Berlin Fair - Street corn so good

This is our fall treat. Every year we are looking for fair season and Berlin Fairgrounds its on the…read morelist. They have convenient parking close by but for those that can not find parking they also provide shuttle service to and from the fairgrounds . We took the shuttle from Eversource. Its seems like every year this fair its getting bigger and bigger. With a buzz of people and an enormous amount of food and activities to do. THE FOOD oh my, the food , so many vendor to pick from its hard to decide. We are A LOT, street corn from Mexican vendors, grinders from church tents, and of course we can't forget the expected fried dough. I also noticed the decrease of animal activity, it seems like more comercial than a fair animal experience itself. And at night its so exciting to see the rides illuminated and music playing loud for everyone to hear. A lot of happy memories.

The different livestock, and the cute little chicks being hatched are one of my favorite things The carnival area is great for kids, which I don't have so personally I don't venture to this area often as it is a little wild, especially on the weekend Thursday is the best day to go because of demo Derby however it's a few hours long and being opening day you don't get much time at the fair. I would suggest going on a Friday as well to experience the full fair.

    La Festa ItaliAmerica

    La Festa ItaliAmerica

"Hey, mambo, mambo italiano Go, go, go you mixed up…read moresiciliano All you calabresi do the mambo" (Dean Martin) Who doesn't love Italian food? I'm sure there are some poor souls out there who don't like tomato sauce and mozzarella and pasta and canolis. They have my sympathy. Today, we attended the First Annual La Festa ItaliAmerica celebration in Elm Ridge Park in Rocky Hill. It showcased Italian heritage, history, music, art, and, of course, food. Local TV celebrity Dennis House was the Master of Ceremonies, and it was pretty cool when he introduced a young lady wearing a gown and opera gloves to sing the Italian national anthem. There was a speaker who led dozens of dive teams to the wreck of the Andrea Doria. Ever hear of it? The Andrea Doria was a 700 foot long ocean liner that was sailing from Italy to NYC on July 17, 1956. They had over 1,100 passengers onboard. Off the shore of Nantucket, it collided with another ship, and 46 of its passengers perished. One of today's speakers was a survivor of the disaster, and she rang the Doria's bell that had been salvaged by the diver. The bell and one of the Doria's lifeboats were on display at the festival. Another historical segment was a display on Italian migration to Hartford between 1870 and 2000. It was horrible reading some of the racist newspaper articles about the "wave" of Italian immigrants. Oh yeah, there was food, too. The Casa Mia Restaurant Grouph had a busy booth selling huge meatballs, porchetta sandwiches, pasta e fagioli, and arancini rice and meat balls. All were $8. Modern Pastry was there with baked goods, there was a gelato booth, a food truck from Square Peg Pizza, and a booth sponsored by UNICO National selling $3 hot dogs, $5 burgers, and $7 sausage and pepper grinders. We both had a giant meatball for lunch. It was served with a dinner roll and a sprinkling of parmesan sauce. The meatball was as big as a baseball and was great. We bought pizza and a sausage and pepper grinder to take home for dinner. For their first annual celebration, it sure looked like a successful event to me. I do recommend they increase the tables and chair seating under the tent because when we were ready to sit down, there were no seats available.

Old Cider Mill - Apple fritter

When looking up fall activities to due with kids, Old Cider Mill popped up in multiple…read morerecommendations on social and on the web. Folks it isn't just another farm where you can snag a pumpkin. Old Cider Mill is one of the OLDEST operating cider mill in the U.S. Yes, in the entire U.S, opening operations in the 1870s. This cider mill is situated on a cute little farm called Riverview Farms. Its important to know that if you are looking for a large farm where you can all day "pick your own", corn mazes, and more, this place isn't it. But I found this place a cute destination that has a few things to do with my toddler for 1-2 hrs. When you pull in to the farm, the old building is literally the first thing you see from the road with gords, pumpkins, apples and more spread out to purchase. Very similar to an open layout farmers market. A lot of the fruits they have for purchase aren't grown by them but are locally grown from the Glastonbury area. The parking is up the side and in the back. There is plenty of parking. Parking is on a wide dirt road with pull in parking on the left and right. I had no issues getting in and leaving. They make FRESH apple fritters and of course apple cider. I got hot apple cider from the food truck they have but id recommend just buying their cold apple cider inside the barn (if you dont want it warm) and BYOC to drink it with the apple fritters from the truck. For me, I wish I did because my daughter did better with drink it from a sippy cup. Where you will spend the bulk of your time and which I thoroughly enjoyed was the petting zoo. The cost to get a cup of animal feed is only a $1 or $2. They also give you a feeding stick to put the feed on so your children do not need to put their hands near the animals mouths. You will NEED cash to do this activity since its so cheap. You can pay at the entrance of petting zoo. If you dont have cash, you can still get tickets/tokens (dont remember what it was) inside their general store found inside the old barn building in the front but you need to purchase other stuff (I think there was a card minimum). There was no ATMs. I planned to purchase homemade stuff inside the store anyways. The petting zoo has all your standard farm animals (chickens, roosters, sheep, goats and more). There is plenty of space inside to move around, so even if its busy, you wont have to wait to feed the animals. The general store is bigger than it looks from the outside as they have like half level room (kind of like a basement that you can go down into with old gift shop stuff). They have hand made crafts, nice decorative stuff, locally made dressings, jams, picked stuff, salsa, and of course, apple based products like donuts (made at another farm), apple cider and more. I'd go here again if I'm on the area as its an easy and cute place to bring your children for a quick 1-2 hrs if you don't want or can invest an entire day to a fall activity. Check out of your Connecticut historical destinations and visit Old Cider Mill.

The Old Cider Mill is one of those old historical places located in South Glastonbury"been there…read moreforever" which I actually was able to go to back in my grammar school days 50 years ago with my brownie troop to see the actual cider mill press in operation, making fresh apple cider. It's no longer in operation and now the apple cider is brought in from Riverview Farms and sold alongside the famous apple fritters which is not the same. Also there is huge displays of pumpkins of all shapes and sizes along with white pumpkins and gourds available and sold along with scare crows and corn stacks. They draw in a huge crowds on weekends and warned that in addition to the throngs of people clamoring for their Fall fix and Autumn photo opportunity. The traffic congestion goes along with the location. A lot of out of state cars of visitors that come on the weekends for the month of October. Don't be turned off as it's a great place to visit.

The Water Lantern Festival would've been a magical night had it not had a downpour. Then again, looking at it at a different perspective, it could've been a cleansing too. The event opened at 4:30p and was set to end at 8:30p. We managed to walk around and check out the vendors and then the food trucks. Sadly Cousins Maine was shut down. I was really looking forward to trying them out. The lines for each food truck after that was incredibly long. Expect about 20-30min wait time to order. I was able to set up a couple folding chairs on a mat by the water which was great. Right before six, the weather forecast took a turn so on my way back to the car, it started to pour heavily. By the time I returned my youngest at 6 years old was crying and cold and we were forced to make a decision to leave. I saw on the Facebook page that the launch will continue as planned. No plans of delaying which was such a bummer. Luckily I didn't live all too far and was able to go home, change and come back and enjoy the festival with 10 minutes to spare. Forget about the food we bought that was all drenched and tossed. I wish that the festival could have reschedule since this event signifies someone's wish, prayer and hopes. After all, wasn't it created for that purpose?

I liked the bracelets, blanket, cards and lanterns provided at the checkpoint in the cute drawstring bag. The food trucks choices were great. We ended up going with chicken tenders, fries and mini donuts! Delicious! The best experience was when we launched our lanterns while listening to the very appropriate music! Very hard to explain but you definitely have to experience! I would recommend this event to everyone and looking forward to attend again!
