Garment is a sought-after designer vintage shop in Austin. Located on South Lamar, the shop offers a carefully curated collection of high quality women's vintage pieces. The selection embodies fashion forward vintage including well preserved and visually appealing garments. Garment has a boutique rather than a thrift shop persona. I like that clothing was loosely hung on the racks for ease of perusing the items. Bailey, the sales representative, was super patient and kind. She happily showed me anything I wished to see in the store particularly those pieces that were under lock and key. She also offered to reach out to a jewelry designer for different ring sizes...so kind of her. Garment Modern + Vintage is a great destination vintage aficionados and fashion enthusiasts. Found one item! Bailey put it in a beautiful box and bag...very nice touch! While I used a little of my credit today, I still have more to spend.

I reached out to owner Kelley Rytlewski in advance as a courtesy, when we could have simply walked. Her response was to tell us not to come to her store. Her reason was that she didn't want us taking up space for "real" customers. No explanation beyond that, no alternative offered, even after I responded to her question about whether or not the Girl Scouts would be spending money at her store. (Yes, she actually asked me that. My response was that they were all instructed to bring $30 but it was up to them to choose to spend it at her store or not.) As someone who reached out in good faith, I found the interaction dismissive and unwelcoming. The customer experience was a stark contrast to the warm, community-focused image the business owner projects. If you're a school group, troop, or youth organization looking for a welcoming community partner and experience in Austin, I'd look elsewhere. Imagine being a female owner of a community-focused business and NOT partnering with Girl Scouts. Mind blown. If you have young kids, I wouldn't recommend bringing them here. As soon as we walked in, my two-year-old accidentally stepped in front of the employee, and her reaction was surprisingly rude. She immediately told me she was overstimulated and doesn't like kids in the store. She said he could sit on the couch but wasn't allowed to walk around. I understand setting boundaries if a child is being disruptive, but we had literally just walked in, and he wasn't misbehaving.... just being a toddler. I explained that he's only two and it's not realistic to expect him to sit still the entire time. After that, she gave me a dirty look and continued to stare at us while I tried to shop, even though I kept him right by my side the whole time. In the end, we decided not to spend our money somewhere that made us feel so unwelcome. It was disappointing, especially since we were looking forward to supporting local shops. Just a heads up for other parents this may not be the most kid-friendly place, and you might not feel comfortable shopping there with little ones.
