Very average quality Italian restaurant. I ordered the Penne all'Amatriciana e Parmigiano (14 GBP), which was basically just a bowl of average penne with lots of overly salty tomato sauce. There was barely any bacon in there. When they added the parmesan on top, they didn't even ask me how much I wanted. Not much else to say about the pasta considering there wasn't much else in there. The staff were not particularly friendly either. Upon entering, there was no one there to greet us for a while. Then, in a very rushed manner, one of the guys hurried us to the downstairs area to point us to our table and tell us we only had an hour to eat (he left before we even got seated). I understand they were busy at the time and I am glad we didn't have to wait long even on a weekend night, but still, would have been nice if he was more welcoming. At least the service speed was decent. Also, there was a good amount of seating between the ground floor and basement level. The interior is a sort of plain Italian restaurant style. So overall, I was not that impressed by the food or the service here, which is why I am giving 3 stars. read more

Came by for dinner and the dining rooms were packed. They were able to seat us without a reservation. With that said, the service was lacking. Came here with my buddy and his friend. I'd been here before a few years ago, and remembered the food as good. This time we ordered a few pizzas for variety, and a bottle or two of wine. The restaurant itself is very busy, with lots of staff and patrons stepping over each other to get where they need to. This kind of detracted from the meal as our table was centered in the midst of all the foot traffic. The pizzas themselves are thin crust, if not a little more oily than I'd like. Their simplest pizza -- The Margherita -- actually turned out to be the best-tasting one for me. Simplicity refined, and in the best way possible. Fantastic find in Covent Garden. The unassuming front doesn't do justice to the sinful surprise inside. The homemade pasta and superbly simmered sauces were exquisite. The sausage and cheese atop were lightly charred to perfection. I savoured every bite. My companion's ravioli was delicious with a light, creamy sauce and fresh ricotta on the side. This restaurant was recommended by Italian friends as the most authentic they've had in London. The experience exceeded my expectations. The salad was a bit disappointing- it had lots of fresh lettuce, mozarella and some sun dried tomatoes but wasn't dressed and tasted bland. But everything else was terrific. Wow! Delicious authentic Italian food right in the heart of London. The pizza, the pasta, the appetizers, all sublime! One thing to be aware of is that this place is really busy. A reservation is definitely recommended. I got lucky and came early right before the rush of dinner service to grab a table. I got the linguini gamberoni & cozze (linguini with prawns and mussels). It was absolutely delicious! An awesome seafood pasta that had really fresh prawns and mussels. We also ordered some white wine and calamari as an appetizer. Everything was well done and tasted awesome! It can be quite loud inside and the seating is tight, but I think it's worth it to stop by this authentic place. All I can say is there are a number of Italian restaurants around the same area, but I'm not disappointed at all for the choice we made. With a friendly group of employees and quite the extent of a menu, I enjoyed my whole experience. From the grilled vegetables, and garlic pizza bread to start, to my Calzone,I enjoyed it all. I would love to come back again to try their other dishes but I will be leaving soon. So I will leave it up to you to decide. read more

This quaint Italian joint is just around the corner from the exceptionally crowded Dishoom restaurant. The food was as expected, not phenomenal but still pretty good. My view of the gnocchi was biased, however, due to my previous experience with gnocchi being in Italy. The sauce was excellent still with pieces of basil strewn throughout. It was a nice evening, but the service seemed to be lacking a bit. We would wait for a very long time before being attended despite having them walk near us or even right next to us many times. Also, maybe a silly addition, but if you are not interested in paying for water ask for tap rather than still or sparkling. Overall a nice evening and would recommend. read more

We were nearby in Piccadilly Circus and were craving Italian so we decided to come here after seeing all the great reviews after a quick google search. Thankfully it was only a 5 min walk from where we were and we didn't have to wait to be seated. To start off, we got a margherita pizza to share. The pizza itself was delicious but a bit on the cool side (tasted like maybe they forgot to bring it out right after it was finished cooking). I really like how they cut the pizza in half and served it on two different plates as they knew we were sharing. I also love the chilli oil, it was very tasty and had just the right amount of spice. For our main, we both got the Scialatielli Melanzane e Provola (which translated is pasta with aubergine, cherry tomatoes and smoked mozzarella). I thought it was ok (not the best but definitely not the worst. Probably could've used more salt) but the other person wasn't crazy about hers and left back more than half of her meal. When the waitress came back to collect our plates and asked if she would like to take hers to go as there was obviously a lot of food left back unfinished, the waitress should've asked if everything was okay after she said she didn't want to take home the leftovers. The meal in general just had a weird aftertaste which I later found out was the smoked mozzarella (which I probably won't order in the future anywhere I go as it clearly didn't agree with my taste pallet). I really don't understand customer service in Europe...is there a such thing!? We couldn't split the bill even though we asked right at the beginning soon after sitting down, we had to literally raise our hand to get someone to initially take our order, and a gratuity was already applied on our bill for only two people dining (which maybe explains the less than average service. Why try for a tip if it's already included, right?). Maybe if I was a native European, this wouldn't be such a shock to me but in North America, customer service is amazing. If you don't like your food no matter how much you eat of it, you can always take it back; if a server clearly sees you didn't enjoy your food they will inquire about it and get you something new to eat; gratuity is only applied to large groups of at least six or seven people, and if that's the case you will always be told beforehand; servers often check up on you to see how your meal is tasting and sometimes a chef/owner/manager of the restaurant will personally come by your table to see how your experience is going; etc. Needless to say, coming from Canada to England, the service is very under welcoming (and it's not just England, it's Europe in general). There is nothing worse than a poor attitude. There is simply no need for it, nor is there any excusing it. Especially if you work in hospitality! Note that I am asking not asking for all smiles all the time, but if a customer (operative word being customer) tells you that they are not happy with something, sighing, huffing and puffing is not acceptable. I ordered the octopus with rocket to start, followed by the sea bass. When my starter arrived it was covered in parsley. Now, I hate parsley, but I didn't complain as I just assumed that I had missed that on the menu. I remember seeing that parsley was in some of the main dishes, so I specifically took extra care to order a main that didn't have any. Low and behold when my main arrived, I'll give you one guess as to what was used as the garnish? Yep, you guessed it, that evil tasting green herb. I can hear you asking, '"why didn't you just put it to one side?" Reason being, because it was chopped into sand size particles and it wasn't just around the edge of the bowl, but it had infected the tomato sauce too! I informed the waiter of my dislike (hate) for the green goblin and he said something along the lines of 'just eat around it.' "I will not just it around it!" I thought to myself Would you ask Superman to just skirt around a pile of kryptonite? I think not! Why I had to explain myself further I don't know, but still, I was made to justify myself so I went on to explain that I had not complained about the 'evil' in my starter, but I was unwilling to endure it for a second time. This is where the huffing and puffing started and with the roll of his eyes he took the plate away. Honestly the dish wasn't that great anyway but perhaps I just ordered the wrong things. I've passed by this restaurant several times on my way to Chinatown and I"ve always dismissed it thinking it's one of those touristy Italian restaurants like L'ulivo in Leicester sq. I was meeting a group of friends for dinner one night as they heard it was quite good. Sartori has one of those menus where they have almost too many selections which made it really difficult to decide what to get. I was so set on getting pizza because it looks so good but decided to get the homemade pasta with seafood. It was really good - good amount of fresh seafood. I tried a bite of the tuna pizza (no cheese!) which was also really good. Definitely would consider going back to try some of the other dishes! read more

Went here with a small group of friends (one of them being Italian and had previously visited several times). Have to say I was very impressed with the food. We had the Scamorza (smoked mozzarella in breadcrumbs) and Involtini (aubergine and mozzarella in sauce) for appetizers. They were amazing! I could have easily had 2 of these and been fully satisfied. For mains I had the ear pasta with broccoli and Italian Sausage. It was different to what I normally eat for pasta and really enjoyed it. Filly and flavorful and didn't feel too indulgent. Others had the gnocchi in tomatto sauce and mozzarella. Also amazing but an insane amount of cheese, so make sure you're hungry as this one's very filling. The Bolognese also was amazing and came with equally impressive Pappardelle noodles. The service was friendly and down to earth. Very welcoming, although a few staff aside from our waiter were a bit frazzled and couldn't be bothered with our inquiries. No big hit however. Also we had reservations on a Saturday at 7:30. When we arrived they were nearly full but a few open tables here and there. By the time we left the queue was massive! Not sure if these were all walk-ins or reservations that had backed up, but word to the wise make a reservation if you're coming on a weekend night. Overall this was a very impressive Italian style joint and I'm eager to come back to try some of the non-pasta mains or even their impressive pizza offerings (which include pizzas up to a Meter long!!). read more

Had the parpardelle with mushrooms, courgette, and cream. It was delicious but on the heavy side. My friend ordered a pizza and we shared the bruschetta. All in all, a fantastic meal. Their pizza seems to be the most popular item, and the crust is delicious. My biggest complaint is just that they completely forgot my dish, so we had to wait an extra long time for them to put in the order after the rest of the food had already come out. Also, service is completely slow. The staff are more than friendly! The range of pizza options is more than enough to satisfy everyone and you can order a few different options of pizza toppings if you do order the pizza by the meter so it is near impossible to not please the entire crowd. I do not know what toppings I ended up trying as I think we ordered almost every one across the numerous meters of pizza that the group ordered. Even stuffed to the brim with all the pizza I found some room to split a desert with a fellow diner and it was not a mistake! The atmosphere of the restaurant was inviting and while crowded made for a great night out with friends both new and old. And the tables are well set up for the long slabs of pizza, with plenty of room for plates and drinks with the pizzas occupying the elevated center spot on the table. Overall I highly recommend this place and with it's central location it makes for a great meal out in London whether as the highlight of the night or as a pre-show meal. read more

Sartori is a superb new Italian joint, opened October 2010, in the heart of the theatre district in London's West End. I love pizza. By that, I mean I hate Pizza Sexpress, can't stand Deep Bland Pizza, abhor Pizza Slut, can't be arsed with Ask, and please don't get me started on how Dodgy Domino's has single-handedly bastardised the concept of pizza and turned it into the Divine Brown of the UK Pizza scene. ("You're hungry, you say? And you have no soul? Here, use my Domino's Calling Card! You can find them in most phone booths around town! It will feel great at the time and they will deliver straight to your door!") Truth is, Brits just don't get pizza. The idea that there exists this unspoken hierarchy of quality that differentiates Ask from Pizza Express from Pizza Hut is absolutely bonkers. Fact is they are all lowest-common-denominator, hen-do-serving chain restaurants whose sole purpose is to shovel out food that is marginally above adequate according to the British palate (and we all know what that means), thus making the most profit possible. It's how Tesco and Starbucks operate, and the discerning foodie should shun them not because they are all corporate and evil like, but because they have forgotten what it means to do things that make you smile. Sartori, this lovely cosy and sophisticated little restaurant in central London, is the perfect antidote to the above. If I tell you that this restaurant transported their pizza oven piece-by-piece directly from Naples and reconstructed it in their basement (no expense spared: the whole thing cost a cool £18k), you might correctly assume that they also shipped-in chefs from Naples to operate the beast as well. And if you know a thing or two about the average food ethic of a chef in Naples, and the commitment they have to the art of making pizza, you might start to understand that you are in for a rare treat. Actually I first heard about this place when I was looking at reviews of my favourite new coffee house nearby, Notes Music and Coffee, who have probably the most expensive and sought-after espresso machine currently in the world. Sartori was noted in the same piece as having the Maserati of pizza ovens. I had to investigate. I had to see it for myself. A quick look downstairs at this oven, and a chat with a waiter, confirms this is indeed the Maserati of pizza ovens. The waiter actually compared it to a Ferrari, but the point is that this restaurant is sufficiently geeky about the construction of a pizza to employ pizzaioli who know exactly what they are doing. Their menu proudly states "please refrain from asking for a variation of toppings; our pizzaioli are experienced in the art of combining ingredients"... and my Pizza Napoletana was the evidence. Each new mouthful tasted different to the last, each made me go 'wow', and without wishing to gush too much, each mouthful made me further resolve to tell all my friends about this place. If pizza isn't your thing, there are numerous other dishes from Naples to get excited about. Although the aspirations are high, this is a humble restaurant. The service is smart and friendly, the decor is classy, the atmosphere is intimate, and the prices are astonishingly low given its location. When you visit, you absolutely must go downstairs and take a look at the oven. The chefs might stare at you like you are a bit strange, but it's a thing of beauty. It has an integrated area for storage of wood. What's not to love? A great place for a date or a meal with good friends, and it won't break the bank. If you fancy a coffee pilgrimage at the same time, visit Notes Music and Coffee just down the road (open late). read more

Went on a Saturday night, for the first time. It was very busy, but yet there was one table for two magically open. The people after us might have had to wait. It was too loud at this time for my taste (as was the entire block) but the food more than made up for it. We ordered the pasta bolognese and the vegetarian pizza (eggplant, bell pepper, zucchini). Both were delicious! My only tip is the oil on the pizza had pooled a bit, too much oil for me, but delicious. The pasta sauce tasted like homemade sauce and the crust was like it is in Italy. Absolutely blown away by the incredible flavors of the wood-fire oven baked pizza! Walking around like a typical tourist decided to grab lunch somewhere near Leister Square, this place is slightly hidden from the main touristy area (thank god) with 4 of us we decided to split the 3/4 meter pizza which was the perfect size as we were starving! The place feels classy with the business lunches going on around us and the wide variety of wines looked very tempting for a tasting at noon. In London for two weeks and mostly dime out. On April 3 we went to the restaurant, we were greeted and sat sat at the back. We immediately ordered a bottle of wine. And we're totally ignored for over an hour. Some patrons that got seated much later got their meals and finish eating. There was only one waiter that took order, we tried even ask his servers to get his attention. Hello ked at our table and continue to ignore us. We were seated by their wine racks,he made few trips to get bottles,short of grabbing his sleeve I tried in vain. Finally I looked around and only our table have a colored person. I finally went to the counter asked for the bill for the bottle, he still kept me waiting and seat a table then asked me if no one came to take our order. I pointed to him that he was the only waiter that took the orders. He said sorry here is your bill and try to charge gratuity after making eye contact was removed. Large open windows and a glass facade welcome you into this cute little Italian bistro, where service was prompt and the mood bright and warm, despite the rain pouring outside. As a group, we were set on pizza, and we were informed that were we to have our pie baked 'by the meter' we could have just a little bit more, as they would be square and conjoined by their ends as the slab cooks together in their massive oven. We were inspired by this suggestion and gave the ol' thumbs up, and out they came with long wooden shelf with our pizza, merrily changing from one set of toppings to the next. The ingredients were fresh, the sauce was rich, tomatoey and not at all too sweet, oily or watery and the crust had a good crisp yet bready lip to it that let you hold it nicely and encouraged you to finish it all off. My only small complaint was that apparently one side of the oven is a little hotter than the other, so one crust edge caught a little too much heat and had a light sprinkling of brimstone taste to it. I'll go back.. especially for the sausage and greens pizza.. it's rare to find nice open chunks of proper sausage and not just thin slices of cured salami like everywhere else. read more
