Great Indonesian restaurant! I love their skewers where you can mix and match skewers to your liking. We ordered the 3 skewer platter and did 2 pork + 1 beef skewers and the bakso complete. The bakso has 2 different types of noodles - vermicelli and yellow noodle. I really enjoyed the meatballs in the soup (it kind of reminds me of the meatballs in pho) and the tofu was delicious because it soaked up all of the flavors of the broth. It's a small place and feels like a mom and pop shop but the flavors are there. It's tasty and the prices are reasonable. I enjoy their skewers though I'd say their tempeh one is my least favorite but at least you know there's something for the vegetarians. Sate Texas might be the only Indonesian restaurant available within a 20 mile radius. It's a shame, because Indonesian food can be amazing. So with that said, I'm glad Sate Texas is around. We checked them out for the first time today and were pretty impressed. Unfortunately, they were not making Rendang or Ketoprak, which were the main reasons we drove there. Supposedly, they're understaffed and were sticking with mainly their barbecue dishes (Satay). So we ordered the dishes that they did have available including the Sate Babi, Gado Gado, Ayam Goreng, and Bakso. The Sate Babi was really good. It definitely had some real, authentic Indonesian flavors. The other dishes were pretty good, but nothing stood out as much as the satay. Prices are reasonable. Service is visibly short handed, but friendly. Hopefully, Sate Texas gets some more business and help so that they're able to serve Round Rock to their full potential. read more

Enjoyed it. Only a handful of dishes offered but the flavor is there and it satisfied my craving for an Indonesian meal enough to return. Ayam in the ayam bakar was super tender and char grilled to perfection, with a really tasty sweet marinade. Get the yellow rice (+$1 to sub). Fried chicken was very good- not too greasy. I do wish the sambal was spicier or they had more variety. Gado-gado was also a bit skimpy in terms of toppings - a lot of shredded lettuce and diced cucumber/tomato, and I was expecting chunky, blanched veg alongside the tofu/prawn crackers. This is a small counter serve shop. There are a few tables but the dining space is not very large. I had the rendang platter, beef skewers, and lupis. My food was delicious, flavorful, and fresh. The rendang (curried beef) had several chunks of fat to my disappointment. Also, the serving size didn't match the price (the portion wasn't very big). If you get hot easily, I recommend taking your food to go because the seating area was uncomfortably warm and the AC doesn't seem to work properly. read more

A new little Indonesian restaurant in La Frontera shopping center next to the Firebowl Café. Very small with only three or four tables. You order at the counter. The menu is very limited offering beef, pork, or chicken sate with white or yellow rice. I tried the beef sate with yellow rice. The plate came with a small salad, rice and the beef sate. The beef sate was very tough, but the yellow rice was delicious. The menu is too limited and needs to be expanded to survive. If you're looking for something new, try Sate Texas. read more

Bagus sekali! I was so excited when I found out Sate Texas opened a brick and mortar location. It was a bit of a drive for me from South Austin, but it did not disappoint. This newly open restaurant is family owned and very authentic. I tried the chicken and the beef sauté. The chicken satay was very tender and perfectly marinated. The beef's rich flavors with almost caramelized edges was so delicious. I really enjoyed their pickles and peanut sauce making me nostalgic about Indonesia. Right now, they are focusing on grilled chicken and chicken beef and pork sate. The owners shared that they will be adding rendang to the menu in the future. Looking to try something new. Give this place a shot. while their location is new (and doesn't have the sign up yet) they are not new to the game. Prior to opening this new location they were running a very popular food truck out of south Austin. It's mom and pop run. The owner is a sweet heart. Her and her husband are running the show with only one person helping. She was very attentive and caring. Just be patient with them. As for the food... it was excellent. Their skewers are were delicious. Today I tried the pork skewers, chicken skewers, and the yellow rice. The rice was aromatic and flavorful. Their skewers pork was sweet (just barely ... which is perfect) and savory and juicy. The chicken tastes a bit of the grill (in a great way) with a savory peanut sauce. The chili paste is spicy and pungent. (In the best way!!!) Just a heads up. I was excited about the concept but did not have a good experience here. I made the drive from Austin for lunch on a Sunday and ordered the grilled chicken skewer plate. I'd heard they have a yakitori charcoal grill, but my skewers were cold when they hit the table and so was the peanut sauce. I'm guessing, for cost-saving reasons, they grill a big batch of skewers at once, set them aside in the refrigerator, and then reheat them as customers order them. In addition to being cold, the chicken was dry and bland and the peanut sauce was thin and runny. Also, there was only one employee and he was taking orders and preparing the food so service was very slow. Overall, it was a disappointing experience and I won't be spending any more money here. read more

I really like the skewers - they're tasty and on the spot. However, portion is definitely on the smaller side. For $3 per skewer I was expecting a bigger size, also based on the photos I've seen on the site what I got seemed to be too small. Service was fast and attentive though. read more

I recommend this is the place if you want to try authentic Indonesian satay/bbq skewer. They have beef, chicken, pork and tempe (fermented soy bean cake) for vegetarian option. They also have bakso (Indonesian style meatball soup), kinda like pho. On the weekend, they have special menu that changes every week. Overall service was good. The downsides were: the meatball tasted starchy, the beef satay was hard/tough, and the chicken satay was small and mostly fat. Based on reviews and hype, we had a lot of expectations. We had waited for a long time since the launch in Nov 2024 to have kinks worked out. However we were disappointed in every aspect food, service (non-existant) and ambiance. We were there on a weekday afternoon about 1:30PM (post lunch crowd) and ordered the 5 sate meal. We paid for beef ($17.99) but asked for variety including chicken and pork since we wanted to try different items as it was our first time. We also ordered Bakso; the meatball soup. It took almost 30 minutes to get food served; there were two other tables ahead of us, 3 people. It seems they had to wait for a while too. Everything is self service including water / drink fountain. We asked for extra soup spoon and a plate since we were sharing. Never got extra soup spoon and got a metal bowl for sate! Our sate entre was served on a desert plate. Some other tables were served on a full dinner plate and seemed like more quantity too. Everything was inconsistent as if they launched yesterday! Food was OK. Some sate were good and authentic but chicken was chewy and not done enough for my taste. Soup broth was flavorful but noodles were overcooked and veggies too crunchy. The meatballs are finely ground meat; no texture. May be that is how Indonesian meatballs are but they had very little flavor or seasoning. I definitely had better Indonesian food before. Ambiance expectation was not much but there were still tables not cleared after guests leaving. Overall was really looking forward to having a good Indonesian restaurant in Austin but execution errors (even after six months of opening) really put damper on the experience. I tried this place, and I didn't like it. I love Indonesian food, so I was excited to come here. I was searching for a local food place that sold cendol. My significant other and I tried the beef skewers, meatball soup, and cendol. I'm going to be very honest and say that I really did not enjoy the food. It was average at best, but it really didn't taste like authentic Indonesian food. It tasted like the dishes were kinda thrown together but the spices weren't there. The cendol was the worst actually. The syrup was SO sweet and the cendol pieces disintegrated when I drank it. It was pretty unpleasant and after like 3 sips I was done. The beef was extremely tough and hard to chew. The spices were better there, although it was too tough to chew through all of it. Pretty disappointing, but I appreciate the effort. I might come back next year to see if there has been any changes. I probably won't be back sooner. read more
