I picked up dinner on my way to the supermarket on Friday, and while it was not quite the Indonesian food I remember from Bali, it still hit the spot. The three dishes were very filling for two people and felt like great value overall. The nasi goreng had a lovely wok hei and nicely separated grains of rice with a slightly firm texture, which I really liked. The seasoning leaned a little sweeter and tangier than I expected, almost slightly Thai-inspired, but the small side of shrimp paste added a welcome layer of heat and depth. The mie Jawa was a bit bolder in flavor than the fried rice and very satisfying at first bite. It did get a little rich after a while, but the pickled cucumbers on the side balanced it out well. The satay was the surprise standout for me. I was worried it might be dry, but the meat was tender, lightly juicy, and grilled just right. The peanut sauce was especially good: smooth, well-balanced, and full of flavor without being too heavy. Service was also very solid. Even though I was only picking up takeout, the staff were friendly, efficient, and the whole process was smooth. One of the best Thai restaurants around. It is very affordable and has great dishes. We ordered different types of satays, noodles and rice dishes. We ordered the fish special, which is only available over the weekends. Everything was delectable. This is not your average Thai place. It is authentic and run by a Thai chef and his family. It was my first time trying Indonesian food but was very surprised at how much options and how familiar the items were. Staff were helpful with explaining the menu items and the interior is almost like a cute little cafe. There's a little neon light you can take selfies at but the position of the garbage cans in front ruins the vibe so if you're trying to post something cute on socials it's kinda impossible Lol I'm a fan of southeast Asian flavour and this was a nice introduction to something new. A surprisingly amazing little spot in an unexpected area, this has become my new favorite place in the city! Very friendly service from beginning to end. The atmosphere was pleasant and not very loud, the seats were more comfortable than they looked and two hours passed by very quickly. We had Chicken Gulai, Mixed Skewers, Steamed Rice, and Tofu Spring Rolls.... all were extremely delicious and I don't normally like tofu... the spring rolls are well seasoned and delectable. There aren't many Indonesian restaurants in Toronto, and of the one that exists, I think Satay Sate is a hidden gem that everyone should try. My wife is Indonesian and she comes here for the food, which she finds very authentic and reminiscent. We ordered the Bubur Ayam (chicken porridge), Nasi Kuning Combo (yellow tumeric rice with rendang and fried chicken), Pempek (fried fish cakes), Cendol (Pandan jelly with coconut milk and palm sugar), and the Bakwan Jagung (corn fritters). The food was fresh, flavorful, and reasonably priced. The Bubur Ayam was especially comforting - the porridge (congee) was silky smooth and combined with the peanuts and garlic crackers, it had an amazing texture and taste. I would highly recommend everyone try this dish out, which is only available on the weekend. I also enjoyed the Cendol - I have a sweet tooth and this drink hit the right spot. Cold, sweet with a bit of chewiness from the jelly, it went down very well with the rest of the meal. Satay sate is an unexpected find in a mostly business offices and care dealership area near Fairview mall. We have been three times since we discovered the restaurant and have enjoyed every meal that we have had here. A continual favorite is the Ayam Penyet (a smashed fried chicken with chili sauce) and recent standout was the Nasi Bakar (rice steamed in banana leaf with chicken). Their sambal has become a household staple, so definitely try it and buy a jar to go home with if you like it! The owner is super friendly and likes to come out to chat with customers at the end of the night. My cousins came over to my house thinking that a family party was taking place. However, they were off by a week, and to make them feel better I brought them to one of their favourite places to eat. Since I had a big lunch earlier I decided to eat something light for dinner and ordered the tempeh satay with a side of white rice. You get 2 decent size skewers of tempeh with peanut sauce. It was good, but next time I think I will order extra peanut sauce as I felt it was not enough for the tempeh. I've been spoiled with real Javanese, Indonesian and Malaysian food since childhood, growing up in Cape Town. I still cook Cape Malay and Javanese food at home. The ayam bakar was ALMOST the most authentic item here except that the Indonesian flavor was not pronounced and almost bland. Krupuk were good and may have been imported (can't be sure). The lumpia were undercooked and flavorless, and the nasi goreng too was quite disappointing with dry chicken pieces and cold clumps of rice. No Indonesian flavour that I was so craving. To be fair, I haven't had much Indonesian food before so I don't have much to anchor from generally found the food we got to be interesting and tasty for the most part. The food did come out a bit slow and I found that some of the food wasn't quite hot enough. The tofu and tempeh sate were cooked well but I found the chicken sate to be a bit overcooked and dry. Satay Sate is AMAZING! I've been here multiple times and always enjoy the food. It's soooo delicious! Every time I come I have the Nasi Kuning which offers rendang beef, friend chicken, and a spicy vegetable salad served with delicious golden rice. It feels super authentic. The service is always really friendly as well, super warm and welcoming. The restaurant is situated beneath office/condo buildings, so the street front is a bit quiet - but there are some other restaurants nearby. Overall, the interior is neat and clean. Satay Sate offers halal Indonesian food that is made from scratch and tastes 100% authentic (like the dishes that you'd actually get in the country). The location of the restaurant might seem a bit out of the way, but it's near Fairview Mall and right off of Highway 401. There is free parking for restaurant patrons at the parking garage next door. They give you the free parking coupon after your meal. The interior is brightly lit and has a very casual but relaxing ambience. I like the wooden tables, giving the place a bit of a rustic yet modern appearance. You can make reservation ahead of time by calling. Service is excellent - very courteous and friendly staff. Although their menu is not very big, all the dishes served are DELICIOUS. The seafood options (Balinese grilled fish, grilled shrimps, and ikan woku) are only available on weekends. They also have a few other weekend specials as well, such as nasi bakar (spicy rice wrapped in banana leaves). The gado-gado and Balinese grilled shrimps are my favourite dishes here. Gado-gado has a good mix of vegetables, and is very hearty and filling from the egg, tofu, boiled potatoes, and super tasty homemade peanut sauce. The tempeh sate comes as a pretty big chunk of tempeh (even for just 1 skewer), and the peanut sauce that comes with it is heavenly. The Balinese grilled shrimps are well done. The shrimps are butterflied and partially de-skinned, so it's easy to eat. They have the charred grilled mark and taste. The ikan woku, a traditional curry fish dish from Manado (capital city of the Indonesian province of North Sulawesi), is best eaten with rice (whether it be white rice, coconut rice, or the fried rice). We ordered the nasi goreng (fried rice) with tempeh, and it comes with acar (diced cucumber and carrot) and fried egg that still has a runny yolk. Totally worth coming here for! Portion sizes here are like the typical Asian family sizes - great for sharing. Satay Sate lives up to its name, with its signature dishes (the sate / skewer selection) being one of their best dishes. It's the homemade peanut sauce that makes everything so tasty. If you're looking for something sweet and refreshing, I recommend trying the cendol (traditional Indonesian drink with pandan, mung beans, and jelly in coconut milk and ice). I originally came here in 2020 right before COVID hit after hearing great things. Literally, I was there the night before the first lockdown. I was really blown away by how good the service and food were. The lady working the register at the time was very friendly and helpful. I got the chicken and beef sate entrees with coconut rice. The satay sauce was amazing and the coconut rice was very fragrant. I would have given it five stars. Two years later, I returned after a couple years of lockdown and COVID. Things seem a little different this time. Not the same staff was working and service was a little slow. There was only one other table and the food came out pretty slowly... They have martabak manis (sweet pancake) on weekends but you need to order by Friday since the dough needs to rise. It's just a perfect match with the curry beef. Ayam Goreng (score: 5/5) It came in about 5 pieces of chicken. The outside was crispy and the inside was moist and tender. In the side there's a small cup with Chili sauce. It gave more excitement to the taste of the chicken. You may ask why would I give 4 stars only if the two food items I ordered received a perfect score. Indonesian food is probably one of my all-time favourite food worldwide, especially the delicious sate ayam with nasi goreng. Funny enough, the taste always brings me back to the time I backpacked in the Netherlands in 2016. I was getting really tired of the deep-fried seafood there so I opted-in the local Indonesian cuisines and oh boy they were absolutely delicious (especially after a joint). The flavours of coconut, grilled meat and peanuts flourishing on my taste buds juxtaposed my visits to different historical buildings & talking to the Javanese diaspora on that trip, learning about the brutal history of colonialism in South East Asia and how they ended up in the Netherlands. Thank you to all the lovely Indonesian, and Javanese peeps living in the Netherlands that emancipated my taste palate from all the deep-fried stuff with mayonnaise, or else id end up eating striped waffles from Albert Heijn for the whole trip. Back to Satay Sate - I was delighted when I walked past Satay Sate & decided to give it a shot. I was greeted passionately by the lady at the front desk, and they walked me through the menu. The acar is nice and refreshing - good way to cut the richness of the sate peanut sauce. Chicken sate was grilled fresh however it was a bit dry. Peanut sauce that comes with the sate is really good - they're def not stingy wit da sawwwce. The sambal or hot sauce thing is super delish! It has the right amount of heat, with a bit of sweet and sourness. Nasi Goreng Indonesian Fried Rice - Comes with a fried egg, chicken chunks, acar, salad, and sambal. Honestly, no clue what nasi goreng is supposed to taste like. But this was good, not amaaaazing but just good. Like Chinese fried rice except drier and sweeter (probably from the sweet soy sauce). Chicken was a bit dry but the fried egg still had a runny yolk centre! Star of the show here: SAMBAL. It was actually so good. They should put a jar of this on the menu cus I would totally buy some to bring home. We came during the lunch hour and it wasn't very busy... no line up at all. Food takes about 10 mins to come out so it's a good choice for all you office workers in the area! Overall, pretty decent!
