I know it is late to be trying to get help with 2025 tax return, so I asked to have an extension filed so I could have until October. I always over pay my taxes so there is no issue with owing the IRS. Obviously, I was fine with paying a retainer, but the brick wall person on the phone refused to connect me to a voicemail so I could simply leave a message. The person on the phone said I would not be able to get an extension filed with any of their staff and would not be allowed to leave a message for a tax professional. Apparently, the brick wall picking up the phone does not want the firm to have any more business for the rest of the tax season. Oh well, glad you all are doing so well that you turn away a client who will give you money now and in the fall when business is slow. read more

As you can see, my current motto is "Can't I pay someone to do that?" which applies to just about everything, but becomes especially crucial during tax season. I wanted to find a tax genie who could magically make all my tax fears disappear. Or, more specifically, transform my pile of paperwork into a pile of cash. Oh, and they should also be very intelligent and experienced. That's not too much to ask, right? After some Yelp research, I decided that KeAloha couch had the most genie potential. I set up an appointment just 2 weeks before the big, scary tax deadline and they got me in no problem. I was impressed by all the communication leading up to, and following my appointment. First they emailed me some paperwork I needed to fill out before my meeting (which, in hindsight, I should have filled out more thoroughly). I am accustomed to sitting down with someone and working line-by-line on my taxes, H&R block style, but the Couch folks do all the dirty work for you, behind the scenes. You just need to drop off that tax packet they send you, have a quick 20 minute meeting with your tax specialist, and a couple weeks later, they've got all your paperwork done and your refund amount calculated. Pretty magical stuff. KeAloha must be the most energetic, funny, and unboring tax professional in the world. I wanted to go have drinks with her after our meeting, she is that fun to be around. She gave me some tips for next year's taxes, and suggested I file for an extension, as those tend to be audited less than the normal deadline returns. Good to know! This is a professional agency, so their prices are indeed higher than your drive-thru tax shops. I think I paid around $450 for my returns (which were complicated - involving a rental property in Georgia). BUT...my refund amount was higher than ever, by about 30%, so all in all, totally worth the extra expense and minimal hassle. I didn't have a great experience with Kealoha. I was tired of doing my own taxes and figured it was time a professional took a look at them anyway, (TurboTax being a bot and all), so I came in and we had a great first meeting. After that, it was downhill. KeAloha was impatient and condescending and generally not great at communicating. Maybe she's better for people who are super intimidated by taxes and just hand everything over without question because it felt like every interaction was "more in sorrow than in anger." Sorry I am such a disappointment, Mom- thank god you're here to the rescue! LOL. On top of that, she's not particularly cheap for what was a pretty simple return. I don't mind paying people for their work, but they don't get to act like it's a favor and a nuisance. The icing on the cake was that she was brusque and condescending to her staff. As a lifer staff person myself, I hate to watch that. So I'm going back to doing my own taxes for the moment. Too bad- I like the location and I like the folks I interacted with who work for her, and we DID have that great first meeting. Starting with their inflated hourly rates, hidden cost, rising annual cost, and cold responses to questions and concerns - this place isn't somewhere you want to conduct your business...we have consistently given this group the opportunity after opportunity to prove they were worth the investment and always left questioning why we do business with these folks. We always thought they were over priced but thought, "well we are paying for top tier talent to get us the best returns"...and now that we are at the point where their rates are just too high ($250hr!), they don't produce grand returns, and they push back more than any "service" based company I've ever employed...and just a disappointment. Depending on what you value in those who you do business with...I would reconsider here. I just called this company to try to find an accountant for my company (C-corp, we've grown to the point where I think we need better advice), and the woman who answered the phone appeared to think I was trying to get free advice on the phone. She refused to have a principal call me back to see if it would be a good fit, and emphasized that I could come in to talk but that it would be 'only ten minutes, after that they start to charge.' I don't have a lot of experience with tax preparers. Up until this year I've always done it online and it's been pretty simple. Last year however, I got domestic partnered to the love of my life and bought a house. Then I realized that since the Feds don't recognize my relationship that things were a lot more complicated! We found Couch & Associates through some internet digging. Their new San Francisco office is super convenient to both of our workplaces so we set up an appointment with Charles to do our taxes. Turns out that he is much smarter than we are and thought our taxes were pretty simple! Of course, he is also the guy who worked with the Feds to come up with a worksheet for domestic partners or gay married couples filing their federal taxes - so of course he thinks this is simple! The worksheets we filled out prior to our meeting were really helpful. Charles was really informative and on the ball when we met him. Our taxes were done in almost no time. KeAloha was super sweet and went through the final product with us so we (sort of!) understood what had been done and what we need to do for next year. Bonus points because we got refunds! My fervent hope is that DOMA will be struck down this year and we can get married and then go back to doing our own taxes on the internet. But if that doesn't happen at least we know that Charles, KeAloha, and the rest of their team will be there for us ready to do the hard work for us! read more

So, it's tax season again and I'm thinking back to my experience with Couch and Associates when they prepared my 2013 return. Let's see... As another review mentioned, staff had a snooty tone over the phone. I suppose I was duped into thinking I was dealing with a premium operation. (Well, it was in one way: price.) I also was asked to sign a fairly imposing memorandum in order to engage the service. During my visit Ms. Couch spent a lot of time chatting and asking personal questions, which didn't leave a lot of time or energy to focus on details of the tax situation that prompted me to seek a preparer in the first place. When my return was done, I found an error in calculating a deduction because they got my age wrong. Why did they assume my age instead of asking me? I then spent a fair amount of time playing phone tag to explain the error and--what should have been quite unnecessary--reminding Ms. Couch that I had paid her a considerable fee to have my return done correctly and on time. From her end, I got the impression she thought she was doing me a favor. In the end, I did get the forms I needed, but I also found that one of the original documents I had provided was missing. They never located it for me. The next year, I went to a different preparer, who was no-nonsense, got the job done right, and at half the price. read more

I don't write reviews often but after my experience with Couch and Associates I was beyond compelled to speak of my experience. I was in a bad place tax wise, I had neglected them for a number of years and it had gotten to the point where the IRS was beating down my door aggressively. Not sure what's going on here. My wife and I were looking for a new tax preparer and I decided to call Couch & Associates in mid-February based on the positive reviews here and the location. After asking if they were accepting new clients (they were), I had a nice initial chat over the phone with someone who dutifully took down our basic info, gave me a quote, and said we would be sent a tax organizer to begin gathering documents and additional info. We have a fairly straightforward tax situation and just want it done right. After a week and a half or so, I still hadn't heard or received anything. When I called to follow up, they had no idea who I was and claimed to have no record of speaking with me, even after we chatted for 15-20 minutes last time. Once again, I gave my contact info, and was told they'd look into it and get back to me. I assumed it must have been a simple misunderstanding or they were just busy, but I never heard back again, and it was getting too far into tax season, so we went with someone else. Very strange. If they didn't have time or couldn't take on new clients, they could have just told me and there would be no hard feelings! I made an appointment with Couch and Associates to discuss tax issues surrounding a cash gift from a family member. I had high expectations based on the rave review on Yelp. My consultation was with Charles. He was not experienced with this particular issue, and the advice he was able to give me he had to look up online on the spot. As he scrolled through the IRS documents on his monitor, he kept saying "Ugh!" as if they were giving him the biggest headache. I would say he did the bare minimum, was rather brusque in his manner and couldn't wait to hustle me out of his office. So I was disappointed with the consultation, but not really upset enough to write a bad review. Then I get a message from Charles saying I still owed $200 for the consultation even though I paid on the way out. This sparked a frantic search for the receipt. No, no, no. Just no. Worked with partial success with Ke'Aloha on accounting/taxes for a nonprofit I directed, and decided to do personal taxes one year when I came up too close to the deadline. Gave her a box of documents -- TOO many -- just before taxes were due, a big mea culpa; BUT I put the most important stuff at the top with a draft of EACH/EVERY needed form and an instruction sheet with a list of priorities on what to look over in terms of finding possible deductions, with associated documentation in its own folder on top of the box (and a comment to "look through the box for x,y,z ONLY IF you have time"). She simply transcribed what I already had on the draft forms onto her own forms -- not a single change, no additional deductions, etc. -- and signed her name. Charged me several hundred dollars, and wouldn't offer any refund (even partial) when requested. I looked over my forms later when I had time and submitted an amended return with substantial $$ coming back to me, a huge chunk having essentially gone into her pocket. UGH. read more
