    Things are heating up

This place used to be a Price Chopper ages ago and it's never looked better. The store is brightly lit and uses allot of the space. While most of it is clothes as to be expected they have a great selection of manny things. The story is always well lit and quite clean. The staff have always been quite friendly at checkout. They offer a saver club card to save 25% on Tuesdays (as well as a senior discount for 25% on Tuesdays) If you shop here frequently it's well worth getting the free card. There's no hassle in getting it either, you can sign up online or with a form located at the store. The figures, cllectters tins and plates are just inside the front door so it's easy to check out first thing. The book section is also always well stocked. It's fun to go through if you have some time to kill. You just never know what you may find. The selection of Figures is, while not a big selection what they do have is pretty varied and almost always in great shape at a very reasonable price. They also have quite a good selection of collectors plates to. Now what I come here for is the stuffed animals \ plushies and toys. Everything is neatly separated and loose \ small figures are bagged and collected hung on the wall making it easy to quickly look though them and find things you want. the plushies are in there own small section, either hanging on the chains or in the basket below. It;s very easy to sort through and never overcrowded. The bigger toys are easy to get to on the back wall shelf next to the plushies and smaller figures. Very easy to browse at a glance whats there with out having to do any digging.

Stuff for hipsters and queens, alike. Spent the whole morning there, and only looked at 3 things!

Ridiculous high prices on used and out of style clothing. This is not a thrift store -- some prices higher than retail

City Thrift offers a sprawling haven for treasure hunters and bargain seekers alike!…read more From the second you walk in, you are greeted by a large sign with what's on sale- there's something different every day! The stores sheer size allows for a diverse array of items, from vintage clothing to home furnishings, and everything in between. The vintage pieces are curated and in a separate area of the store. While they are more expensive than the rest of the store, I've always found the prices were fair (everything in this section is typically $10-20) for a vintage piece. Each season, the store puts out holiday decor and the selection is second to none! With shelves and shelves of new and vintage decor, it's easy to find that one piece to complete your holiday setting. While the vintage section and the holiday decor sections are amazing, I often skip scouring the racks otherwise. The clothes often are pricey for a thrift store ($10 for a t shirt). Items still with tags on are often priced for $20. If you're a fan of thrifted board games like I am, this is not a place to visit- the board game section is a maze to get through in the back corner of the store. Overall, a great stop if you're in the area (there are many thrift stores on Shawnee Mission Parkway alone). Dedicated hunters will find unique items worth the hunt (and isn't that the fun in it anyway?)

I've been to other City Thrift stores that felt clean, organized, and affordable. This Shawnee City Thrift was the complete opposite of the others I've been to. The store was messy with shoes piled on top of clothing racks, usually mismatched with no sizing. A lot of the clothing also wasn't in the right sections, so good luck if you're actually trying to browse by size. On top of that, most of the signs on the racks were missing, so it was hard to even tell where anything was supposed to go. The pricing was the biggest shock. Items were insanely overpriced, even when they were clearly damaged. I saw a shirt marked $16 just because it was Calvin Klein. I understand the charity aspect but thrift stores are also supposed to be a place where people can buy donated clothes affordably, and these prices honestly felt kind of mean. There are also no dressing rooms, which I can understand for liability reasons but there was only one mirror in the whole store for everyone to share. If you're going to take away fitting rooms, at least add more mirrors. To top it off, the staff was rude. Every employee I interacted with seemed annoyed that I needed help, and it made the whole place feel even more unwelcoming. I'm giving 2 stars because I've enjoyed other locations and they do have a lot of inventory, However I don't plan on returning to this location.

In the last 6 months they removed the best feature in the store, the unsorted shopping carts in the back. It was nice to get to hunt through a few carts, like a real treasure hunt. No more. Gone. Those were the best bargains, and I'd spend over $50-60 easily each week. Since the carts ended, they've been making the store more like a boutique, and I'm not convinced it's a good idea. This seems to be the trend for these thrift stores, perhaps it's to get more money from the donated goods, but they are pricing out a lot of their customers in my opinion. There are still bargains, but it's less and less common to come across lately.. Overpriced items sit for months in the showcase, and they never apply the color tag discounts to items in that case. I've seen the same 4 gaudy german hiking medals at $10 each (they were $15 for a long time) relegated to the bottom of the case, in a heap, on some sort of overpriced little china plate. Overpriced items sit, until they do a large sale (like 50% off white tags) once every few months, or they get repriced and moved around the store. I saw a $1.99 Star Trek game sitting by the toys, I came back 2 days later, it was in the showcase and priced at $19.99 - it was worth $10 on eBay once upon a time, and that was 4-5 years and 3 computer generations later. Someone needs to clue the staff in to how to price things, and not just look on eBay for the latest asking price. If you want to price donated goods at the eBay asking price, you're asking for a lot of your customers to head to City Thrift, Red Racks, or Goodwill. Also, it's been a year. Please pave your parking lot. There are potholes 4 ft x 4 ft wide just inside the entrance on Lamar. It's getting ridiculous. Update: They re-paved the lot and put some 25c bins in the back, an improvement!
