I found Eva's contact information on the Berkeley Parent's Network and even though I'm not a parent myself, I find that they have pretty trustworthy reviews. Sure enough, Eva and her team were patient and able to help me figure out what I needed to file, how to fill it out and of course, how to save more money! What I liked best was Eva's smart, no-nonsense approach. She was explaining things to me so I not only understood what she was doing and why, but after I felt as if I might be able to tackle my taxes myself next year. PLUS, I was able to do everything online. SO convenient. You can see her in person if you want, but being able to do it online and over the phone just saved me so much time. We went to her after our previously faithful turbox led to us getting walloped with an unexpectedly huge tax bill following a job change last year. She was very respectful in her manners. Not demanding information from us, but politely asking us questions that in the end led to her reducing our tax bill by a quarter! Also, I'd called all the places reviewed on Yelp in the area and she was definitely the most upfront about her costs (actually gives you an hourly rate which was way lower than the few other people that did this). She even spent time on the phone when we called first to check her out deciding whether it was even worth us trying to come in or if we'd done it correctly already using turbo tax. No one else did this and we appreciated her honesty. In terms of the earlier review about security, she now uses an encrypted file sharing program and asks if you first if this OK. read more

I have entrusted Eva Konigsberg / Savvy Tax for several years to file my tax return and I enthusiastically recommend her with all the bells and whistles, can you hear it?! As a single mom of 5 children, with a home business, my tax return is complicated and very detailed. Okay, so I was a tax zombie. I trudge to those H&R guys or the place with some chump dressed as Lady Liberty hanging out in front. I'd give them my W2, they'd grunt and hand me the bill which I'd dutifully pay. Then I heard about Eva at Savvytax. I was a bit leery at first; I didn't think there would be much she could do with a personal return, and her rates were a bit higher than I was used to. But by the end of our first meeting, she found me a half-dozen ways to save, and convinced me that my "sideline" was not a hobby but a business! I went through two tax accountants before a friend recommended Eva. What a relief. I'm self-employed, running two business, plus have money overseas; so not a simple return. But once I've gone through her worksheet (which she sends out January 1st), in one ninety-minute session at her office we get everything done, including ways to save thousands in taxes. I just started my own consulting business, and am really happy with the way Eva worked with me on both my taxes as well as setting up my books. I found her to be very encouraging and supportive, as well as professional. She offers the option of either meeting her at her home office or over the phone. Her rates are reasonable and she is very flexible with appointments- she is usually very accommodating of last minute changes and re-schedules. I appreciated her templates and newsletters to help me get up to speed on what I needed to do and what to track. I called several other accountants recommended by friends and never heard from several, and got cryptic information from others. A mixed experience. I called and explained I would like advice on topics X and Y. Eva said she'd be happy to talk about those. It was a quick phone call (she mentioned she was about to see another client, or was with another client, I'm not sure which), so maybe some of what later went wrong was due to that. Made an appointment for my partner and I to see her the next day. Very irritating: Eva said during the phone call that she would email me directions to her office. I didn't see why, as there is an address on her website, perfectly easy to find, but she promised to send directions. Well, she didn't send directions, and it turns out the address on the website is the P.O. Box. So I called, got directions to her home office. We got to her house half an hour after the appointment time. Had she sent directions as promised, the trip would have taken us 15 minutes. As it was, it took well over 45 minutes of our time (driving to the wrong place, parking, getting directions, getting back on the freeway, finally getting to her house). Eva was very apologetic about failing to send the directions when we got there, but also kept saying that it didn't matter at all that we got there late, she still had time to talk to us. Not a hint of an acknowledgment that our time might be worth something to us (not to mention the fact that we had to be somewhere after that appointment). Eva clearly regarded our time as a commodity that was hers to spend, - in fact, to add insult to injury, we got to pay for her apologizing, at $180 an hour. Also somewhat disappointing: During the appointment, Eva gave us some useful information on topic X, but whenever topic Y came up, she said Y was outside of her area of expertise. Maybe it's impossible to find a professional who can cover X and Y, but I regret not probing this further during the initial phone call. When we first got in the car to see her, we thought we might ask this person to do our and our parents' taxes in the future. I don't think so. read more
