Every time I come to Boulder, I DEMAND a stop at Savory! This place is a wonderland for those of us who love to cook - they have every spice you couldn't find at the store, and many more for you to peruse through. The thing that I first loved about the store? Their nifty little bundles. My first trip was when I was juuuust starting to cook, and those bundles were SO attractive. You could get a whole range of dishes done and they pair them perfectly! Low sodium spices, or BBQ spices, or fajita spices.. you can get a variety in a set and they compliment each other. Oh, my favorite? Bloody Mary spice mix. :) Plus, you're able to TEST them! Want a smell? or a taste? You can definitely get that here. They also usually have some free samples around the store! This place is amazing. I actually take out of town visitors here to smell all of the amazing spices. Who knew that 8 kinds of cinnamon all smelled differently. Amazing spice shop with very reasonable prices and simple packaging! Lots of curry spice blend mixes with easy recipes (great for a novice cook like me). I came away with tandoori, tikka masala and vindaloo spice mixes, taco seasoning and italian seasoning. Excellent selection that covers all sorts of food types. I think they've covered every continents spice selection in one store. Staff was friendly and very helpful. It's nice being allowed to sample spices before purchasing them. We walked away with roughly $50 worth of spices and cocoa mixes. Best spice shop in town. Locally owned and it shows in the staff. You can tell that the staff like what they do. They are full of suggestions for meals. This place is the best. Not only do they offer very high quality single variety herbs, spices, and salts, but they have a huge variety of amazing spice blends. While the blends cover countries around the globe, I believe that Savory actually crafts their own version of each blend locally. The staff is always incredibly knowledgeable and helpful in finding just what you're looking for, and they always make excellent new recommendations. I love that you can buy bags of spices as well, which cuts down on both the waste and cost of bottles. I'm also happy to say that as a university lecturer, I've had students visit this shop for various projects, and they have always been welcomed and well-taken care of by the staff. Additionally, CU faculty get a small discount, and members get a complementary spice blend during their birthday months. Overall a wonderful place! read more

The Savory Spice Shop it is not just a regular spice shop, it is an experience and adventure around the world for your taste buds. I am a private chef, often I feel the need to modify and reinvent some of my dishes and I never worry because "Savory". You can try and taste hundred of spices from Italian Truffle sea salt to African Ras el Ranout.............the organic baked black garlic!!!!!!!! The staff is very helpful and the owner Dan, " the spice guru," is just a great person. They actually create all the different spice mixes, they don't just buy and sell them. If you can't find a spice at vitamin cottage, or wholepaycheck, they probably have it here. It seemed like they had a really great selection, of all their "brand" spices and spice blends. Which will be great for most people, but unfortunately I wanted a lovely smoked Paprika from Catalonia, they had something close, but it lacked the sweetness, complexity, and subtle nuances, that a brands such as La Dalia, El Ray, or even Santo Domingo have. It was disappointing, bitter in the way Starbucks over roasts their coffee, or maybe it was just stale? It probably doesn't get a lot of turnover. I love Catalonian cooking, & hope to find some decent spices one day, I guess I'll bring a shopping list next time I'm on the East Coast. Is there a proper spice shop in the Denver metro? read more

My suitcase smelled like delicious spices after carrying home all my purchases from here! This store was so much fun- I could easily spend hours and tons of $$$ here! The people are also very nice and helpful. I love how they encourage you to taste and/or smell the various spices, salts, and flavorings. They have everything for baking, grilling, smoking, curing, etc. Try some of the different cocoa powders to make your baked goods extra-special. Make some mulled wine for the holidays with the mulled wine spices and cloth sachets. Season your popcorn or dips with one of the cheese powders. I'd heard about the Savory shop in Denver (featured on the Food Network) and was so pleased when we got one in Boulder! Savory is such a great job if you're a chef-wannabe like me, or even if you're just looking for some great mixtures of herbs for roasts or a really rare spice (like grains of paradise, which they have! Excellent stuff.) I could spend hours in this place. My husband and I purchased the Summit County spice/herb seasoning blend (salt free, yippee! I hate it when seasonings are full of salt and not much else) and the Bohemian Forest blend (with lavender, it'll be great on chicken I think!) We also got a couple of other great blends. I definitely can't wait to go back to Savory and buy all kinds of other goodies! read more

As a cook I can't imagine a better place than Savory for fresh spices. Their fresh mixes are amazing for all foods including, some great Salt Free mixes. They have some amazing rubs for grilling meat or vegs. You ever hear of the 'Aji Amarillo' from Peru? Very hard to get ... Savory has them all the time. I'm sure they have other hard to find items I haven't discovered...yet. Indian, Asian, Mexican, African, Jamaican, Cajun, BBQ, anything you like. Literally hundreds of choices at this store. A beautiful shop. It smells heavenly when you walk in. And then there are the rows of tidy glass jars filled with gorgeous seeds, spices, mushrooms, chilis, leaves, etc. They have some things that are hard to find, and some that aren't hard to find but buying in bulk is so much cheaper. Their prices are very reasonable, and they are helpful and seem quite glad to assist you in finding what you need. Plus, you get to taste and smell many of the offerings. It is like buying cheese: yes, you can get many bries, cheddars, chevres, etc at Whole Foods and some even at Safeway. This is my new favorite place! Stopped by to get some fun salts - got a black salt that's mixed with charcoal and truffle sea salt. The truffle salt is the best way I've found to add truffle flavor to food - WAY stronger than oil, so you don't need much. The staff is super enthusiastic and will let you try everything. We absolutely love this savory spice store and come here about once a month to buy anything and everything we need for our kitchen. Unfortunately, the last couple of times we have been here, the service has been uncharacteristically poor. The woman that helped us was rude and unfriendly at each occasion. They also changed their labeling and pricing system, which was difficult at first to understand why a bottle with spices was the same cost as a refill. We asked the woman at the counter and she rudely replied this is how it has always been, what do you want. We will continue to come here, but may not visit as much or make this our go to store if we always are "helped" in this manner. read more

As a former employee, I can't be expected to be too objective, but I love this place and continue to give them my business after parting on good terms. Dan - the owner - is a great guy and I developed a huge respect for his business while I worked there. I use their blends and spices on a daily basis and wouldn't dream of using anything else. If you're looking for - and can tell the difference with - some incredibly specific brand of Spanish paprika, go ahead and order it on the internet. For the typical home cook, Savory's spices are insanely high quality, and it takes a great deal to stump the staff on a seasoning or technique. They'll also custom blend just about anything. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable - our afternoon foodie discussions were truly awe-inspiring. Oh, and it's a locally owned business with the best interests of the Boulder/Denver food scene at heart. Discovered these folks online and made a mental note to check them out. A work colleague recommended Peppercorn in Boulder as a source of various Hot Sauces. By serendipitous chance I parked just of Spruce St and virtually exited the parking lot via their store. As someone who roasts, grinds and blends his own spices I couldn't return to the car without a diversion through the store. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable and the odor of the ground spices clearly indicated they were fresher than anything I'd previously encountered, e.g. their turmeric. While I'm a couple of months away from blending my next batch of Curry Powders I will definitely be sourcing the raw spices from these guys, Having picked up a few novelty item (e.g. Ghost Chillies) I'm looking forward to experimenting with a dish or few, This review is based of first impressions and 30 years experience of cooking Indian food from scratch (what can I say; I'm a Brit & indian is the unofficial national cuisine) but I'm looking to a ongoing relationship with these folks! read more

After discovering Savory Spice Shop, it's really hard to buy spices at the grocery store. Walking into Savory is an olfactory treat! Every spice I've ever needed, they have. And then there are the fun unique mixtures they create. I love that I am not stuck buying a whole jar of some spice that I might only use a few times a year, and can really load up (and save a lot of $$) on those that I go through quickly. The prices are very reasonable, and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. It'sgreat when they make cooking suggestions, and the recipe cards they provide are quite helpful. Some of my unique favorites are the Madagascar Pure Vanilla Powder, and for grilling, Pike's Peak Butcher's Rub, Pearl St. Plank Rub, and Barrier Reef Seasoning. read more

This is another great location. I am more familiar with the shop in Littleton, but the Boulder shop is great too. It's pretty inside, and spacious, so you can taste the wares at your leisure. I liked their broad selection of hard-to-find spices (pomegranate molasses! Orange water!) and I loved tasting my way around the world. The staff was friendly and helpful. While the spices are a bit on the expensive side, the cost is totally worth it because the spices are high-quality. This place is my go-to spice destination! read more

Savory Spice Shop in Boulder is terrific. They have everything you could possible want and more. I went in with a recipe that had about 20 different spices I needed. The clerk took the recipe, assembled the ingredients in quantities close to what I needed. He also suggested things like using tomato powder to make the paste I needed in the recipe, that way I make what I need and dont have any waste. while he was gathering all the spices, i had a chance to get things i needed for the house. Black Onyx cocoa, Maldon Salt, herbs de Provence no salt, harissa, & whole nutmeg. I am defiantly going to be a loyal customer for all my spice needs. Why spend money on old, stale spices when I can have fresh and amazing ingredients? I tell everyone I know how amazing this place is. read more
