Just wrapped up a fantastic dinner! All four of us got completely different items and none of us left anything on the plate. What did we knock out? Pork chops, fried chicken, chicken tenders, and hamburger steak with sides of a baked potato, fried okra, French fries and baked beans. Stopped here on our way through to Laurel Hill Florida. It's a very small town feel. Felt comfortable walking in, like an old friend. Sweet tea was great! Food was good, it was a buffet with country cooking. Wish the food would have been hotter, but had something's that reminded of my grandmothers. The only down fall to for me was the price. We had a family dinner prior to a celebration of life service. Real southern soul food in my ancestral hometown. Stopped at brunch time. Had a great buffet with southern prepared veggies, fried chicken, catfish and the best pork chops I have had. Salad bar had a nice variety and there are a couple dessert options. They also provided a breakfast menu and lunch menu. My husband had the hand packed burger. Said it is terrific. If it wasn't for the exceptional server, I think we may have walked out before we even tried, and it got worse as we stayed longer. If you want drama, if you're looking for a bitter old grandma or two, or if you just want to taste some good old-fashioned lower Alabama food that is hard to identify from a buffet line, this is your kind of place. I am a bit of an adventurer, so I tried the buffet. It wasn't all that great to look at, but I decided to try it anyway. I can't really say that anything that I got from it was bad, but is was late in the afternoon and they could have had more selection than they did on the table. My wife decided against taking the challenge, and she ordered a simple cheeseburger. I ate mine first, since it was ready. Her burger came out a little later, not exceptionally later, but we got a little confused when one of the grandma cooks came out with a bacon cheeseburger, a cheeseburger, and a BLT. She came out of the kitchen yelling (and I mean YELLING like she needed a hearing aid) BACON CHEESEBURGER, CHEESEBURGER, then stopped when a kid at a nearby table said the Bacon Cheeseburger was hers. No one else claimed the cheeseburger right away, so I raised my hand for my wife, thinking it might be hers, sine she was seated looking at the wall. Grandma yelled again, this time CHEESEBURGER, BLT. Our server saw my hand and noticed I was trying to get granny's attention, but then came over and let me know it wasn't for us. She sensed I was surprised at the high volume of the cook-turned-server. She was also very nice, regardless of the rest of the crew that seemed like they really did NOT want to be there. I didn't get her name, but she seemed like the only one there who had any emotional intelligence. When it came time to pay for my meal, a buffet, two iced teas, and a cheeseburger with fries, I walked over to the place with the "Pay Right Here" sign (cute, but had I walked any farther I would have been standing in the kitchen), and one of the grandmas said: "Cheeseburger and fries, right?" I said yes, ma''am. She asked what we had to drink, and then asked if I had the buffet. For some reason, the bill came to exactly $32.00, which seemed a bit odd (and pretty high for what we had, but maybe she sensed a was an out-of-town person passing through who would not mind being overcharged). Not wanting to discuss anything further with either of the bitter grandmas, I handed over two twenties and smiled. When she handed me back $8.00 in change, all she said was: "the tip jar is right there (and pointed to it). Put your tip in there so you don't have to walk all the way back to the table." No THANK YOU...have a nice day...hope you enjoyed your meal...nothing!!! ***Some customer service, eh!?!?** My wife told me on the drive away that I should have handed the server the tip. She heard one of the screaming grannies ask the busboy if he put all of the tips from the tables in the jar, almost as if she were accusing him of stealing them. Yeah, I REALLY should have walked the 20 feet back to the table, or even slipped the tip in the hand of that outstanding server, who seemed to know that the behavior of the other people there was not very inviting or pleasing. Big R's fried squash is definitely out of this world. It's one of the best squash dishes that I have ever had. The gravy for the hamburger steak is awesome!!! I definitely recommend this small town restaurant with a wonderful country atmosphere. read more

I would have never given this hole in the wall a second glance but my mom and uncle swore by it. We got there just as they opened. Their food was hot and fresh. I would write a complete review but our experience was not much different than Ken T's below. (BTW, I don't know Ken, I just read his post). They seemed pissed when 5 of us came in for breakfast. No one in the place except 4 locals. Some of the food was so bad we couldn't eat it. We were also surprise when our bill, for eggs, was $53! The only reason they get one star is simply because of the fact I couldn't give them a quarter or half star. My wife and I both ordered the bacon cheeseburger. On the menu they had $6 for regular and $7 large. I ordered the large. So we both had bacon cheeseburgers with fries and a sweet tea. The burger was average, nothing special about it. When we went to pay the bill it was $28! Then the woman that rung us up began fussing that she had been sick and complaining to us that we got all the extra with it. ??? So our bacon cheeseburger with fries and sweet tea costed us $14 dollars each! My wife was ready to argue but I just wanted to get out of there. Avoid this place at all cost! I have never in my life felt so uncomfortable in a small town diner. My wife and I were passing through and decided for something different so we chose this place. They had a small buffet but we chose something from the menu. My wife wasn't very hungry but we both ordered the bacon cheeseburger with fries and a sweet tea and I ordered the large. The only thing large about my order was there was a few more fries with my meal than my wife's. The burgers were the same size as well as the tea and there wasn't anything special about either of them. The bacon had kind of an old taste to it so we took it off and didn't say anything. The young lady waiting on us was very friendly and courteous. When we started to pay the waitress told me to pay in the back in the kitchen. The menu had the regular for $6 and the large for $7. They also had a handwritten sign on the wall that stated a burger, fries and sweet tea for $6 as a special. I had a $20 dollar bill in my hand which should have been more than enough and when she told me $28 dollars I almost fell out. When my wife inquired about it the woman started fussing and complaining about all the extra we got on our burger. What? Lettuce and tomato? That's not the price on the menu. Then she said the fries and tea wasn't included in the meal so that put me paying $7 for a burger and $7 dollars for fries and a tea. She then started talking about being sick and then started fussing at her employees while we were standing there. She actually had her employees take down the handwritten sign while we watched and fussed about it being wrong when my wife brought it to her attention. Basically all we got extra was the bacon and I got a large. A bacon cheeseburger with fries and a sweet tea cost us $14 dollars each. My wife wanted to go back in there and get an itemized copy of our meal and what each item cost but I just told her I would rather go and never come back. OMG!!!!!!! The ONLY thing even worth mentioning about this place was our waitress, Pam!!!!! Our deplorable meal was one thing, but the owner, Sara, was a piece of work--loud, bullish, unprofessional, rude... We got there about one today and the buffet looked dried-out and old. They were out of so much, that I finally asked Pam "So, what DO you have???"..Pam repeatedly apologized....I ordered an entrée, only to change my mind when she said the vegetables came off the buffet---Several items sat on TOP of the steam table, as it was too small enough to accommodate the containers. Upon Pam asking the kitchen a question for me, the person YELLED the answer at her. I relunctantly asked about the club sandwich, only to change my mind upon learning the only meat on it is bacon. My choice of the Philly Cheesesteak was a mistake---processed cheese that wasn't even melted, an processed meat, frozen French fries. The only thing worse than mine was my boyfriends mushroom swiss burger--looked like crap that comes from a waste receptacle from a space shuttle...We eat at restaurants all over this region and have never had such a terrible, awful experience.our bill came to just over $30.00--worst meal EVER, worst dining experience EVER!!!!! read more
