to put some smarties into my chocolate bar, which I named the Edinburcrunch. While our chocolate bars were hardening in the fridge we went into one last room where we were able to taste a ton of different chocolates. All were so good and I definitely got my chocolate fix for the week (or maybe month). I also learned a lot and will likely be thinking of this tour when I'm eating chocolate in the future. We left with our chocolate bars in hand, which (days later) I still haven't eaten since I had my fill of delicious chocolate, but will likely indulge soon. We had a wonderful visit to the Chocolatarium recently. After seeing lots of amazing castles, cathedrals, and other historical places, we decided to mix in something different. It was such a fun time! A group of about 12 people go through the chocolate journey together, which starts off with learning about the origins of cacao, the process of going from farm to end product, and some other interesting trivia. The first taste you get is a small sample of hot drinking chocolate, which is something I absolutely love! Then you try some milk and dark chocolate to taste the difference. The group then moves over to a room where you continue to learn about the chocolate making process and make your own candy bar. There are several candy bar molds to choose from and about 20 different add-ins. Such fun! The final part is going to the tasting room to taste chocolates from around the world. Some have crazy flavors like mushroom (weird), ghost pepper (it was so spicy!), and maple bacon pancake (actually quite good). There are about 40 varieties to choose from, and most people try 5 or so different flavors. The tour leader made the experience even more enjoyable. I really loved this tour, and it was a great memory for my daughter and me to take home from our vacation. They offer several tours a day, but the space is limited so make sure to reserve your spot in advance! They also have many chocolate products available for sale, and you don't have to be on the tour to peruse the shop. read more

My knowledge of chocolate was limited to that it was 'originated' as a drink by the Aztecs and I loved it with an infusion of chilli or ginger. After about two hours in the Chocolatarium, with our host Kelly, I learned so much more. Learned and tried that Aztec drink which, I will say, was an experience. Quizzed on the chocolate percentage in various samples, with surprising results. Made our own Christmas chocolate treat using their liquid chocolate either milk or dark and adding our own ingredients. Finally, being allowed to try out samples displayed all around the room. My tester was a white choc with reaper chilli. Hmmmm OK I will bypass that one next time. A couple of hours well spent and, as I have said, educational. Thank you everyone, especially Kelly, for an interesting meeting. This place was fun. I did not care to go because I probably eat one chocolate bar a year, but there was a spare ticket available so I took it. It was a lot of fun. Kelly was our guide and she was fabulous. She taught us just about everything there is to know about chocolate. At the end of the tour you get to make your own chocolate bar which was much more fun than I anticipated. I now have an appreciation for chocolate and can now tell the difference between types, how much chocolate they contain, and why its important to buy the good stuff. Rafa our guide was very knowledgeable about the history of chocolate and made the experience fun. We made chocolate using molds, my choice was the Scottie dogs, and could add ingredients from a variety on the tables. We took those with us along with several purchases from their store. I went on the 90 minute chocolate tour with a small group on a Thursday afternoon. Bogi was friendly, funny, and well-informed on chocolate, of course. I got to learn about the history of chocolate and cocoa beans. We tried all different types of chocolate, molded our own bars with different toppings, and tried drinks made from cocoa bean parts. I'd highly recommend. People had to wash their hands and there were barriers. read more

My wife, daughter and I reserved a chocolate making session here today along with 10 other people. Bianca was our guide in this and she made it fun as well as informative. The history and science of chocolate making was presented in an interesting and relaxed way as group members were encouraged to answer questions related to chocolate as the presentation moved along. There were many wonderful samples and the highlight was each person making their own flavor of chocolate in the mold of their choice. The ingredients you can add were numerous but included sea salt, dried orange and raspberry fruit, honeycomb, mint, ginger, Smarties, and marshmallows to name a few. They have a great little gift shop where you can buy all the many chocolate varieties we sampled including the newest version from Belgium called Rose Chocolate. If you love chocolate I would highly recommend the Chocolatarium. read more

Amazing experience! First of all very informational. We learned a lot about Chocolate how it grows and where it grows and how it is processed. I've been in the classes like this several times, but this one really stuck with me for some reason. Then we got hands-on and got to make truffles as well as a candy bar. It was so much fun and delicious. Then there was a third part of the class that I didn't know about. We had a whiskey and chocolate pairing. By this point we were so stuffed but I just wanted to try everything. The room that we were in had walls of chocolate samples so we got to try anything we wanted after the pairing. And the prices upfront were not bad at all. I got to purchase all my favorites and not break the bank. I will definitely go back here the next time I'm in Edinburgh was such a great time. read more

We enjoyed our chocolate tour at the Chocolatarium. When you arrive, you can leave your personal belongings/coats etc in lockers which is good if you have been out shopping beforehand. Once the tour starts, you are seated in a small lecture style room where your host gives you a very informative and entertaining history of chocolate. you also get some nice samples and chocolate to drink while you wait! After this, you get to make your own chocolate bar. You head into the kitchen area where you learn about how modern chocolate is made and get to make you own chocolate bar(s) sampling various flavours and toppings. Once you have finished your chef magic, you head off to the last area where you are given more information about modern chocolate history as well as flavourings. You get an initial selection of chocolates to taste from various areas which are talked about and then you get to choose some more from a wide selection to try for yourself. Our host Lucy was excellent, very informative, entertaining and a pleasure to listen to. If you are visiting Edinburgh with a sweet tooth, this is a nice way to spend a couple of hours away from the shops and sightseeing. Recommended. read more

The Chocolatarium Experience was absolutely phenomenal! The whole set up is really well organized moving from one room to the next in a systematic fashion accented by interesting facts about chocolate and plenty of chocolate tasting. Our tour leader Jamie was an absolute delight and was very knowledgable and friendly. It was very fun to make our own chocolate bar with all the toppings we wanted and even the chocolate bar shapes were fun to choose from.
