Ugh, so torn on my star rating--my partner in crime chastises me for my propensity to four-star-review everything that I enjoy. But I can't help that I like a lot of things and have very low standards! So it goes with Scoopz. Really, I'd give this place a pretty solid 3.5 stars, because... honestly. Ice cream!
When I spotted this little joint after work one evening, I was powerless to stop my feet from prancing up to the till. They had me at "knickerbocker glory" and "espresso sundae." The establishment itself is cute, but not exactly a fancy dining experience. I guess it feels a bit more cramped and less nice than some of the nicer ice cream joints in town, but if one expects a fancy dining experience when stepping into a joint called "Scoopz" then they might want to rethink things a bit. :) However, that's not to say that Scoopz wasn't clean and with some sitting room to speak of. Not only that, but I was suitably impressed by the wall of CANDY!! YEAH!!!
The ice cream itself is pretty good, but I could see this appealing more to families with children than with people with a nose for flavors. This is some SWEET stuff. I was particularly entranced by the unnaturally fluorescent rainbow of cream called "Millions" or something, which I'll admit I wasn't quite brave enough to sample (next time). As it was, my coworker and I traded out the normal vanilla for a scoop of toffee and a scoop of Kinder bueno ice cream in the espresso sundae, and neither of us were let down, at least until we got to the end: the remainder of the espresso was, without the ice cream, quite bitter and we left that untouched. Not only that, but we realized neither of us had actually tasted the Kinder portion. Quite possibly it all melted together, but still: we wanted at least a taste of it!
Regardless, this is a nice little ice cream place if you've got a hankering for something sweet, and just so happen to be in the area around the Pear Tree. Perhaps not take-yer-girl-out-for-a-fancy-date material, but definitely a solid my-girl-is-mad-at-me-how-do-i-make-it-stop, sort of thing (maybe that only works on fatties like myself)! read more
