It's tucked in an industrial park area, but there's plenty of parking and the service is just as warm and welcoming as their other location in Morton Grove! There's even a picnic table outside for anyone wanting to enjoy their hot empanadas right then and there. They offer a well priced lunch special that's $16 for 2 empanadas, 2 sauces, a side, and a drink! It's a great deal! I got several empanadas - Butter chicken which tastes just a delicious plate of homemade butter chicken wrapped in a flaky baked crust. It's not spicy, but spiced well for all the flavors! Philly Cheesesteak our family favorite. Cheesesteak in an easy to hold flaky crust. I kinda wish there was a little more cheese, but they don't skimp on the meat! Chicken pot pie, another tasty empanada. They top it with a sprinkle of fresh rosemary which isn't quite a favorite for our family, but it's pretty easy to remove most of it. It has all the fixings and flavorings of a warm, comforting pot pie! Mac and cheese - who would have imagined it could be an empanada, but it is and it's tasty. My son loves this because he really loves Mac n cheese and loves the empanada crusts. I got the elote as a side which is buttery and salty, a good side to accompany the meal. Fresh corn that crunched which made us happy. I also got the longonisa fried rice! If you never had longinisa, it's a must try. Imagine it to be similar to Chinese sausage, but less cured and just delicately seasoned. Everything about this fried rice made me wish I had more. I looooove Savory Crust. This location is for carry out only. There is no seating, just a pick up window and I knew this ahead of time so it wasn't a problem. Their website states this as well. They have an online ordering system which I utilized and it was easy to navigate. My order was ready at the provided ETA too. I had the Argentina beef empanada and also the Ube horchata. The empanada is wildly delicious. Very flavorful. The crust is fluffy and crispy at the same time. The beef itself is seasoned and cooked perfectly. I had it with chimichurri sauce and it went well with it. The Ube horchata was meh for me. I wanted to try it though and I'm glad I did. Just isn't for me. Hubby got 2 picadillo, 1 chicken pot pie, 1 Philly, 1 Argentinian chicken, I got 2 Argentinian beef, 1 chicken pot pie, 1 Philly, and 1 spinach and feta - we split the Brie bacon and cheese special one. We couldn't finish them all (so excited for leftovers tomorrow), but my husband loved his and I was literally dancing after every bite. The flaaaavors!!! My goodness they just pop! The Argentinian beef brought me so much comfort. My mother in law is from Argentina so I was curious how these would be! Every single bite was packed with flavor! The chicken pot pie was literal comfort food!!! A handheld pot pie? Yes PLEASE! They nailed these flavors! Every empanada I have ever had has been great. They always have interesting new special empanadas and they never disappoint. My wife loves the bowls, her favorite is the coconut curry chicken. Their wings are bleeping huge! All their sauces are incredible. My wife also loves the tostone chips. Even their waffle fries are great. I've probably been to this place 50-100 times over the last 5 years and I have never had a bad meal. Probably a top 5 restaurant in my area. They also have great customer service. Once I was shorted a dessert empanada and they refunded me my money. The people that work here are all so nice and genuine. Keep killing it guys! I tried all of the empanadas, perhaps my favorites are the Argentinian beef, chicken curry, and Somosa - but all are yummy. The sauces are also tasty, I usually have left over to use them with something else during the week. I like the Avocado Lime Cilantro, Spicy Chimichurri, and Sriracha Aioli. This time we also had the Blackberry Hoisin Ginger which is amazing. I would not have it with empanadas, bit my friend said it was great pairing for the Mac & Cheese one. I had been looking for an empanada spot in the suburbs and I now I can look no further! Savory Crust is located in an inconspicuous spot, off the main road. Don't think I would have found this place if I didn't search for it specifically online. But regardless, this is certainly a hole in the wall joint. The space inside is very small, only room to look at their menu and order. The food comes out pretty fast and all the empanadas are packaged in their own labeled sleeve. The food stayed warm the whole ride home (which was 30 minutes for us). I tried 5 different empanadas: picadillo, chicken pot pie, spinach and feta, samosa, and guava and cheese. Each empanada had such a buttery crust. I was definitely impressed by the flavor profiles of each empanada flavor, as they were spot on. I was most impressed by the samosa empanada as the filling tasted just like the filling of a samosa (and I'm Indian so I would know). Favorite flavors were the picadillo and the samosa. Least favorite was the spinach and feta, mostly because the filling didn't have much feta. The guava and cheese empanada was saved for dessert and it uses a different crust than the others. This crust was super flaky, like a puff pastry. The inside was packed full of cream cheese and guava jam. Perfect balance of sweetness. I will title this review, 'Stick to the Empanadas'. I need to separate my review b/c I haven't made the empanadas yet. But I have had them in the past and I enjoyed most flavors. The problem was the wings. I had once before and they were fine. I had the mango habanero yesterday and they were inedible. I have never thrown out wings before. They had a thick, soggy crust and the skin was rubbery like it wasn't fried. It was like eating coated, flavorless rubber bands. I don't even know how they did this. New cook? I just hope the empanadas are still good. I love supporting a local busines, especially one as unique as this with friendly, fast service. But there is no excuse for this. Got the Philly cheesesteaks (I'm visiting from Philly) and it was pretty good! Also tried their Argentinian Chicken and Pork Belly! Their dough is so good, slightly sweet, but not overwhelming. Love they have dipping sauces that come with every empanada order and they also provide you with recommended pairings. Large selection of different options, and they all look so good you'll be tempted to try them all. I ordered 7 total: 5 were dinner style and 2 were more like dessert. Unpretentious, local, and delicious. What a gem this place is and not to mention, my daughter loves it. We tried the mac n cheese empanada which was good, but the mushroom one is much better. Flavor is on point and crust is not overpowering the filling. We also tried the ube horchata which I wish had more ube taste, but we did it for the aesthetics. It was a little hard to find it, but a small tip is when you find the office building, go to the right side and you will see the first door behind the truck loading area. But just to avoid misunderstanding, I have to insist that even the chicken curry one was so yummy and full of flavor! I like Argentina beef slightly better because of the unique flavor and soft and juicy beef inside. All dipping sauces matched very well and added new flavors onto all empanadas. Blackberry hoisin sauce was especially good and uniquely enhanced them. Cucumber lime juice did not have much acidity which sometimes causes my stomach burn. I liked the gentle cucumber juice a lot. It calms down our stomach after eating these bags of punchy flavors. And even before opening the garlic fried rice, we could tell the great smell was leaking out into our car. When you opened the lid, that smell was so good. It was literally a perfect "appetizer". Towards the end, there was a pool of oil on the bottom, so that part was a little negative, but I thought this fried rice was a must-try item, too. So overall, this place easily went over my expectations. I recommend everything we ordered today. There are rice bowls, various side menus, unique drinks and different types of sauces. And they are pretty affordable as well. Small negative sides are no bathroom here and I could only see one small table outside. So not really for hanging out with friends. Best takeout-only restaurant in Carol Stream right now! And for after the pandemic too, because there's zero sit-down space here. I caught wind of this place from one of our trustees, I think, and since I've had my own good share of empanadas growing up Filipino, I figured that a restaurant built around just empanadas would be a success. Oh, but it was. I've been here twice now, up and down the menu (including some specials, which I hope you get to try). Each comes with sauces; if you're having trouble figuring out which sauces to go with which, there's a handy guide, or you can just ask the person behind the window. Savory empanada crusts have a crumbly edge, aren't too thick, and are nicely browned thanks to an egg wash. They're real lookers, and they taste buttery too! Sweet empanada crusts are layered (like a croissant) and sprinkled with coarse sugar. Both types have a high filling-to-crust ratio, unlike other empanadas I grew up with. As for the contents... * Chicken Curry - delicious, authentic, practically a samosa in an empanada shell. * Spinach Feta - spinach properly sautéed, not soggy; excellent flavor profile * Pork Belly - the belly is so very tender. Great taste and goes well with the blackberry sauce * Bacon Brie and FIg - my goodness. Another really well designed empanada, with the perfect blend of savory and sweet flavors; neither the bacon nor the fig overpowering * Ube - throwing a bone at Filipinos and other east Asians, this one proves one again that Ube (a purple sweet-potato wannabe) is best consumed with sugar. My wife and I ordered carry out here last night due to the great reviews on Yelp. The place is not real easy to find. Its in a unit of an office building and around the corner from the front of it. There is a small sign in the lot directing you around the corner. Once you arrive they ask you if you want to place an order or if you are picking up. They act somewhat afraid of you. COVID thing I guess? We ordered online and the pick up time was 30 minutes. We showed up in about 20 and the order was already ready and somewhat cold. My wife and I both had the PHILLY CHEESESTEAK EMPANADAS with spicy Chimichurri sauce. $5.50 ea. A Spanish or Latin American pastry turnover filled with a variety of savory ingredients and baked. The philly has thinly-sliced Beef, Green Peppers, Onions, and Provolone Cheese. We ordered extra sauce but it was not needed as the sauce is already on the side. The reviews were correct. I can't tell you what I ordered but I think I ordered two empanadas one chicken and one beef. They were out of this world, the crust is a flaky buttery crust that's just out of this world. I also ordered a rice bowl. I don't remember what I ordered but it was delicious. The only reason I didn't leave a 5 star review was the cost to quantity ratio. They do have other things on the menu. FYI, they do not have regular ground beef empanadas. I did enjoy that the cashier explained all the different types of empanadas they had.
