Love the atmosphere, cozy family style restaurant with simply yet rich decor. The waiter was very professional answering any and all questions. Pretty traditional Haitian food with alternative names most likely to appease the demographic of the town. This restarant is the best kept secret in Montclair. It's THE place to go if you want quality Haitian Food with excellent presentation. I have been here on a date with my Significant Other, a late lunch with my best friend, hosted my brothers birthday party here, and even called and picked up some food to go. Each time we had a great experience. There is something for everybody, from vegetarians to the most pickiest of eaters! The owner is attentive to your every need and very professional. Figuring out whether to give Saveur Creole a three or a four star rating was a very difficult choice. While we enjoyed our meal the restarurant was run very poorly, apparently the chief overbooked them for the night and threw everything into disarray. On one hand all of the food my family and I had was very good. I had the chicken etufee and it was quite good. My mom had the shrimp etufee and my dad had the haitiana with eggplant and shrimp and both seemed to enjoy their dishes. All of our dishes came with a well done salad and the choice of two soups, but we all picked the bouillon creole and all felt like we made a great choice. Our problems came with the service. We had to specifically ask for someone to give us menus and pour our wine. Once we figured out what we wanted we needed to specifically ask the manager to get the waitress to take our orders. Our waitress never gave us their list of specials. Before we started eating our main courses a large party came in and took control of the restaurant, it was very hard to hear what dish the server was bringing to us none the less talk to someone else at your table. In short I was not thrilled with my time at Saveur Creole but would be willing to give them a second chance. read more

I have been to this restaurant twice now. The ambiance is good, food is presentable and okay and service was exceptional until recently. I went there to celebrate a special occasion and they surprised us with a dessert which I thought was very nice. However, they added it to the bill and forced us to pay for it. When we questioned it, we were informed that's what they do on birthdays. This is definitely unacceptable and definitely bad customer service. I did not order a dessert and I did not get to choose. I used to love this place and would always recommend it but after that experience I may not return. I don't believe that's the practice, I believe we were taken advantage of. At any restaurant, guests do get a free dessert of their choice to celebrate special occasions. I feel like we were blindsided. The fact that they did not apologize and admitted to no wrong make this even worst. They should not try to surprise their guests if they going to put it on the bill. I guess I should thank them for making me finally create a Yelp account. We decided to give this place a chance after the first bad experience. A mistake we will not be making again. They have very deceptive practices. The take-out menu on their website reflects prices they do not honor. Once you go in to pick up your food they charge you the prices on the regular eat-in menu. This happened MONTHS AGO (the first time) and the owner Ron gave some lame excuse about updating the website and acted like he was doing us a favor by modifying the bill. It happened again TONIGHT and when I called the restaurant the executive chef gave the same lame excuse. It's very disappointing because I can't abide a business that cheats its customers. This place was fairly non-descript and to be honest we almost did the "let's walk in and bounce if we aren't feeling it." and wow are we glad we stayed. While the prices may seem high, each entree seems to come with soup and salad and we left having eaten some of the most delicious and satisfying food we've ever had. Easily one of our top 3 meals. The shrimp étouffée had a deep heat that made you want to go back for more and the Haitiana with eggplant legume and shrimp was incredible. Their rice? Unreal. The beans had a tobacco like smokiness to them from clove - to hell with your typical red beans side. It's also BYOB and there's a liquor store next door. Excellent service to boot. Incredible service. Great recommendations and a phenomenal staff. I would have stayed there all night. When they say spicy they mean spicy. Prepare the tums mommy because its spicy night. I believe I broke out in a sweat just smelling a few of the items. On the lighter side was a variety of different items that sparkled from sweet to salty to spicy. I went in on a Sunday. The place was empty for a Sunday. Food was delicious! However I felt it was a bit pricey.

I hosted a bridal dinner here for 13 people on Saturday. Setting the reservation was tedious as the restaurant does not answer the phone. I got a response to the first email I sent, but not to the follow up email inquiring about decorating the table. I ended up having to text the cell phone number they have on the website to get a response. The day of the event, the first people to arrive (the bridesmaids) were told the reservation was at 7:00, even though I had an email where I requested 6:00. I'm glad they got there early so they could start setting up before the other guests arrived! When people began to place their orders, a few people ordered appetizers as their meal. The man taking the orders asked who the party planner was and came over to tell me (as the guests listened in) people can't just order appetizers because he will end up losing money. He said he would have denied the reservation if he knew people would be ordering appetizers for their meal. BEYOND UNPROFESSIONAL! I told him people were ordering what they wanted from the menu, and I can't help if that was all they wanted. He huffed through the rest of the guests' orders (several people ordered entrees as well, but he was still visibly upset). I personally ordered an empanada salad with beef and chicken empanadas. They gave me spinach empanadas. I was so frustrated, I didn't bother to exchange it. I did not enjoy it and ended up wrapping it to go and giving it away. Once we finished eating, he began to rush us out. While checking his watch, he commented in creole that we needed to hurry up and leave. I guess he didn't realize we had several people in the group who spoke the language fluently! After paying, it took a long time for people to get their change. One guest hadn't received her change, and he gave her a hard time about it when she pointed it out. He eventually gave her the change. It is safe to say, I will NEVER go back there, nor will I recommend it to anyone! read more

First, the service and seating can be spotty. they had difficulties seating us at a table. They were confused and unorganized. But, all that can be forgiven with great food. However, that was not meant to be. For an app I had the Haitian caviar which was good. I tried the empanadas but it had no flavor. I had the goat for dinner. This was a surprise and great discovery. The food was delicious. I personally appreciate, that the food is largely made to order as it makes me feel like my food isn't simply being reheated and thrown on a plate. I didn't dine in I ordered to go. The only thing I ordered was the chicken Empanada to go and they gave me the beef Empanada instead. I brought it back and they offered no apology and seemed very annoyed. I ordered it again in which I paid for the second order even though I returned the 1st order that I paid for! Once again they gave me beef instead of chicken! I was very upset because I haven't eaten beef in over 15 years and now I've beaten into twice in less than a hour. The lady very rudely goes in the back and shows me the containers they are stored in and says they are pre made and doesn't knows which is which. Smh never again! Totally amazing !!! What can I say, food was delicious, we tried the trini chicken, chicken etouffe, both dish was full of flavor, each entree came with soup and salad. Both the soups gumbo and vegetable soup was awesome. Only thing its BYOB, which isnt so bad since the liquor store is literally next door. The worst experience and treatment I've ever had at a restaurant. The place is very tiny and has one little bathroom. Went there to celebrate a friend's birthday and had a large party (which we let them know before hand so they should've been prepared). The owner (ron) messed up so many orders and he simply didn't care. Every time someone asked a question or made a request he huffed and puffed. He charged us extra on the bill. Even argued with one of my guests. And told us we should've went to McDonald. That's not even the worst of it. Basically don't go here save your money and go to Cuban Pete's up the street. Had dinner here with a group of friends last night. Service was super although we were the first party to arrive so we had no competition. Nonetheless we were a large group and everyone's food arrived in a timely way. We all raved about the food. It was spicy but that suited everyone in our group.
