Cantarito Vallartazo With Guacamole And Chips
    Steve A.

Better Mexican food is here than the other place in this same strip mall, although the prices are higher. El Vallartazo certainly is expensive for some basic items. It's easy to find Mexican places in West Chicago, and this is among the more authentic ones. Higher prices are about the only bad thing you get. That and there's a lot of seafood and not much else, so it's slim pickings if you don't like fish or whatever. Came in here after not liking the other Mexican place next to here because of few of any choices. It's La Gisoles, and the menu is very limited. The menu isn't that great here either, but they have margaritas, which the other place didn't or any kind of alcohol whatsoever. Expensive menu. The drinks are good, especially cantaritos, of which they have a few of these. All sounded good. We got the Cantarito Vallartazo. It's about $17 and comes in a clay pot. That's a lot for any drink, but this was good though. It has so much stuff in it. This is Modelo with chopped fruit, grapefruit soda, lemon juice, orange juice, and a small bottle of tequila. As for the food, it was seafood and not much else. We ended up with Aguacate, which is guacamole. It's about $8 for some with tortilla chips. They gave a lot for the price. It helped after the drink. The guacamole was creamy and spicy. Good place if you like authentic Mexican. It's even better if you also happen to like seafood. The rest of the menu is limited but you can find some good things.

This place was great last week, today I ordered Ceviche Vallartazo for 30 dollars and it was awful I let my server know that I didn't care for it and I wanted something different he went and let the manager know, the manager Maria come over and told me I had to pay for it that she had never comp anything from her restaurant. I have been to the most amazing and sophisticated restaurants in many countries and I never had that happen. I worked in the restaurant business for the past 27 years and it is always about the customer, I told her I was here last week, and it was 3 of us and her reply was, oh and you asked for separate checks, I said nop I paid I can show you the receipt. Talking about customer service. This lady doesn't belong in the hospital business

This place offers 38 dinner platters. All with a vast variety of sea food. The meals are made to order and hot off the grill. The freshness is great and the seasoning is on point. The servers are very knowledgeable and make great suggestions. Do not be intimidated by the cultural difference. This is a very welcoming place and priced just right. The portion sizes are a little large so, you will not leave hungry. Great place to take your partner for date night. Oh! This is also a BYOB location (for an additional $2.99 per table). On Fridays they have a live Mexican band that plays as well. Buen Provecho!

Food was awesome, service was good! I'd love for them to keep open the option to BYOB!

Yum! The paella was yummy and loved the complimentary ceviche. Service was decent, so that's why it's 4 Stars. Overall a great experience!

They brought a small bowl of chips and had three different types of salsa in plastic bottles (like the old style ketchup and mustard ones at diners) with three small dishes to put them in. Chips were thick, crispy, and salty. Not sure if they have free refills, as we finished our chips rather fast and they took the bowl away afterwards. I ordered the 22 oz strawberry margarita and it was probably one of the best margs I've had. Came with strawberry slices in the drink and a tajin rim. Great deal for $10. I ended up getting three tacos traditional style: Birria, steak, and chorizo. The birria one was really good, just wish the tortilla was dipped in juice like some of the other birria tacos I've had. It was my first time having chorizo, and I would order it again. The steak taco was good, but nothing special. Service was a little slow despite there only being one other table, but our table was talking anyway so it wasn't too much of an issue. Overall, would go back if I was in the area, but wouldn't go out of my way to go there.

Given the number of reviews for its location, it appears to be a local staple for Mexican food. The menu was a good size and they had a lot of different choices of meat choices for tacos. My review today is based on the taco dinner that I ordered. I went with my standard go to selection for tacos in a dinner: Tripa dorada, Al Pastor and Asada. I can definitely say that it was all very different, in a positive way. Their tripa dorada was fried to almost a chicharron (pork rind). I've only had tripa done this way in a few other places and it's not common. The Al Pastor was different from what I've had anywhere else. The meat selection was different. The marinade was different and was more on the sweeter side.....some kind of sweet spice, I can not point it out. The carne asada was also a very different cut. It was nicely chopped. The meat was very tender and was easy on my bite as I ate. Despite all the differences that I am pointing out, the food definitely felt fresh and good quality. This is perhaps why it has as many reviews as it does, they want to be selective and not afraid to do it slightly different than everyone else. The portions were very generous. The salsas were also good. They have one green salsa and two red salsa options. One red salsa was spicier than the other. Another highlight were the Totopos (chips). They looked home made, made in house unlike a lot of places where chips may be processed. The only thing that I would critique was that my asada had a noticeable oil drip, more than I would have liked. That's the only thing I would say. The waitress was very attentive and would come around very often to check on me. I would encourage you to come check it out for yourself.
