Loved the place very small and quaint. Wasn't too busy when we walked in on a Sunday morning. Order at the register and they bring it to your table. Service was very fast for such a small place. Everyone was friendly too. Have to bus own table too. Got the cinnamon toast special it was so delicious with a side of bacon. I cleaned the plate ! Really wonderful cafe with a local vibe and GREAT food. Can be very crowded depending upon the time, but lots of seating inside and out. It was the only coffee place close to us and we hit it five straight days during our week in Mt Vernon. Seemed more of a breakfast place than coffee place as coffee was self served from some pump and wasn't anything special. The customer service was pretty poor too. The employees seemed indifferent that we were there and in the last day the guy with a beard and tattoos was downright rude. Anyway no found memories of this place and a worthy competitor in the area would likely take them out. read more

This place would benefit from a first come first serve seating system, instead it's a free for all with a line snaking through the poorly laid out interior space and patrons dragging chairs and tables to cobble together seating for their large parties at the expense of the rest of us. We tried to come for breakfast but ended up getting a disappointing meal to go. Food was tolerable but VERY pricey for what it was. Baked goods were great, breakfast platters and soup to go were actively unpalatable. Would not repeat. Perhaps we just hit the high summer rush but it was a real mess. read more

Driving up to the building I knew this was going to be the perfect place. The outfoor and indoor space was so comforing and inviting. The staff was very friendly and took note that it was our first time there. We sat in a little corner off to the side so we could have a great view of the lake. My husband had the smoked ham with chuttney and I had the Lox bagel. Even though it was hard to "bite into" my sandwhich to keep it from falling apart, it was SO good! The ambiance is cute, it definitely nails the small-town cafe vibe. Which makes sense, as that's what it is. Instead of resting on their laurels and offering bland staples, the menu is interesting and unique, yet still comfortably familiar. My turkey club had a rosemary mayo which was amazing! I had the Rueben 18.00. Homemade bread was great and it was tasty. Although, it was not an 18.00 sandwich. It was a thin layer of slightly gristled pastrami. Top it off they put mustard on it??? The homemade bread & pastry looked amazing. This hidden gem is worth the drive for breakfast, lunch, or stocking up bakery items. There was a short list of nice breakfasts as simple as bacon and eggs or yoghurt, to a wonderful BLT with egg sandwich and the best corned beef hash I have ever had (and I have had a lot). We took a sausage, ham and onion quiche home with us and it was so rich and the crust was wonderful. Their cookies and brownies and pastries looked terrific and there was a big variety. There was also a good selection of sandwiches for lunch. The seating was very clean in a cute atmosphere looking over the lake, and there was a porch and seating outside too. Coffee and water are serve yourself as are all the condiments. The staff were delightful! What a wonderful place. read more

My wife and I enjoyed a delicious lunch on the lawn next to the water. My steak sandwich on an everything bagel was perfect and the slaw was unique and flavorful. Counter service is always friendly and prompt. We were fortunate to have beautiful weather and secured a comfortable seat by the water. We'll definitely return to Scapes Cafe. read more

This is probably the first non Diet Coke place ever that I have become a regular. I can't express how grateful I am to this little gem for coming to Mount Vernon- this is the only eating establishment in the town and how lucky are we that it has the best breakfast burrito I have ever had?!?! I've already thought about what a lifeline this will be to the community in the depths of winter because yes, it's open year round!!! The service is wonderful and usually quick. It's counter service, though they bring your plate to you. I am not a coffee person but my partner absolutely loves their Speckled Ax coffee. You can buy frozen meals, soups, and a robust amount of bakery dishes. The savory scones are always amazing and unique. I am trying to order something different each time but it's really hard for me to pass on the breakfast burrito and Cuban sandwich (with homemade zuchinni pickles!). We also recently discovered they make their own hot sauces, in a cabinet near the water spigot. Ambiance is warm and welcoming (Dan says you can also taste the love in their cooking) and when departing I always feel like I'm part of the community. People on job sites stop in for work, and then lots of community regulars. Parking isn't the easiest but since there's no other businesses downtown besides the post office, it's not hard. The new owners done an amazing job decorating and the food selections are so good. You have all the fresh baked goodies as well as a full cafe menu including daily quiches, soups and what seems to be all freshly sourced ingredients. This spot has gone through a few incarnations and the current owners have reached close to perfection. The look and feel of the place is very positive, upbeat, and inviting. But they didn't stop there. The staff are cheerful and efficient. Even with a big crowd there is very little waiting. And even if there was a bit of a wait it is so worth it because the food is extremely high quality, fresh, and well presented. Nice variety on the menu with lots of pastries to back it up. Wonderful atmosphere with water views. Prices are reasonable especially considering the large portions. One of the best restaurants I've eaten at, small town or big. read more
