WHAT HAPPENED??!! I first ate at this restaurant 3 years ago on a trip through Florence, and had such a wonderful meal that I couldn't wait to come back here with my wife on our honeymoon. It is no exaggeration to say that this was possibly the worst meal we had in Italy, and without a doubt the sourest note on an otherwise fantastic trip.
After deciding to try the bistecca alla fiorentina (expensive but worth a try), we asked for the smallest cut possible (price is by weight, we weren't extremely hungry and were ordering other dishes to sample). The waitress informed us that they could not do less than 1kg. After explaining all of the above (plus the fact that my wife is just physically incapable of eating more than a few bites of steak and just wanted a taste), we reluctantly agreed to accept a much larger piece than we had wanted. I also say reluctantly because we chose not to argue with the waitress's questionable claim that a "normal" person eats close to 1.8kg of meat (so even 1kg would anyway be too small for us). Despite the already growing negative vibe we were getting, we wanted to try it and I had such fond memories of the restaurant, so we stayed.
After patiently sitting through the waitress's education regarding the "proper" weight of steak that one should order, I asked for a glass of the house wine. (I'm actually very much a wine lover, but one of the things I have always found charming about Tuscany is the relative quality of some of their simplest house wines). As such, I didn't appreciate having to explain my wine credentials to the waitress who insisted that I really should order a bottle of Brunello - I'm quite familiar with Brunello, but not what I was looking for here. But I guess I must have annoyed her by choosing the cheap option. Finally, when asked what side dishes we would like with our 1kg steak, we again said that we just wanted to sample, and did not need any side dish. Another dirty look from the waitress as she rolled her eyes and grabbed the menus before retreating back to the kitchen.
First arrived the bruschetta, one of my fondest memories here from years back. What happened?? The bread was burned, hard as a rock (obviously old), the white beans were completely tasteless, and the tomatoes were the worst I've ever had in Italy. These were bland, tasteless, and possibly on the level of any number of fast food Italian restaurants back in the states. Next came the steak, an enormous uncooked steak that should feed 4 people. Now I love a beautiful rare steak, but this meat was blue (and still cold). When I pointed this out to the waitress, she told me that bistecca is always served very undercooked, but after taking a look at what we were served, offered to have them cook it a bit more. When we finally got the steak back, it was so burnt to make it inedible. We tried to suffer in silence, but simply could not manage more than a few bites of this heavily chrarcoaled, dry mammoth mess. Accepting that this place was just a mistake and willing to cut our losses, I asked for the check. And, sure enough, a different waitress presents a bill for a much larger steak than we ordered. When I told her the whole history above (and that, if a larger steak was all they had, they could have at least let us know so that we had an option), she simply said that the other waitress had left so there was nothing really she could do. They finally did deduct a few euros off the bill, so I guess that's something.
Really not sure what to say. Maybe we ordered the wrong things. But I will never be going back. And it's such a shame, as I've waited for years to return. read more
