We had a very disappointing experience at Pet Orphans of Southern California. We adopted a dog…read morethrough spcaLA and were referred there for his neuter procedure, which was required as part of the adoption agreement. The issues began at drop-off. I arrived on time at 8:30 a.m., but there was a long line of owners and dogs waiting outside. Many of the dogs appeared to be puppies, fosters, or newly adopted pets still adjusting and difficult to manage. I waited approximately 20 minutes while trying to control my 65-pound dog. When I reached the front, staff said they had no record of our appointment and asked, in an unprofessional manner, whether I had completed the intake form that was supposedly emailed to me. I had never received it. I was then handed paperwork to complete on-site while continuing to manage my dog in a crowded environment. On the form, I disclosed that my dog had been experiencing chronic diarrhea since being picked up as a stray, that we were actively working with our veterinarian to identify the cause, and that our veterinarian had cleared him for surgery. Staff then told me they would not proceed if he had diarrhea. I explained that this condition predated the adoption, that the neuter was required by the shelter, and that we had already obtained veterinary clearance. Staff repeatedly went back and forth between me and the veterinarian before eventually presenting a high-risk consent form. The communication around this was especially concerning. When the form was presented, I was told that by signing it, I was accepting that if anything happened to my dog, it would be my fault. I understand that additional risks can exist, but this was handled in a dismissive and inappropriate manner. If the clinic had sent the intake paperwork in advance or reviewed the medical concerns beforehand, this could have been addressed prior to my driving an hour from West Adams to Van Nuys with a dog who does not travel well. I was also disappointed that additional charges were presented for items such as an e-collar, pain medication, and IV fluids. For a required adoption procedure, these added costs felt excessive. Pick-up was similarly poor. When my dog was returned, a staff member commented, "Make sure to take care of the diarrhea because he still has it," despite our earlier detailed discussion of the condition and treatment plan. While loading him into the car, I noticed feces on his cone, tail, and legs. This suggested he had soiled himself and had not been adequately cleaned before discharge, which was both upsetting and concerning from a sanitation and post-operative care standpoint. Overall, this experience reflected poor communication, lack of professionalism, and inadequate attention to patient care. I would not return to Pet Orphans of Southern California and would not recommend this clinic to others. I also plan to share this experience with spcaLA so they are aware of the concerns regarding this referral partnership.

We spoke for about 20 minutes about a Shih Tzu I was interested in adopting, and I genuinely felt like we connected. The conversation was friendly, informative, and left me excited about the possibility of bringing one of the dogs home. During our conversation, I told Melissa that I absolutely wanted to move forward. I provided extensive information about myself, including my home address, and even sent a video of my home as part of the screening process. I was clearly serious about adopting and was actively participating in the process. At the time, the dogs were still being transported from the Midwest and had not yet arrived. I explained that I was happy to move forward, but I wanted a FaceTime call or some form of confirmation once the dog was actually in her custody before sending a deposit. To me, that seemed like a reasonable request. Adopting a pet is a major commitment, and I wanted to verify the dog had arrived safely and make sure it was the right fit before sending money. Shortly afterward, I was asked to send a $500 deposit and received an invoice reflecting a $1,000 adoption fee. When I didn't send the deposit that day, I was blocked on Instagram within a matter of hours. What bothered me most was the pressure. I wasn't refusing to adopt, nor was I wasting anyone's time. I had already spent time on the phone, provided personal information, and sent a video of my home because I fully intended to move forward once I could confirm the dog had arrived and everything checked out. I simply wanted to exercise reasonable due diligence before sending money. That's why I was so surprised by what happened next. The tone of the communication changed dramatically, and the entire experience left me feeling uncomfortable. One additional note: I previously posted a review describing this experience, but it no longer appears on the page. I'm not sure why, but I wanted to share my experience again. Other dog trainers who evaluated her indicated Board and Train was the only way to train her, but I was concerned that after spending thousands of dollars, she would regress when she got home and I would not know what to do. I finally found Barks and Boundaries where Tony offers individual lessons in how to train your dog yourself. Right away I appreciated that, unlike other trainers I consulted, Tony listened to me and acknowledged all the effort I had put into trying to train my own dog. He recognized the things I had learned and the progress we had made, and we started from there. Tony quickly gave me the confidence I needed to get to the next level and get the most out of my dog. His humility and encouragement are a rare find in someone with so much experience, and they were just what I needed to help me overcome my discouragement. In particular, he helped me see my dog for who she is and what she can do; he helped me recognize her personality and set my expectations; he helped me finally learn how to train my dog to walk beside me--we finally got there! My dog knows how to heel and she will do it, even if another dog is walking by. In fact, I can now walk both of my dogs at the same time, even though my other dog is untrained. (Tony assured me that my trained dog would obey me, even if my other dog is untrained and walking more freely on his leash. She did! In fact, what I have discovered after these 5 months, is that my untrained dog is starting to get the idea and he is even easier to walk--he seems to understand "heel" now also.) Being able to walk both dogs together is life-changing! Tony gave individual and customized attention to our training. I never felt rushed and I always left there excited to walk my dog and work on what we had learned. In particular, one thing I learned was that I need to be sure and re-call my dog with the same tone of voice every time I call her from the yard. One time she got out of the yard (we are still working on her not leaving the yard unaccompanied) and instead of yelling her name, I called to her in a normal tone, the same way I always do, and she whipped right around and came back to me.
