The night began at Schoop's Tinley Park location. Their credit card machine was down, thus I jumped on the expressway and headed to Munster, Indiana's Schoops! Definitely worth the 26min drive:) This place brings back all the "feels" from my childhood as I had a Schoops near my home growing up. The restaurant on the inside, still that old hamburger joint look from the 50's. And the smell, that hits you in the nose as soon as you open the door-DELICIOUSNESS! I ordered 2 Special E's: These are double cheese burgers with one piece of cheese. A double cheese: a double cheese burger with double cheese slices. 2 orders of Irish nachos(loaded cheese fries with bacon bite, fresh green onion, and ranch sauce on the side). An order of regular fries with a cheese cup. A large strawberry shake A large Coke no ice And a small Green River Shake (mine). My order was packed up nicely in a box (including the drinks). The transporting of the food and drinks home was secured by my trucks selt belt. I was determined to get the grub home with out issues. To my surprise, the food was still piping hot when we sat down to eat. The shakes were still shaking, and the fries we as yummy as I had remembered. Everything tasted great. The burgers were so huge, I couldn't take more than 3 bites. Can someone say "LEFTOVERS!!" Score! The only thing that wasn't amazing, was that my well anticipated "Green River Shake" didn't taste like Green River,nor did it look all that green. It was a nice shake, but it just tasted like vanilla. I am glad I took the drive to this location. The staff was kind, they listened to me ramble about working one summer at a Schoops near my home, and one nice employee gave me a quarter for the jukebox! So cool! Great burgers and onion rings. Can't attest to the fries. 50s/60s style diner. Route 66 vibe. I have a place in Litchfield IL near Rt 66; this place would fit right in!! Also, the prices are great!!! No overpriced $15 smash burgers here. Good food; fair prices. Service was excellent. Wish I would've ordered a Green River for nostalgia's sake. Didn't see it until too late. Support the local small businesses please!!! Just to be clear, here's my scale: It's not gourmet; but for what they offer and the price they offer it at, it's a 3+*. Service was terrible. I never got my order taken! I'm African American... walked into the Tinley park location where there were Caucasian people dining in. Their orders were already taken. They waited for the waitress to bring them their food. I'm still standing at the register to order a take out meal. She never took the order and kept her back to me the whole time, while she served others seated. Like damn! What do you have to do to place an order???? I have been coming to this location for many years.Service is the worst.i came in with my grandson to have lunch .We sat at a table and a waitress comes over after 7-8 minutes of all staff just looked at us.A waitress came over about 2 minutes later through some straws down and said waitress will be a minute.All the staff was just standing around noon one doing much of anything.We finally walked out and said out loud Thanks for the great service.Mark is the owner here and I have been coming here almost 30 + yyears.I hope everyone who reads this goes somewhere else.Crazy no one wants to work.I will let all people know when iI talk to them that. We had completed our tour of Munster High School for our fiftieth high school reunion. Before we leave town we wanted to check out a restaurant Institution from my youth. the hamburger was delicious and huge. fries were not needed but ordered. They are waiting for later. Okay, I can't say enough good things about Schoop's hamburgers and fries. I have been eating at this location in Munster since I was a grade school aged child. I know people love this place and I understand the charm. They try hard to provide that old fashion diner experience. They've been around since 1948, so they're obviously doing many things right. So I'm sorry for this review, but it's my observation and experience. The Munster store is dirty...not filthy, but not clean. This would typically be my main issue with any restaurant, but Schoop's has another practice that I find disgusting. We sat at the counter, so had a close up view of how the food is handled. The cook tosses the burger down a stainless steel counter. I saw him clean it several times, so not a good look, but not disgusting. What grossed me out was the server grabbed the burger and put it together, placing on the bun. This is the same server who just handled money. They don't use gloves or wash their hands before handling my food. I sat and drank my coke and finished my fries without touching my burger. I just couldn't touch it. This place is what Steak & Shake wants to be. My kids and I stopped here after a nearby event and we loved everything about our experience. In a word, disappointment. They change their french fries and they are terrible. Big mistake, consistency is very important in restaurants. I had the cheeseburger and it was good. My wife had the egg salad and it was dry and flavorless. They need to get the fries straight or else they're going to find themselves out of business very quickly. Some of the staff in this restaurant as well as the managers are very rude and appear to be racist. One young lady in particular who is tall with brown hair is the nastiest. When a vegetarian positively reviews a burger joint, you know it has to be good. And Schoops is good. Very good, in fact. Now, I know that some will decry the fact that Schoops does not serve up one of those monstrous 2lb belly-buster burgers with a variety of toppings. Schoops kicks it old style--thin, crispy edged burgers with your choice of basic toppings/condiments. No sauteed mushrooms here or caramelized onions here. Toss in an order of cheese fries or onion rings (my personal favorite) and you are good to go. Wait! Not so fast! I almost forgot the best part. The part that keeps me coming back to Schoops long after I gave up my omnivorous ways: The Green River. A little history: the Green River is the reportedly the second most popular soda in the midwest (behind Coke). It was named, and created, in Chicago in 1919 for the tradition of dying the Chicago River Green. If you are lucky enough to find a place that serves Green River, it is usually the bottled variety. Schoops actually serves it up fountain style--a mix of carbonated water, lime syrup, and some sort of wildly addictive mystery ingredient. And? It comes in a shake variant as well. Total freaking win. So there you have it. One of the best burgers I have ever eaten, a Green River recipe that is evidently crack-like, and a authentic retro feel (love the jukeboxes on every table) make Schoops one of my favorite places to stop. Interesting fact about myself (and Schoop's): Back in my day as a college student at Indiana University, I would come back for Christmas break in dire need of some cash. I found myself working at Howard & Son's meat market, where I ended up grinding the ground beef that was sent out to all of the Schoop's restaurants in the region. So yea, I got a first hand look at why the burgers at Schoop's taste so freaking good. And that, my friends, is a secret I will not reveal. In my mind, there are 2 types of burgers: the fat, juicy ones served with any number of gourmet toppings all piled on a robust bakery bun, or the thin and crispy burgers that should only be served with traditional toppings (cheese, mustard, ketchup, relish, etc) on a regular hamburger bun. Schoop's serves the latter, and they serve it up as good as any place I've been. Try a "Mickey" (single patty, double cheese) along with some cheese fries (they got that delicious and gooey processed cheese sauce) and you should be good to go. So, for those who care, skip those five guys from the east coast who started up a cookie-cutter burger chain, and find yourself some Schoop's--a local chain of diners that get's their meat from a local butcher shop. You can't live in NW Indiana for long without discovering Schoop's Hamburgers. My favorite is the original location on Ridge Road in Munster. It offeres a hint of vingage (individual juke boxes on the tables) and if you sit there long enough, you are bound to run into someone you know. I'm sure all the sandwiches are good but I don't know because I always order the same thing - Hamburger, old everything, no ketchup, extra onions and well done fries. For you newbies, old everything is ketchup, mustard, relish and onions. No Tomatos! No Lettuce! No Mayo! Burgers are fried crispy but not dried out. And the fries are hand cut, fresh and crunchy. They have Green River if you don't care about diet soda and keep your beverage refilled. It seems the same waitresses have been around forever. So there I was, in beauteous Lansing, IL at a friend's house and hungry. I had just arrived, even, and was hurting for some lunch in a bad way. So we started talking. I asked what my options were around the area and wasn't hearing anything particularly striking so I busted out my Motorola Droid 2™ and fired up Yelp's monocle. After the obligatory Minority Report impression and standard "zoom. enhance. zoom. enhance"s I discovered that just over the border was Schoops Hamburgers. My hosts looked at each other as then back at me. It turns out there is a rift amongst some folk about Schoops Hamburgers, namely the kind of hamburger they serve. You must understand, Schoops apparently subscribes to the flat-crispy-edge burger philosophy. None of that big bulky burger stuff here, no way. Flat as swedish pancakes and just as crisp along the edges Schoops' hamburgers make up in flavor what they lack in height. A quick sidenote: they serve water in the smallest little yellow plastic cups I've ever seen! Seriously, these things are comically small. Bigger than shot glasses but WAY smaller than people-sized glasses. Freaky, carnie-sized glasses. *shudder* So I ordered their special burger. It's two patties with cheese and their secret sauce which I didn't really taste so either it was left off or isn't so special. Didn't matter, the meat more than made up for it. Greasy, savory and with just enough charcoal taste to remind you you're a carnivore and proud of it. Along with nice crispy fries it was a great lunch. Another sidenote: They have tableside jukeboxes for $0.25 with an admirable selection of music. Takes me back to the days of Flukeys (R.I.P.) on the north side of Chicago and an awesome throwback. Schoop's is one of those places you long for when you move away from the area. It's how a burger that isn't up on it's self trying to be something it's not is suppose to taste like. You can taste the freshness of the meat and the quality of it. Not some frozen patty that been over salted and dried out. You will never complain about the size of the burger. It over flows over the bun adding a taste you rarely get other places. People have complained about the price of items here but, honestly it's less then you would get at any other sit down place. Exceptional chesseburger. The texture of the beef patty and its taste, slight buttery notes with perfectly tenderized pieces, slim but plentiful layers was beautiful. I've heard of this location's legend and it delivered in a way I could only dream of. The onion rings were also quite heavenly and the fries by themselves were quite good, but live to their potential when they were complimented quite well by my burger . The only travesty of my visit, was that I did not get a shake, totally forgot! Warm and excellent staff, cannot commend them enough, they truly carried the charm that one feels when you embrace that same charm thats in the food and the atmosphere of this timeless culinary wonder. read more
