If there is one place on this earth worse than hell, it's the DMV. For a little background I've…read morelived in Kansas City Kansas, Charlotte NC and most recently Austin TX and of course I've had to deal with vehicle issues in all those states. With that in mind and giving away the ending up front, Summerville DMV is the worst in many ways. First off, the people there are fairly nice so I have no issue with them however that's where the pleasantries cease. In Texas the DMV takes max 30 minutes. My 3 times at the Summerville DMV has taken an average of over 2 hours. In fact, besides Weds, they open at 8:30 am and I get there 30 minutes early to a line already wrapped around the building. That's right, 30 minutes early and you're late. Next up a small tip, before going visit the website and print/fill out all your paperwork up front. I will say this process could be sped up if this part was automated and could be finished online, but I digress. After finally getting a number, be prepared to sit or stand as seating can be limited. This will take at least another hour. The next issue I have is the state nickel and diming us everyway they can (vote wisely people). For context, a license in SC cost $25 where as TX is $10. After moving here I had to switch my plates out. Plates in TX are $20 when I moved there, here it's $350. I asked the lady, what the heck the costs are for and she explained to me: This supports freeway infrastructure (FREE way?), the plate, the county and sales tax. That is by far the most expensive I've had in the other 3 states I have lived in. Also note Texas doesn't have state income taxes..... Next up two of my visits the agents had computer crashes, in fact the last time I went the lady told me her computer crashed twice before it crashed on me, thus having to redo the process. This was another slowdown that should be addressed and considering they get so much money for services they don't provide new computers should be a no brainer. Finally, I think they have a staffing issue as they have approximately 30 stations and they're never more than 2/3 filled. In my opinion put a body at each terminal and get more people in and out quickly. Overall, I don't think it's fair for me to grade SC DMV vs other states b/c, and I'm going to be brutally honest here, SC processes and standards have always stunk (lived here before I moved to other states). But what I can judge on are inefficiencies and price gouging that occur. While there are other DMV options I feel it will be much the same so we're kind of stuck as this is what was voted for. I'm not saying anything new so I'll end up with this; I hate the SC DMV.

I looked at what I needed online, gathered my stuff and looked at wait times that they post online. The ones closer to me in North Charleston and West Ashley had long wait times posted but Mt Pleasant was like 10 minutes. Plus I'm already familiar with this location so I drove a little further to come here. I did end up waiting 20 minutes or so for my turn, put the numbers were moving quickly. When I got to the counter, the attendant was so nice and helpful... none of that cranky attitude detected anywhere. I paid my fee, got my new photo and had a new ID in 30 minutes total.

I went just as lunch was over on a Friday and was in & out in 38 minutes. So I can't complain too much... CONS: I doubt any were sitting in the lobby, but it wasn't as customer friendly as I would have expected when the goal is to collect taxes. PROS: I think just about everyone employed there is one.

With plenty of parking, then a quick stop for a security check, service offices are just a turn down the hall. Of course, there's always a wait at the DMV; however, across the hall at the Auditorium/Treasurer, there's never a wait, in fact, there's rarely a line. The employers are all pleasant and I'm walking out with receipt in hand in under two minutes.

I had a request that they hadn't seen before so it took them a little bit of time to research it. Then I paid for license renewal fee, got my photo taken and got my updated driver's license. I was out the door 45 minutes after I had entered the DMV. Very nice people! Everyone was friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere was casual and relaxing. No tension! The last time I was at a motor vehicle dept was in Brooklyn, New York and it was the total opposite and it was an all day affair.

The last two times have been for my daughter's permit and the staff was quick and efficient in helping us through the process of the knowledge test, paperwork and then, most recently, a renewal. The fees for a permit are very inexpensive ($2.50) so can't complain about that.

Upon entry you speak to person in booth that issues a paper ticket number like a deli. The numbers are different based on what service you say have come for. There is a large seated waiting area where you fill out form given with provided clipboard/pens lined on wall. Numbers are announced over loud speaker and displayed on TV screens throughout listing up to 6 numbers. There are around 6-7 active counter windows distributing the service varieties. I find the wait during weekday mornings to be between 15-20 minutes before get to a window. I would not count on short wait times in afternoon close to end of day as I've witnessed the line out the door just to get the paper ticket. The employees at windows are jovial as can be considering it is the DMV, I have not had a bad experience. One negative beside occasional long waits is sometimes they will direct you to stand and wait. I do not think the ticket system has always been used here but the implementation has been a big plus.
