I'm sure they do that because they are probably the only burger place in town. Home cooked burgers are WAY better than what they serve. The fries are decent. Customer service was not friendly. The lady acted like she hated her job. I don't mind the outdoor picnic tables, but the umbrella over the table kept falling over and almost landing on us. Stopped in to give the burger and onion rings and try. LOVED my burger (the Overload) but at over $6 it was about $1.25 overpriced. Although the onion rings weren't greasy they definitely tasted like the 25-lb bags of frozen breaded throw-em-in-the-deepfryer onion rings and they were overpriced as well. The staff is always friendly and efficient, our burgers are hot and fresh with plenty of melty gooey cheese and crispy bacon on them, and we are never hungry when we leave. This used to be a childhood favorite, but after the service I received today I'll never go back there again. They seemed upset I came to the window while they were sitting in the back. The first thing the young lady said to me is "you can't have your dog inside these tires, just so you know" (my dog was on a leash and you walk up to the front of the building outside for crying out loud!) I was unaware they only accept cash so I went back to my car to grab cash instead of my card and seen them come out as I put my dog away to see if they went to the bathroom inside of the tires (He didn't). Good burger and the price was about what you should expect from a little burger shake in the middle of nowhere. Well after a long hike up Mt. Rainier today on September 1st 2014 I stopped by Elbe because I was very hungry. So I came to Scaleburgers and ordered The Overload which was awesome! PLUS a lemonade to wash it down. It was definitely a delicious burger! It was a little over $6 and the Lemonade was about $3 plus tax of course so $9 total for a good meal. Being from California I was actually surprised as I love food and have great taste. I would definitely come back here when I go to Mt. Rainier again. Not a bad burger coming out of a tiny kitchen in a small town. We used to have a restaurant in the early 80's and one thing we learned is that it is impossible to please everyone's taste in food. Our burgers were a lot cheaper, but so was everything else 40 years ago! Stopped by this roadside burger joint on the way to a cabin weekend in Mt. Rainier. Very leery, at first, from the appearance of this little shack. The place was packed with fellow fourth of July travelers. Burgers were amazing!!! Their "special sauce" is very much like In N Out's sauce. Small menu, consisting of burgers, corn dogs, fries, onion rings, and shakes, but they have perfected these burgers!! Our entire group of ten was pleasantly surprised. Old lady with pigtails was a piece of work, didn't say hello or greet her customers, and bit my head off for asking if I could sub a different kind of cheese. While driving to Mount Rainier this weekend, we passed by this place and my burger-dar started pinging like crazy. Luckily we got a chance to stop by for lunch on our way home and I was right! So refreshing to know that there are still some places that know how to make a classic burger. Reminded me of Scott's Dairy Freeze in North Bend, which is quite a compliment, I assure you. I wanted to give five stars, but personally that seemed like an exaggeration for a burger shack. Cash only, picnic seating, Pepsi products (not to worry, I had a Coke in the car), and steak fries, which were VERY good, despite my preference for shoestring. My family spent 2 days visiting Mt Rainier and stopped both days for burgers and milkshakes. The Overload Burger (1/3 lb patty, 2 slices of American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, special sauce and 2 pieces of delicious thick cut bacon) was one of our all time favorite burgers. The ingredients were fresh and flavorful. Everything was made to order (10-15 min wait). Our shakes were made with fresh produce - so good!! The picnic tables (some with umbrellas) provide ample seating. The staff was very friendly and we happily chatted about our road trip. A simple roadside place with great food! read more

Purposely drove past many other dining choices on my way to Big Creek Campground on a Friday evening. It is a shed with several (key word) "outdoor" picnic tables set up in a gravel parking lot. I was told they don't allow dogs in the eating area and to leave her in the hot car in the sun. WTF???? It's a gravel parking lot with picnic tables, so there would be no health code regulations being violated. There was a significantly higher biohazard health risk from the tables with small chidren with poopy diapers than my 12 pound dog would have posed. I could understand if it was an indoor dining area, or even perhaps if the tables were under cover, but they were even sufficiently far away from the shack that if one chose to, one could light up a cigar or cigarette and be within the bounds of Washington's smoking ban. If you love your dog, don't eat here. read more

I am dumbfounded that anyone gave this shed more than one stars. Maybe they are really employees? I only gave it one star because Yelp won't let you go any lower. First of all the burgers are like 6 dollars, my boyfriend choose this place on the way to Mt. Rainer to go to on the way back because it look cheap fast and great eats NO! on all three. Reading the other reviews the only other thing I can think of is that we must have been ripped off and if the manager is reading this, then he/she needs to talk to his/her employee because we got cheese on ours, the cheese being the standard American sliced cheese square you get in the package at Safeway, and it was thicker than the patty! No lie!! Not to mention when we went there, their was only one other couple who were already eating and it took like 20mins to cook. It was absolutely delicious but we had also just spent the day in the park hiking in the high altitude so maybe like the other reviewers we were just light headed. Next time we are there we are definitely hitting the bar/grill a few feet away. Especially, since just because they only specialize in cooking razor thin patty REALLY slow there is no reason not to go to the grill since we thought it would be better and faster. The bar/grill looks more local and I bet you the outside of the bar looks really sleazy because it is owned by the same people and it is just a ruse to serve the locals at normal prices and get tourist to pay more. Scale Burgers is only open during "Tourist" season which opens Memorial Day weekend and I believe they close Labor Day weekend as well. They are a small burger joint owned and run by locals. They have outdoor picnic table seating. There is no cell phone service in Elbe and most of the region. So yes, you will have to be "unplugged" and enjoy the people & scenery that surrounds you just like the good old days. I always get the Cheese Burger and fries and they are super yummy. Burgers aren't your thing? Then check out the Pizza place across the street or the Train restaurant. Or grab a cup of Coffee at Jackie's Java and a muffin but you are missing out if you don't try Scale Burgers at least once! read more

Don't quite understand all the good reviews. Average/mediocre food for a high price. 2 adults one child has lunch for $48. That is a lot more than I usually would pay. We ordered: 2 burgers, which were okay. Thin patties, but tasted fine. 3 fries, which are like steak fries which we did not finish. Not crisp enough but ok. 1 order chicken nuggets which my child liked 3 shakes, not a fan of these. Too runny, almost warm. Huckleberry had ok flavor. Chocolate was very mild flavor. Peanut butter was ok. No one finished theirs, just not that great. 2 waters for 25 cents each something they called "Goop" which was mayo and relish but cost $1 each. Meh. Won't go again. read more
