I understand upcharging on parts but to be charged over 300 percent is not in any way fair. Was told they only install parts from there distributers but to be charged 3 xs the dealer cost is not fair my parts were less than 200 from auto store was charged over 600 in parts. I am 71 years old and have had my share of cars and car problems. Most folks getting their cars repaired have transactions with car repair shops. Transactions are not relationships. For the last 30+ years, I have had my car repairs done at a shop where I knew the owner and knew the owner cared about me. I have referred family, friends and associates. They have all been pleased with both the quality and cost of repairs, as well as the friendly family atmosphere at the repair shop. I truly love Schrader's. I have lived in the Wedge since the late eighties and really wish that I had embraced them sooner!!!! We currently have a 2008 Volkswagon Jetta which we purchased for my daughter to take with her to college. It seems that the kids these days are not nearly as anxious generally to drive as they were when I was 16, 1 1/2 million years ago. She had put off the road test until the week that she leaves for college. Sadly, when getting ready to practice parallel parking the night before the test, she went over a curb and knocked something awry causing the check engine light to come on. When her Dad looked under the hood, there were clearly some issues that we were concerned about. Needless to say, she canceled the road test! I brought the car to Schrader's on Monday morning where they plugged in their computer and tried to do the diagnosis but there were no codes that they recognized. I was confidently assured that it was safe to drive as long as their were no noises and the light was on steady. I brought it back on Tuesday, though not nearly as early in the morning as they had requested. They were extremely friendly and helpful! The repair was completed before 5 o'clock and the cost was a $140 which we found pretty reasonable. It is a clean shop with very nice people and a great history! read more

They then called to go over the results and their recommendations. I'm not used to dealing with an auto shop that has such great communication skills! My 09 Impala had a code indicating 'traction control' issues. The code appeared after activation when accelerating from a dead stop. They diagnosed a bad sensor probably caused by worn bearing. Reasonable labor and parts and I was on my way. About a week later the code appeared, along with the symptoms, so I called them back. Schrader's found the harness they had removed and reinstalled in order to do the work was now compromised and need of replacement. They actually said, "we gave you a finished job on this system in regards to this wheel. Either we caused the damage or failed to find the damage on the original work." A new harness and labor was exactly $0.00. The work was finished very quickly. I had never done business with them before and was a complete stranger to the staff. The TL;DR of this review is that as a person with very little knowledge about cars, especially as a woman who sometimes feels like people in the world are trying to take advantage of me not knowing about things, I feel SO comfortable talking to the people here and trusting them with my car. I feel like their process is really transparent. Their prices are fair, they work with you in a non-judgmental way, and you can always tell that their priority is keeping you safe rather than selling you things. I don't have a Yelp account and have never written a review before but I CANNOT speak more highly of Schrader's and I really just want to recommend it to everyone. I am really writing this review with young people who don't have much experience going to mechanics (like me) in mind. I would give Schrader's 1 million stars if I could. I have been taking my car here for a couple years. It is my first car, my baby, the only property I own. I do not have a great relationship with my dad (who was the 'car parent' when I was growing up) and feel like I don't have a close figure in my life to ask about car things. I also spent years being too anxious to even set foot in a car because of a bunch of terrible technical issues I had with our family car when I was learning to drive as a teenager. All of this background info is to emphasize that feeling safe in a car and getting trustworthy car advice is REALLY, REALLY important to me on many levels. The guys at Schrader's have such a father/uncle/brother vibe and I always feel SO comfortable asking them even silly questions. The guys at the front desk are literally the kindest, nicest, most patient people. I schedule regular oil changes/tire rotations with them but I also have like needed them to replace a part in an emergency and they always get me on the schedule in an amount of time appropriate for the level of urgency (within the week for an oil change, within an hour for an emergency, etc). You can tell them exactly what your schedule is/what you need and you can tell they are genuinely doing their best to figure it out with you. I generally find car repair places to be really hypermasculine and uncomfortable spaces but Schrader's is not like that. I think it is family-owned and run and you can tell they are just really gentle people. Beyond how nice they are, they do such good work. Basically, what happens is you schedule the appt and tell them what's up, they will guess how long it will take, you drop your car off, they inspect it, and then they wait for confirmation from you about their plans before they proceed. That means that if you drop off your car for something and they determine that that thing is not necessary, they won't just do it and charge you. These days they also have a really cool 'car report' that they send you that talks about all the major parts of you car and identifies different problems as urgent, medium urgent, or not urgent. You can then call them and talk through the report and they will tell you how much stuff would cost, how long it would take, etc. I REALLY love how they prioritize safety--i.e. they will say "this is almost broken, but if it breaks it will not affect the safety of the car, so if you choose not to fix it right now that's okay" vs "this is a really important thing that can affect the safety of the car so we would recommend you prioritize this." It really really helps me in making on-the-spot decisions. They will also always give additional information, context, quotes, etc if you ask them and don't make you feel pressured or rushed. They also keep thorough records of all the work they've done on your car that you can call and ask them about/that they use to do what's best for your car. I've gone to this place several times now and haven't had a bad experience yet. This most recent time though has prompted me to leave a comment. I took my car there back in May for an inspection and to get front brakes. They told me I would need rear brakes a few months later. Come August my brakes began squeaking so I took the car in to get my rear brakes. They did need replacing, but the guys told me that it was the front brakes that were squeaking so we set up another appointment to get that fixed. They acknowledged that the brake work was done there in May and therefore fixed up the front brakes for free and now it runs like a dream. I can't imagine many car shops would extend the same courtesy. As far as I'm concerned there is no other place to take your car in Rochester. Pricing is extremely fair here too read more

I was told by Monro the very loud sound when I started my car was not the muffler. They told me it was the engine lifters. When Schrader's checked it out they found that there was not a loud sound but a soft sound. Consensus among their mechanics told them that rather than ask a very large some of money to repair the engine, I could simply drive this car, as is. It has 100,000 miles on it and soon will be traded in, now that I know it is having the beginning of another problem. Maybe the very loud sound appeared loud by echoes in my garage. It quickly went away too, once engine warmed. They also addressed my vehilcle inspection very honestly. They took their time in going over what needed to be done to pass inspection and communicated so clearly to me that I really understood exactly everything I needed to know. Back in November I came in with issues of my exhaust being loud and hanging. They charged me a lot of money and sent me on my way saying it was fixed. My exhaust finally fell completely off (had to go back to multiple places after because it would start to drop and every single one would just shake their head at the job) and the mechanic I went to told me this time whoever fixed it last time at Schrader's didn't actually fix anything but cut into my catalytic converter and a bunch of other parts and welded pieces together. So now I have to get an entire new exhaust system because whoever did it at the garage had no idea what they were doing. I did give them two stars and not one because they were nice guys. But I was charged $500 for them to destroy my exhaust system and now I have to pay more than double that to fix their "repair." If they had done it slightly different it could save me about $600. But instead vital pieces were cut into and it never actually fixed the problem to begin with since the exhaust still kept falling anyways and it was super loud. read more
