He may not be the warm and fuzzy doctor that makes small talk, but he explains things in straight forward terms, takes care of business, then on to his next patient. Dr. Scheiner has a humorous but efficient no-nonsense approach to medicine that my family and I like. He seems to be able to recognize conditions easily and confidently, know what medication is required, and also know what pre-approvals may be required by insurers, and how to get approvals efficiently without delay. In my son's case, he excused himself to make the call for pre-approvals to the insurer while my son and I sat in his office on our first visit, which was darned impressive. My only caution with this practice, as with most others, is that you double check and be sure to fully understand when to get back to him and report your condition or its progress. Checking in more frequently is better than less. His staff is helpful and can be reached by phone fairly easily, and his location on E. 79th St is hugely convenient to many uptown residents. Check which insurers his practice uses, sadly we had to leave his practice but have decided to pay the reduced fee for uninsured patients to go back for a final check and recommendations at the end of treatment. read more

Went to Dr. Avery Scheiner for a second opinion on white spots that I've had on my arms and wow what a complete rip off and waste of time. First of all Scheiner looked like he was bothered to even be there and by my questions. He spent, at most 2 minutes looking at my arm only to tell me that there was nothing that he can do. I was literally told there is nothing that he could prescribe, couldn't tell me what the cause was, or what could be done to prevent it from worsening and that it could potentially could get worse before it gets better. Fast forward to today my arms still have the white spots and I am being charged $90 for a total of 2 minutes with this "doctor". COMPLETELY CRIMINAL. I could've gotten more information online... I will never go back and will warn anyone who even mentions this place. read more

He's both very knowledgeable and intelligent and has a great sense of humour and is able to put my concerns at ease. My fiancé had seen Dr. Scheiner previously so when I had an acne flare-up two months before our wedding, I went to see him. I have had acne for years and have tried many standard treatments so I am familiar with many treatments and also familiar with how my body and skin react to those treatments. Dr. Scheiner brushed over my past history, barely listened to my questions and brushed off my concerns with a rather abrasive manner. He quickly wrote three prescriptions which I wasn't really interested in and likely won't ever fill, told me that since I'd had acne for years I was stuck with it for many more years, and said that there was not much he could do to ensure good skin for my wedding. I still had questions and concerns about the prescriptions (I believe in understanding the effects of prescribed medications before subjecting my body to them!) but he left the room before I could even ask them. In my opinion, this was absolutely horrendous treatment of a patient who would likely have made several more visits to his office for skin treatments (chemical peels, laser resurfacing, whatever it took) prior to the wedding. I won't be going back and don't recommend that anyone else does, unless you don't care whether your doctor listens to your questions and concerns and simply dashes off a few prescriptions before really explaining them to you... read more

I will have to agree with the other reviews I just read about Dr. Scheiner. He doesn't appear to be the least bit concerned about his patients (at least not me) and is a bit rude, condescending, and has no patience, bedside manner, etc. He barely listens to you and seems like he can't wait to get out of the room. He acted annoyed with my questions and looked at me like I was stupid when I asked a very normal question, and then he just brushed me off with a short response that did not answer the question, while not even looking at me. I left there feeling a bit depressed (for lack of a better word) and insulted. No wonder he is one of the only dermatologists left who still contracts with United Healthcare. No one would go to him otherwise! read more

I had been going to this office for over 10 years, and the other doctors were very good. Then when my insurance changed, I got stuck with Dr. Scheiner. I had a mole check, a chemical peel and we discussed some very expensive laser treatments for removing sun damage. I told the doctor I couldnt afford them right now and he replied " well I hope to see you again when you have some real business for me" How rude. Needless to say I am never going back. read more

Ok, so Dr Scheiner is not talking your ear off. Who cares? The most important thing is that he knows what he is doing and that he is good at it. Yes he is serious, fast and doesn't say much and again who cares? He is the only dermatologist I have seen in NYC who was able to help me get rid of adult acne, that is all I care about. I was referred to Dr.Schiener many years ago by my internist. I have been seeing him for more than a decade. I do not know about his cosmetic skills but he does an excellent job of screening for pre-cancer and cancerous cells. He has removed may from my face by freezing and a few on my body that required minor office surgical procedures. Because he accepts all insurance and Medicare, he does not linger and have long discussions. Even though I have coverage which permits me to go anywhere, I think he is an excellent dermatologist and I have always been satisfied that he does not more than what is needed but that he also does a careful examination. If I want to be entertained I can go to a comedy club but this is a serious practice with an experienced and skilled doctor. The office is efficient and I have never waited more than 5 minutes for my appointment. read more

I agree with another reviewer that this is a serious practice. I'm sure this doctor does a great job on cosmetics but that never seemed to me to be his focus. In my visits with him, he was focused on medical issues. For that, I am grateful. Other dermatologists I've gone to shove you off on a bunch of PAs and even if you get to see the doctor, it's no more than a cursory glance. They are more interested in making zillions off cosmetic procedures. Relegating you to junior or non-doctor staff and sweeping your medical concerns under the rug does not happen here. Dr. Scheiner was always truthful, thorough and did not waste my time or his. He knows what he's doing. If it doesn't work the first time, he doesn't just give up on you. Like most busy specialists, his appointments average about 15 minutes. You ought to have your questions ready when you get there. His advice always worked for me and I wish my dumb insurance had not caused me to go elsewhere. If you want chitchat and don't have a serious skin illness, maybe you need to go to a practice where you will be seen primarily by PAs. They are more likely to engage in your desires. read more

This doctor is extremely cold and unpleasant to have to deal with. After my office visit I Informed the receptionist tthat I would not and did not pay for my co-payment , he annoyed me so much, and (she wasn't surprised ) and said "fine" (Probably no surprise there!.) . Very unprofessional manner! Does not deserve the one star. read more

Dr. Steiner seemed more concerned with delivering unfunny jokes that providing care and concern for my condition, a minor scalp rash. He smugly said he had no idea what it was, nor seemed to want to know. He suggested a OTC liquid to, I guess, diminish he scaling. Then, in the blink of an eye, was gone. He is one of the most obnoxious medical professionals I have ever encountered, with not the slightest inclination toward allaying a patient's concerns - he seems far more interesting in performing his schitick. Obviously, he does not read these reviews. But anyone considering choosing this man should. I will never see him again. read more
