SCHOOP'S FOR THE WIN! First time in Hammond, IN... WHAT do we eat?!? Schoop's is a local Mom & Pop close to our hotel and The Hammond Sports Complex, that had pretty decent yelp reviews, how about we sample the dinner yummies here??? Yelp directions are on point. Designated parking is available in the lot next to the restaurant which is definitely convenient for the customer! Thank you! Didn't have to wait long to sit down. Interestingly, there are quite a few booths with "decorations" on it, very cool for sure (Who doesn't like the Three Stooges and Lucy & Desi!?!), however they limit access to sitting in those areas, which is unfortunate because the booths have the best lighting compared to center of the room tables. Barbara was our server and loved her spunkiness! Note... you have to designate which free toppings (on bottom right of menu) you want on your burger/sandwich, so be prepared for that question! LOL! I was not ready and that elicited some hilarious banter with Barbara ;) Okay, let's eat!!! BREADED PORK TENDERLOIN: I read somewhere that the Breaded Pork Tenderloin sandwich, aka The Pork Schnitzel, was THE JAM in Indiana. Never heard of it in California so I wanted to see what this was all about! I'm in luck because Schoop's has their own version on the menu! When it landed I was like... Whoa! The tenderloin is bigger than the bun!?!! Nothing small about this thing! Apparently, this Indiana Pork Tenderloin/Pork Schnitzel thang can get even bigger but I was pretty happy with Schoop's option. The breading is Crisp and the tenderloin is not thin like a McD's hamburger, but more like a McD's Quarter Pounder. Meat is juicy and flavorful. Filling for sure. Paired with BOMB tater tots... GREAT INTRO to the Indiana Pork Tenderloin Sandwich!! SWISS MUSHROOM BURGER: Schoop's claim to fame is their Burgers and there are many props to that fame decorating the restaurant, even a "Top 10 in America" (CNN Eatocracy) claim! Now we gatz "expectations" lol Mushrooms are Wifey's Go To, so of course we go for the 'shrooms! Grilled onions to perfection, grilled mushrooms to perfection and a smash burger that had edges crisped just right and a flavorful center. Wifey rarely finishes a burger but this one was GONZO! Luckily she offered me a bite! Solid burger!!! TATER TOTS: PERFECT! Crisp on the outside, yet soft inside. Tastefully flavored. No greasy aftertaste. DEELISH! We doin' the big order next time! This is one of my favorite places to go in the area for a burger. The price is not cheap, but you are getting a very good size burger, when you order a basket of fries it is enough to share with two people maybe even three. My husband and I like the fries so usually one basket suits the both of us. They have desserts, and those are usually in the form of some kind of pudding and very good. I've had soups there before but they kind of missed the mark. Also, one day my husband was craving schoops really bad and I wasn't very hungry and had a grilled cheese sandwich. That wasn't so great, and I should've known better because I'm at a burger joint! This is such a great find. Do not judge a book by its cover AKA the outside doesn't represent the inside of this super fun place. Atmosphere, service, staff and food all top notch for a diner. Was excited to try this place while in Hammond for work based on the high reviews and delicious-sounding burgers on the menu. Stopped in after work on a Monday at 5pm and I was the only customer there. You seat yourself, so I chose a booth, and a server was there immediately to take my drink order and bring a menu. I ordered a water along with the Cowboy burger and a side of onion rings. The waitress said it would be 8-9 minutes and my food would be out. Perfect. Everything arrived promptly, and the burger was huge and looked tasty. She left me with silverware and a cup of ranch for the onion rings and was gone. Then she never came back. At all. Not to see how my food was, to bring me a check, nothing. I sat there for roughly 15 minutes waiting on a check and finally asked another waitress walking by if she could get it. She directed me to the takeout counter and said they would take care of me. I never saw my original server again. The food was good - a notch above fast food. I enjoyed the burger a lot, the bun was soft and fresh, the burger was pattied really thin, the BBQ sauce and bacon on it were a great combo. Of all the burger's places popping up right now, they all have a similar feel, but not Schoop's. They're rocking the oldschool diner feel and if nostalgia isn't enough, the burgers will be. I went double cheese burger and tater tots. I'm ready for a nap and a back rub, but man, that was a truly delicious meal. The ambience I'd give an 8/10. It feels very comfortable, inviting, well decorated, and maintains that 1980's decor. The service was definitely 10/10. The people are lovely, they'll make you feel at home and give a warm farewell too as you head out. I love the people here and am excited to go back to see them! The food is easily a 9/10. It's not gourmet, but for diner food, it's as good as it gets! We all ordered burgers and ended in the same place: pure beef bliss. Go burger. You can't go wrong. What an eye opening discovery that not all Schoop's restaurants are the same. How this location can bear the Schoop's name is beyond me!? The staff is dirty, uncontrolled hair flying around everywhere, carelessness, rubbing their faces with their hands during the coronavirus and just no manners. No smiles! The female taking my take out order was sarcastic and not qualified to serve the public. I politely asked her the price of the medium fries, she said to me, I have no idea. Seriously, I thought to myself and you work here? I obtain a carryout menu and ask what the description-less Blues burger was, with sarcasm she replies it's with bleu cheese, which is exactly what I needed clarification for. The burger was messy, indicating imitation cheese used and not good, the bun was dried out and it wasn't worth the price. There was a pile of fries but they were blah and very greasy. If we are patronizing your establishment during these trying times when people are out of jobs and losing money and we come into your establishment for a take out, I suggest you all appreciate your customers, serve great food, smile and be thankful you have people keeping your asses afloat during these trying times. Dirty ... unsanitary...rude...unwelcoming and i hate the floor being mopped for no dire reason, while food is being prepared and customers are waiting. * The original Munster location is by far more authentic and far better. 1st time coming today oct 24 2020 , seemed to be a nostalgic type place , I ordered a turkey burger , fries & root beer float . From what I can tell ground turkey was a plus not frozen the minus it lacked flavor a dash of salt , pepper and other seasoning would have brought it to life , the fries were super hot but they also lacked salt on them not to say you have to give me Hugh blood pressure but seasoning would've been nice and last but not least the to go root beer float that came separate ice cream in one cup and root beer in another I didn't know I was going to have to make it myself. Maybe under better circumstances they would be better so I'll give them another try next year as for now I would say for fresh grounded burgers they are sub par. I'd like to think of the food as light skinned or Drake .... update just grab my two cups of root beer float and to my surprise i have been saving literally a half of scoop of ice cream in a cup the ratio to root beer has to be at 1:5 it'll definitely be next year when I try place ! The food was good but the waitress barb is not for you if you are BLACK. She had something smart to say as I was waiting for a table to be cleaned off. She never once checked on me but checked on the white folks who had just walked in almost 10 minutes after me. She checked on them about 5 minutes after they order and their food came. Never went to this place before. But I was craving for a cheeseburger on the "National Burger Day". Schoops was in the walkable distance, so dropped in to get one and munch on it! They were closing in 30 minutes when I reached there and they were not dining in. Instead, they were just taking orders for take-out. They had paper menus and I quickly went through it and ordered the bacon double cheeseburger with fries. The staff were very friendly and funny. The cost of the burger was little higher than the other fast food places. It was around $12. I got my order within 5 minutes and I took the package left home and opened it up to see one damnn huge burger. I wasn't expecting to have such a gigantic burger! It was monstrous! I took half and hour to finish the burger. It was scrumptious. The beef was very well cooked and juicy. I loved it. The bacon was crispy and needless to say, their combination is mind-blowing! It's dangerous living only a few blocks away from this location. I try not to eat there TOO often, however currently being 8 months pregnant, you can imagine how this is always not possible. What can I say? I first experienced Schoop's in Chicago Heights. I was excited when purchasing my house that there was one so close. I have always been impressed and never received a bad burger or fries. The service is always great whether I'm dining in or grabbing it to go. The Green River Milkshake is amazing, and I take it up a notch by making it a malt. If you haven't tried this option, I highly recommend it. The chicken sandwich is equally as good, as well as their veggie burger! I was quite surprised when I tried the Veggie option, but every time I have ordered it, the patty was moist and delicious. Kudo's, burger gods! All in all, as long as I live here I will enjoy my Schoop's. When it's time to move, you better believe I will make sure a Schoop's is around.
