I will DEFINITELY be coming back here! While looking for oddball things to do with a date, I suggested checking this place out. She had not been either despite being a long time local so we hit the road. On arrival the place was busy... it was the first Saturday of fall so every suburbanite in the Rochester area was out in search of pumpkin spice anything (as well as apples). If you use a Garmin like myself, it may be slightly 'off' on the destination, but not by far. Inside the store they do have a few baskets to use for purchases but when we got there only a couple of broken baskets were left... so we ended up with a good one along with a broken handled one. Not a big deal but they may need to buy more baskets. Despite it being early yet they had a lot of apples and a lot of variety. Apples were a heck of a deal compared to groceries. And the freshness is phenomenal. The guys working the apple bins were happy to provide samples. I ended up coming away with 3 different varieties, including a new variety... with a name like Cornell Experimental Variety #1 who can resist? I had heard great things about their fried cakes so of course I grabbed one of those... they offer them in plain, glazed, and cinnamon sugar dusted. I went with the cinnamon and was NOT disappointed. I could have gotten a box and eaten them all (then lived a night full of regret). Along with apples and fried cakes they offer cider, dry soup mixes, bulk spices, decor, candies, honey, maple syrup, jams and jellies, pickled items, toys, candles, and a bunch of other odds and ends. They also had a hard cider tasting room I meant to check out but did not. One downside... no real bathroom for guests. They did have a portajohn in the parking lot if you had a serious need. But that is one of those things some people would not be physically able to use (and let's be honest... no one WANTS to use anyway). Staff was extremely friendly and despite it being busy the line moved very fast. If you have not been here grab your pumpkin spice latte, put on your faux fur lined jacket, pick out your favorite Instagram filters, and get to Schutt's for some apples and fall feelings. read more

Hot fry cakes. Really is there anything better? Delish cider which I gather changes weekly with what apples are being harvested. Tons of soup mixes, snacks, etc. would have gotten a few dried soup mixes that sounded really good but insanely high sodium content. I drove all the way from Ithaca to go here. The fried cakes are amazing and the workers are so nice. Wide array of apples that are all so delicious and lots of other things such as packages to make soup, trail mix, the best apple cider, popcorn, cheese, and much more. There is also an area of the store that has novelties such as ornaments for Christmas and puzzles. When I move to CA next year, there is a very high chance I fly back home to NY in the fall just to go here. read more

5 stars? No way. I've been to Schutts for several years now. Must be that east sider bias. I'm from this side of town, but frankly, the farm markets to the west clean Schutts's clock. Schutt's was the first stop in a tour of the area tasting cider and eating donuts. After Schutts, we then traveled across town to Zarpentine Farms and Kelly's Farm Market in Hilton and finally Hurd in the Holley area. The clear winner for the best cider - Hurd Orchards. Very full and rich. Zarpentine was a good distance behind in second. Kelly's was a close third, and Schutts was a distant fourth. The cider at both Kelly's and Schutts was very weak and almost tasteless at Schutts. We didn't care for the donuts, or fry cakes as people in this area of the country like to call them at Schutts. Zarpentine's were good and we loved the apple cakes and in particular the apple pie (I had another piece for lunch today) from Kelly's which was outstanding. Of the apple farm markets, Zarpentine doesn't have any character. But the baked goods do indeed taste great. Schutts does have some atmosphere, but the place is always bustling and everyone is there to get in and get out. I actually enjoyed the homey atmosphere at Kelly's and the fact that on this cool day we could sit by a roaring fire inside on comfortable couches and chairs and enjoy our apples. I was really intrigued by the fact that you could get apple cobbler and soft serve ice cream but let me tell you, you get awfully full drinking cider and eating donuts/fry cakes. It's a good way to put on the pounds. Atmosphere, well, Hurd always will take the cake here. The farm market is truly a wonderful place and the barn was open and set for a evening dinner. It reminded me of the past Fall dinners we attended with friends that were so wonderful. You really must make an effort to attend one of these dinners, the owners put on such wonderful meals featuring their own fruits and vegetables. I don't think it's fair at all to downgrade a rating simply because it's cold, Marissa. That's a risk you take with an environment like this. The farm market and the dinners and luncheons they do are unparalleled in this area and if you haven't heard about them, Google them to find out why they have such a following. Anyway, pumpkins and gourds are nice, but the selection is better eleswhere, Best of Rochester, no way. They do a nice job of commercializing what they do here and it's clearly the neatest and nicest of three of the four markets we visited but from a product standpoint, sorry, they don't take the cake. I'm not knocking anyone's traditions. I have come to Schutt's for years now. But now I know that there's better out there. I encourage others to visit different places and make the comparisons for themselves. ADDENDUM: I received a cautionary note after writing this to try Schutt's again in November when they are pressing their Russet apples as the early season apples tend to be a bit astringent. I will definitely try again to see if it improves. My memory certainly tells me that it was better in past years. But it wasn't that the cider was astringent, Alex, it just lacked any flavor. Such a fun place to stop by and check out. We have been coming by here for years... Apples, cider, apple frost, pie and doughnuts... yummy! It's a fall favorite but a great experience all year round. A few years ago we decided for our October wedding we would do a cider doughnut cake and hot mulled cider. Just made my first Schutt's trip of the season and remembered that I had written a Best of Rochester Critic's Pick for City Newspaper featuring their store a few years ago. Copying that as my review, as it still holds true: No matter what the calendar or weather say, it's not truly fall until I've made a trip to Schutt's Apple Mill. This cozy country store has the classic autumn offerings of pumpkins, apples, homemade cider, and cider donuts, along with home goods themed for the upcoming holidays. I even found the exact same placemats my mother used for every dinner of my childhood. But Schutt's is also creating what has become a new fall classic for me, the Apple Frost. In so many words, an Apple Frost is a thick apple cider milkshake slushie that you can tell is made with homemade cider by the look, taste, and texture of it. There's no ice cream in it, but they do use a dairy-based milkshake powder. For just $2.25, you can get a serving that is, for me, large enough to share, despite the overwhelming tastiness of it. I haven't found any other fresh apple cider drinks like this in Rochester and, honestly, I hope I don't. I like the uniqueness of it, and also want as many excuses as possible to make a trip to Schutt's to fill up on goodies, childhood memories, and my favorite fall pick-me-up. read more

After I purchased an apple pie, before leaving the counter I inquired if the crust was made with shortening or butter. The elderly clerk didn't know and replied they don't make them, but get them in frozen and then bake them. I then asked apologizing for the inconvenience, please credit my cc, since I did not want it. She did the credit, but not without grumbling under her voice and complaining to a young man who worked there. I would think an apple farm would indeed make their own apple pies, since they have a kitchen on the premises, and especially when the pie is nearly $13.00. If you're looking for homemade, fresh apple pies, I would search elsewhere. read more

I used to come here at least a few times every autumn when I was kid. After making the trip back to Western New York we decided to pay this place a visit. I hadn't been here in at least 20 years. Amazingly, it hasn't changed. All the fond memories of my childhood visits came rushing back to me the moment I stepped inside. This is the kind of place you want to visit with family especially if you have small kids. This place has an amazing selection of fresh apples, probably at least a dozen or so varieties. Their cider is excellent. Their donuts are absolutely top-notch: don't overlook them! My personal favorite is the apple freeze, sort a frozen apples and cream mix but with the consistency of a Slurpee or something. It's awesome, definitely try it. There are so many other things to check out here: old-fashioned candies, dried fruits, all manner of unique country knick-knacks. You can easily spend another 20 minutes just wandering around in here. My husband fell in love with Schutts after a visit in 2015. For a whole year and a half he's been making the long journey to Schutts every week for their apple cider. He knows it's made with his favorite kind of apples (Apple crisp). He even bought a special expensive stainless steel thermos to take his cider to work. For the last month he's been disappointed. Let me start with saying that, you will find no better fry cake that exists, anywhere, It ranks supreme among all fry cake competitors! Now let me move on to the cider, which often changes due to the apple they are using for that batch! It's always outstanding! I wouldn't say it's the best cider of all time, but I will say it's my personal favorite! Schutt's has been THE place to go for apples, cider, and doughnuts in the eastern half of Monroe County for many decades. I started going there as a child in the 1960s when it was just a small space around what is now the counter where you pick up cider. Over the years, their well-earned success has allowed this family operation to expand in steady well-considered steps to be the extensive cider & country store operation that they run today. I've always loved how they store apples under nitrogen to keep them from spoiling, so that we all get to enjoy cider all year long. It always seem strange to me that other cider mills shut down in November. I've been spoiled by Schutt's! Whenever I'm back in the area, the trip isn't complete until I've made the trek to Webster to grab a gallon of cold cider (made from Russet apples if I get lucky) and some tasty doughnuts. Cheers to them that they bought up the equipment and recipe with which to make them when the old supplier closed up shop years ago. Add a stop at Schutt's to your shopping routine. I went here the Friday before Mother's Day, they were out of donuts and pie for the night which was a bummer. I decided not to review them then. I came by another day and got to try the donuts, why on earth are there no apples in these donuts ?! Schutt's Apple Mill has been a staple of the east side of the city for as long as I can remember. My wife and I buy apples, cider, jams, fried cakes, acorn squash and local honey from Schutt's. We've bought some cheese and cured meats as well. The service is always top notch and they're open year round. I think people forget that Schutt's is open all year and that makes me sad because you can get apples in May that are as good as just picked due to modern storage techniques. They have a lot to offer all year so when you're looking for a way to spend a half an hour in July, stop in for some goodies. read more

went here because i heard great things from someone at work. that their baked goods melt in your mouth and they have so much to offer other than food. so i walk in and i noticed a ton of different apples, crafts, and candy. i went specifically for cider and apple crisp pie. i took a walk around more and noticed all sorts of different stuff from books to aprons to baking supplies. the apple mill part was busy with workers making more cider as they kept cranking out more gallons and half gallons. i kinda wish we could see more, meaning how they make the cidar. i then ventured to the baking area from what i heard great things about. the donuts were going fast, there was no more fried cakes and 3 pies left. i noticed one apple pie left so i grabbed that and asked if they had anymore apple crisp left. apparently they stop making the baked good mid day. which sounds rediculous seeing how it started getting busy after i got there. people started showing up in their work clothes haha. so some advise if you are going for the baked good, make sure you get there early! the cider was okay, i feel like it might've tasted more like apple juice though from others that i've had. i feel like i might have been spoiled by always going to Kelly's farm market in hilton,i love that place and they always have so much to offer at all times. i would probably come back to schutts to try the other stuff and since its closer to me to get apples and try the other baked goods when its available. read more

I have been a fan for years. I go weekly all winter long for their tasty "controlled storage" apples. I also shop all fall for their fresh apples. Their mulled apple cider pkg. is great for entertaining.They have the best fry cakes in town.(I should know I worked at a local donut shop for 6 years.)
