We went here after visiting akshardham, tried the thali and dosa. I prefer Bangalore style dosa, but this was decent as well. However I felt sambar could have been better. This has been in our to-visit-list for some time and we finally gave it a shot, today. The place seemed a busy dining spot right from the outset with most of the tables full. We ordered the Puri and South Indian thali meals for dinner as we were famished after a long day of drive. The food ordering is pretty simple doing through a QR code scan, checking the menu on your smart phone and placing the order through the same. The food arrived promptly and was a delight to the eyes with its styling on the plate, right away. The food tasted authentically South-Indian and you can trust me on this as I'm bonafide enough and come from the same place as this restaurant's origin. Now to what made me rate this place only 3 stars. Dear business owner/manager, Do you know what makes some or most of the people who are originally from the state of Tamilnadu to come here and taste your food? It's because of the nativity and a sense of driving home. That cannot be offered just by the food alone but the type of music you play. I've experienced some other Saravana Bhavans playing the tunes or songs of Ilayaraja and that's the staple music we all have listened to and grown up with. What we turned out to listening was latest Bollywood numbers that are played in high volume and was literally noise to the ears. Imagine listening to a beautiful Tamil or Malayalam song in Patel Brothers or Mithaas, for a context. To top it all, the employees started sweeping the floors at 9:15 even before we were finishing our dinner. The sound wasn't pleasant at all and we had to abruptly stop our dinner. The person at the front desk was informed and the person who swept was honestly apologetic about the incident. Came here after six flags for dosa fix. Mango lassi good, Rosemilk real good! Buttermilk chaas got a spicy kick to it, very enjoyable in the summer time. Chana and rice as appetizer got our kids going, great mild start and filling portion. Thali comes with sambhar, coconut chutney, chutney , tomato garlic chutney. Don't you hate when you go to a place where they try to nickel and dime you on everything. $17 for an entrée and you've gotta pay $13.50 to get rice. Just include the damn rice in your price for your entrée. Ask for water and they give you a bottle of water and charge you for that. You're gonna spend a minimum of $30 per person. Food is decent so I can't complain there. It took a while to get our check after they gave us to go boxes. There were only five other tables being served so I don't understand why they didn't come over more often and sooner. They're charging prices as if you went to a high and white cloth table restaurant, but it's not. It's very bright inside like a cafeteria. read more

Although, this place had been around for a while it was our first time here. We weren't expecting much given the mixed reviews. We were craving Dosas and Saravana Bhavan had plenty to offer on their menu. We ordered a Masala Dosa and a Rava Onion Masala Dosa. These were some of the best dosas we've had. Perfectly made, fresh, crispy and the accompanying Sambar and chutneys were perfect. It far exceeded our expectations. Even my Indian mother couldn't stop raving on how good her Rava Onion Masala Dosa was. They have outdoor seating on the side patio and in front of the restaurant. I had ordered masala dosa and combination of Vada and idli. turned out to be most disappointing : dosa was served cold. tray/ thali had many little dented spaces for different chutneys which were difficult to scoop . sambhar had no taste . overall regretted having lunch there. similar with vada and Idli dish . Reached here on a Saturday at around 7.30pm - just in tie because right after us, several families entered and there was a long queue. They don't take reservations. The service was good and super quick! I've eaten at Saravana Bhavan in New York and the food at this one didn't match up to the NY one. Overall, I was quite disappointed. I've been here a few times in the past and sat inside pre pandemic and the food was Umazinging but ordering out and having it delivered just was a different experience overall and personally i found it a bit soggy and just not the same experience. On our road trip we decided to stop here for the brand name and with expectations that this will be some what similar to what we get in India. We were a party of 12 and were greeted well, seated and provided menus. We ordered our Appetizer - cauliflower 65 , paneer 65, plantain bajji , masala vada . I Will tell this only cauliflower 65 was okay , rest all was either oily or was not made per traditional way. Moving on to main course vegetable parrota was okay seasoned too much , all dosas we ordered were awesome ( chocolate dosa , ghee dosa , Mysore dosa , Mysore masala dosa ) , mini idli and sambar vada stood out awesome too. When no other Indian restaurant was open on a Monday this place saved the day. Clean space and courteous staff! Food was excellent and authentic. I'm not Indian but my girlfriend is and she'll be the first to tell you what's wrong. She was oohin and ahhin as much as me. We go to other sarabanvans in Edison and nyc and they're not as good as this one was on this fine day. The dosa idli and vada were lovely and the chutneys were divine. Got take out for the aunties and uncles which they seem to do a whole lot of. They clearly leveled up during the pandemic. Well, it was a waste of an evening/dinner. To start with, they don't serve water when you seat at the table. You need to ask for it. The response comes like, "only bottled water, at a charge". Huh? Food was average, I would say a bit below average. I ordered Buttermilk, Sambhar vada, medu Vada Sambhar, Poori, chappattis and Subji. Coffee was okay but for that small cup I find $4.00 atrocious. When I asked for bill, he says, $45. I asked, don't you give a bill/check? Response comes, "I can read it for you" and then, he swipes the card and stands and stare at you as to what percentage tip you give. I see quality issues (in food), process issues (water, billing), hospitality issues (not one friendly word/smile). In summary, this place has changed for the worse. Sad. The special meal! Goddamn! I was truly blown as a foreigner, excuse me here, but probably homely for indian ppl (I guess), I loved the korma, appalam, poori, and the sambar soooo much! The potato in there is even better than the potato in masala dosa. I learned that not everyone loves korma, but yo girl here is definitely a korma kinda girl. The sweet is malai, and it's satisfying. Mango lassi is very lassiy so yeah, it's perfect. All in all, recommend, recommend, recommend. If you are here to search some of the true taste of south India, and you don't care that much about anything else, yas. However if you are here for the experience, then don't. I personally think service isn't their strong suit. And the decor is not the best. I have seen people saying it's not good cuz of rude staff and all, for me they are very nice to us, always willing to help, probably cuz I'm with an India person, so it's really about what you value more. read more

Bad experience. They are taking advantage of covid and profiting from providing water also. Most of the places I know are giving bottled water for free if they are not serving water at the table. But saravna bhawan is charging 1$ each for a small bottle of water which you can get at wholesale stores for 40 bottles for 3$. For dine-in, it's the establishment responsibility to provide water, if due to covid they are proving bottled water, they should atleast not profit off it and keep it free or at cost price. Food quality, service and value for money is also going down for SB. We recently started going to the recently opened A2B on US-1 in princeton. Excellent interiors, good service and yummy South Indian food. Apart from yummy food, they are always offering to serve extra chutneys and sambhar with your meal which sadly SAravna is also pretty stingy on. Don't think we will return soon to this location soon. read more

Sarvana Bhavan is part of a chain of South Indian vegetarian restaurants with outlets around the globe. West Windsor is in (and has) good company. Their website talks of, "a synergy of taste and quality." I concur that the cuisine in this shop appears and tastes colorful, fresh and energetic. The décor is simple, without pretense. It is designed for efficiency, if not long term comfort. It is clean. The service is prompt, and the menu organized around the Indian breads you wish to eat.. That concept is unusual. It is obvious as the aluminum trays of food are served, that great visual cueing is paramount to the uniqueness of the product. You see the Dosa, Poori, etc., from across the room, before the veggies come into sight. They are oversized and dominant, while the curries and sauces are in small dishes not seen until the tray reaches your table. That works as long as the object of all eyes actually deserves the credit by tasting good. It succeeds. The variety of Indian oven doughy creations are really the stars of the show; served hot, fresh, light and tasty - the perfect tools to absorb the spicy flavors that come to complement the bread (clearly not the other way around here). It makes perfect sense when realizing that fingers are the way things are transported to the mouth in much of India. The variously textured breads scoop, pinch, fold, and spoon easily. Dexterity and sensitive digits are prized virtues. Not surprisingly, although the accompanying vegetarian dishes are well done, they are something of an afterthought with so much attention grabbing by the breads. My Potato and Cauliflower Curries were quite good, but came in very small portions - like butter and jam for your bread. The Uthappam with Onion and Chili was a tasty Frittata-like pancake; big, thick, rich and fun to rip apart and devour. It came with 4 small dishes of sauce in different shades of color and taste. All in all, Sarvana Bhavan delivers an enjoyable and entertaining lunch at a fair price. I am a bit unsure how long the novelty will work for me, and will return again as it is near my Jersey office. I am always on the lookout for a strong veggie meal alternative, and SB certainly is that. read more

When the mood for dosa strikes, I usually schlep out to Dosa Grill on 27, which has reliably served up tasty portions of those iconic South Indian rice crepes for years. My family and I didn't know about this location of Saravana Bhavan, a very popular chain of South Indian vegetarian restaurants in the motherland, until we serendipitously ate at Carlucci's next door. Since we craved dosa and this place is much closer to home for us, we decided to give it a shot for a recent Mother's Day dinner. The dining room was quite crowded, as expected on a holiday, so service ran a little slower than I imagine it usually does. That being said, no mistakes were made with our orders and the food came out fast. The dining room and kitchen themselves appeared tidy, and the ambiance feels a touch nicer here than at the typical cafeteria-style dosa joint. We started with the weekend special, off-menu Gobi 65 and the masala vada (chickpea fritters) as appetizers. The Gobi 65 tasted rather greasy and lacked the red chili/curry leaf depth of flavor I associate with a good 65 style dish. The vada lacked the excessive grease our other appetizer carried and tasted great with the restaurant's fresh coconut chutney. Our dosas, one off-menu paper dosa and 2 onion rava masala, arrived promptly thereafter. The dosas all had a little too much butter for my liking, but the crepes themselves hit the mark. Our rava dosas tasted slightly sweet and toasty, and their texture struck a good balance between lacy crisp edges and more tender inner bites. Ditto for the humongous paper dosa which barely fit on our table; it had a shatteringly crunchy texture with a fermented, sour kick from the batter. The chutneys served alongside all tasted fresh, and the mashed potato masala had plenty of spicy flavor to accompany the dosas well. Everything was going well until we got our bill. It turns out that subpar gobi 65 and the paper dosa each cost $12. These prices are quite high for this type of food, as most other places charge about $8 for either dish. Be careful about the prices of off-menu dishes. Similarly, expect to pay $2 or so more than you'd usually pay for comparable dosas. The food earns four stars, but the unnecessarily high prices bring the overall experience down to three. read more
