We had a fantastic time at the fair this year. It's definitely best to go on a weekday to avoid the crowds but on the weekend they have convenient shuttles. So many food vendors and the rides were excellent. We never miss the demo derby and many show attractions. May go a second time this weekend.

I have such great memories of the Berlin Fair as a teen and this past Sunday when I woke up, I knew I had to make my way there. The weather was beautiful- 73 degrees. Sunny, cool breeze. How could you not go to a fair only ten minutes from where you live? They had shuttle service from Eversource and it took just a few minutes to get dropped off. Sunday at 9:30 AM is the best time to get there. I had the fair ground to myself practically. Had a great time snapping some pics, checking out vendor goods and figuring out my food plan of action. When I walked past the Kensington Methodist Church Hall, they had hot chicken on the grill outside and you could smell how delicious it was from a mile away. I knew that would be my spot. Had I not had time to walk around before the crowds filled in, I never would have known it was there after all the years I had come in the past. Before that though, I started with the classic Loaded Baked Potato. Always a must to get at the Berlin Fair! It did not disappoint. Check out the photos and video I posted. That made for a great breakfast! First meal of the day. My next stop was for the bbq chicken and there, I also got some pierogies with grilled onion. I was fully embracing all things potato that morning. The chicken was unbelievably juicy and delicious. On my way out I grabbed a few items to go- a caramel and a candy apple, a fried dough with powdered sugar and a medium sized kettle corn. I had to leave with a few edible souvenirs lol I hopped back on the shuttle and was back home by 12:30 PM. The crowd was picking up when I left. I really had a great experience going so early and I will definitely do that again in the future. Can't wait to return next year!

This fair is smaller than the Durham fair but not by much. They make Beckley road a one-way that you have to enter from the Berlin Turnpike. There are paid lots for $10. Or a bus option that probably picks you up from a large lot elsewhere. I haven't tried that yet. The fried dough from the yellow Lions Club building was good. Also the sweet potato fries from a permanent structure in the center of the fair were tasty. The lobster bisque for $5 was a rip off. More like a minced seafood chowder. There is a large pine Pavillion that houses fried vegetables and most of the beer vendors. You're supposed to get a green wrist bracelet from the security guard who verifies your ID. The vendors will mostly not require it if you look like your in your 30s. The ID was longer and slower than the actual place you wait to buy drinks. They did sell decent wine; red and white by the cup for $5.

As far as local fairs go, this is bigger than most and seems great for kids -- it's got a petting zoo, rides, typical fair food, and lots of toys and junky souvenir type things for sale. It was fun to walk around for half an hour or so, but wasn't really up my alley for anything more than that. Though they do have some of the typical harvest fair entertainment in the way of tractor pulls and agricultural contests (produce, rabbits/chickens, baked goods and such). Parking wasn't as much of a hassle as I anticipated, and $12 for admission didn't seem worth it but I'm sure this is expensive to put on.

The event was packed! I had apple cider margarita at a booth with live music. Also, I had apple crisp with vanilla ice cream from a church; both items were good! My family had a fun time at this traditional event and glad to have checked it off our list.

Local love at this fantastic annual arts and crafts festival!!…read more The Avon Arts Association creates and runs a perfect festival, set in the upper parking area (between two separate [but connected] lots) in between the small businesses in Old Avon Village. It is very easy to ambulate (and thus wheelchair accessible, which is hard to find in local festivals and farmers markets)!! The festival is very well advertised, with huge stand-up signs along the roads near the main streets of Avon and colorful flags and balloons bordering the entrance to the lots. You are led the way in!! You are able to see a number of local artists and their showcase works. From woodwork to jewelry to hand-dyed tie-dye to photography to paintings, you will see a little of everything here. I was really impressed by the number of vendors here!! I saw the talent and passion with each vendor as I passed through. It is really fun to see the excitement vendors have when they show their work. I was able to interact with the vendors, too, and chatted with a few about their items. Each vendor--including the shop owners at the antique shop that is in the center of the festival--was incredibly kind and, again, very passionate. I purchased a beautiful and unique ring at Two Birds Jewelers (opening a storefront in Ashford soon) and gorgeous tie-dye scarf and t-shirt from Deena's DDJ Designs ("tie-dyed clothing with a heart and a twist"). I spoke with the jeweler who crafted my ring and learned about the stone and setting; then I later chatted with Deena who made my tie-dyed pieces and who told me how to care for my funky one-of-a-kind wardrobe items. I really enjoyed strolling through, seeing local artists and their talents. There really is nothing like seeing local artists showcase their work and their passion. The only problem with this festival is the parking. There are small and windy roads in this village's parking, so it can be tricky to navigate to find a space in the limited number of spaces it has. You may want to go early--though you may want to anyway to miss the crowds and see the items showcased by each vendor more closely before anyone else--to grab a close parking spot. When I went mid-morning, I lucked out by grabbing a space down a flight of stairs from the center of the festival. I saw others though parking in the lower lots behind the larger complex and walking uphill to the tents. Overall, I very much like the smooth and accessible space this festival is set in, so it is worth the walk. There were a considerable number of people there when I went, but the festival is perfectly spread out so foot-traffic is not an issue. If you are not able to make one day, do not worry--this festival is open two days. Even if arts and crafts are not your thing, definitely stop by. You will see the local talent and may get a free sample of ice cream!! Why not support local every chance you can?

It's all indoors and warm, which is a plus for New England winters, but personally I'd rather find local outdoor light displays instead. For the lights themselves, the standout for most kids was probably the hanging "icicle" garden -- rows of lights you can walk through, which seemed to get the biggest reaction. Do it early enough next year, and you may even get a decent shot or two in time for your Shutterfly or equivalent Christmas card. The snack options were fine, and there's alcohol for adults, though some things are a bit on the expensive side. You'll probably also end up giving in to some of the add-ons -- glowing cups, light-up wands, or similar extras -- so your kid isn't the only one without one. (Maybe prepare yourself with a preemptive "OK, but just ONE.") The self-stamped passport activity was a nice touch, and the PEZ dispenser prize at the end was a cute detail. All in all, it's an OK experience and a nice family option if you take advantage of everything inside. I'd call it 3.5 stars -- fun to do once, but probably not something I'd make a yearly tradition.

"Morning glow, filled with light You can make the whole day…read morebright" (Michael Jackson) Glow is a family-friendly indoor winter festival of lights currently open in five Canadian cities, Eugene Oregon, and good old Hartford, CT. It was a beautiful display of color and design, highlighted by plenty of dazzling lights in the shape of iconic landmarks from around the world. If you ever hoped to see Christmas lights in the shape of the London Eye, Eiffel Tower, Asian temples, Taj Mahal, the Louvre, and London Bridge... well you'll be amazed at the images you see here. Complementing the visuals are bars, rides, food, photo ops with Santa and the Grinch, live music, and a vendor trade show. Plenty of kiddie activities too - a bounce house, train ride, glowing swing sets, and games. We saw quite a few families with kids of all ages, including a lot of strollers enjoying the show and taking advantage of the hundreds of photo ops. No doubt many of the pics will end up on next year's Christmas cards. All in all, this was a very enjoyable experience.

Q3: -What food truck had the most provocative double entendre of a name? A3: - Just The Tip (steak Tips) The Farmington Food Fest was a blast! It was in an office park that was empty today, and there was a ton of parking with lot attendants to keep everything running smoothly. There was a big crowd, but the grounds were so spread out and there were so many food trucks we never really felt crowded in. We walked around the place a few times to get the lay of the land, see what trucks were there, and plan out our strategy for the day. We both went to the Tots Hots & Brats truck for a hot dog and a red hot .My Red Hot was excellent -big juicy with onions and peppers on a soft roll. I loved it. Dessert was an easy choice as we made a mutual beeline for the Shaved Ice truck. It was a different kind of shaved ice because you applied your own syrup to your personal mountain of shaved ice. The Food Fest was operated by USA Festivals out of Fort Myers, FL and they have a niche in organizing these events across the country. They sure did a great job with this one. Only negative is that it's just a 2-day affair -Saturday June 26 and Sunday June 27. So tomorrow's your last chance.

The Water Lantern Festival would've been a magical night had it not had a downpour. Then again, looking at it at a different perspective, it could've been a cleansing too. The event opened at 4:30p and was set to end at 8:30p. We managed to walk around and check out the vendors and then the food trucks. Sadly Cousins Maine was shut down. I was really looking forward to trying them out. The lines for each food truck after that was incredibly long. Expect about 20-30min wait time to order. I was able to set up a couple folding chairs on a mat by the water which was great. Right before six, the weather forecast took a turn so on my way back to the car, it started to pour heavily. By the time I returned my youngest at 6 years old was crying and cold and we were forced to make a decision to leave. I saw on the Facebook page that the launch will continue as planned. No plans of delaying which was such a bummer. Luckily I didn't live all too far and was able to go home, change and come back and enjoy the festival with 10 minutes to spare. Forget about the food we bought that was all drenched and tossed. I wish that the festival could have reschedule since this event signifies someone's wish, prayer and hopes.
