Yum Pla Duk Fu Salad
Alison A.

Would definitely go again! Ordered as take out, the portions were massive. Definitely would recommend the moo ping skewers. Super flavorful and a great portion. The yum pia duk fu was so good and fresh.

I have been coming for years now and it changed so much over the years for the better. The service is on point and the food it's amazing and affordable. My favorite is the papaya salad hands down. The menu has lots of variety. The atmosphere is good, just an all around good experience. It does get really busy here so don't come hungry because there could be a wait.

Najwa G.

Do note that there will inevitably be await regardless of the day and time if you do not have a reservation, my sister and I went there on a random Tuesday at around 6 PM and had to wait a minimum of one hour. We both came with the goal of trying the popular spicy catfish mango salad. The service here was great which is always a plus. As for the dish, it was definitely very unique and I don't think either her or I have tried something like that before. However, it did feel a bit overwhelming at times and I questioned how much catfish was actually in the salad versus the breadcrumbs. I wouldn't be opposed to going here again, but it isn't worth an hour of a wait for me.

We ordered the mango salad and the pineapple duck curry. Even though we got medium spice for the salad it was pretty spicy lol but the mango really helped. It had a lot of crunch to it so was fun to eat although not my style of salad. The curry sauce was great. I wish the duck came with more meat; it was a lean cut. We were too full to order more but there's plenty of other things I would've wanted to try. Also their cocktail menu looked stellar - very unique and fun glasses + flavors. We waited ~45 min on a weekend with no reservation at around 2-3pm as an fyi!

Can't believe it took me this long to realize I could get Saranrom delivered. I've been missing out. If everything was this good delivered, imagine how much better it could be in person. Everything we ordered was delicious. Like mind-blowing. I could eat here regularly and the spice level was perfect. Yum pla duk fu salad or crispy fried shredded catfish with mango salad was a top favorite. The hoy todd or mussels pancake also had a lot of large mussels in it. I love raw shrimp and this was a winner as well. Khao soi curry was tasty, chicken super tender and fell off the bone. Boat noodle soup was good (though I surprisingly like a version of this more at another spot, don't kill me). I thought the beef was more chewy than I like. My friend got the purple lemonade and I got the island matcha. Both were refreshing. Definitely ordering again and hopefully in real life.

If you're craving authentic Thai flavors in Queens, @saranrom_nyc is definitely worth the trip From the warm hospitality to the incredible variety of dishes, everything here was packed with bold and balanced flavors without breaking the bank. One of the standout dishes was the Yum Pla Duk Fu Salad -- a Michelin Guide recommended favorite made with crispy fried shredded catfish, crunchy breadcrumbs, and a refreshing spicy mango salad. The combination of textures and flavors was unreal Another must-try is the Miang Kha Na, also Michelin Guide recommended. It comes with savory dried pork, lime, chili, and fresh Chinese broccoli leaves for wrapping. Every bite was fresh, tangy, spicy, and so satisfying. And don't skip dessert the taro balls were soft, comforting, and the perfect sweet ending to the meal.

A fellow foodie Sally W. suggested we try this local Thai place in Elmhurst, not knowing it is rated a Michelin Bib-Gourmand. I was so excited to try! Pushing through the crowds waiting for a table at the door, we secured a spot just beyond the doorway. Inside, it was very cozy and tight as far as seating. The restaurant dining room is really meant for single diners or pairs of people, as the room is not wide. Any group 4+ will be difficult unless you have a reservation and they planned for it. The menu has a lot of seafood, pork and classic Thai curry dishes. Those all caught my eye. It was hard to decide. The waiter was super friendly and all smiles. We asked for his recommendations between the dishes we were thinking of and his choices were spot on. If you are a fan of spicy/dishes with heat, there are plenty on this menu. I wanted to order a few but I was afraid to given the spice level couldn't really be adjusted on some. Started with the curry puff appetizer. It was really tasty, potatoes and onion as well as the curry powder flavor really came through on this. Delicious. For entrees, we tried the: - clams with basil sauce - packed with a mild chili paste heat in the sauce but stir fried to perfect consistency. Of the whole plate, a few clams didn't open so I tossed those. - duck panang - nicely roasted with crispy textured skin, paired with basil in a coconut milk and curry paste. Very delicious. - stewed pork leg, could've been more tender so it was a tad on the tough side. The soy sauce soup and boiled egg was good though. Drinks were very good, Thai Iced tea was not overly sweet. We opted to pass on dessert as the table we sat at was really meant for two but it was three of us. I felt a little too crammed in. I think I would've enjoyed the meal better if I had a more relaxed/leisure dining pace but they were really busy and too tight on space. I can see why it's a hidden gem and noted as a Bib-Gourmand. Prices are very fair and the food was really good. Very authentic.

Lunch Pad See Ew

Waited an hour on Friday afternoon for walk-in. I was excited to try the top Thai spots in NYC and on top of that a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant. Price-wise was excellent with most dishes around the $10-30 range. Portions were large and meant to be shared. As for the food itself, I honestly expected better. If it was ranking in the same leagues as Fish Cheeks, Pranakhon, and Bangkok Supper Club on Beli, I thought the taste would be phenomenal but it truly just tasted like any decent thai spot I could find in SoCal. The only difference is that in SoCal there would be little to no wait. I must clarify that my qualms is not with the restaurant but with NYC having an issue of overinflating certain places and establishing high expectations of otherwise normal restaurants just doing its thing. The pad see ew was my favorite, and I liked how wide and long the noodles were. Otherwise, their Michelin Yum Duk Pla Fu was just another mango salad to me, and I had wished that the catfish tasted more like fish than breadcrumbing. The green curry was decent, nothing special. Good price for what you get though. If the wait wasn't unnecessarily long, I would consider this a nice spot for cheap, yummy Thai.

Crispy pork with basil

Yum! Yum! Yum! All 3 dishes ordered were Yummylicious in its own way! The shredded catfish salad was amazing! 1st time ever eating catfish this way The crispy pork with basil and a side of rice was so comforting and nostalgic. The 3rd dish was unique and all the ingredients complimented each so well. All 3 dishes were made of fresh ingredients and medium spicy. Every dish was made with love and delivered with care. Saranrom Thai definitely deserves two thumbs up and my Yummylicious Stamp of Approval!

Drunken Noodles with Shrimp

First-time diner here although I did dine here when it was another Thai restaurant. The decor is similar to the one before, quaint and tidy. The space is ultra-cozy, if you will. When I arrived at 1pm, it was packed, almost bursting at the seams. I learned it was lunch hour and the prices were lower. But the kind hostess was able to accommodate me as I waited for my friend to arrive (and she did in less than five minutes). Our waitstaff--two young ladies and a young man were all incredible and welcoming. The food was some of the best Thai I have had and I know that may be a sweeping statement as I am smack-dab in the middle of "Thaitown" of Elmhurst, Queens. Go, check it out if you do not believe me...

Basil Fried Rice

This is the best Thai restaurant I've had in America! We went on Sunday around 230pm and waited about 20 minutes but right after us the line grew pretty long and was a 1 hour wait. The place is quite small. I've been chasing the raw shrimp ceviche flavors ever since I had it at a night market in Thailand and finally found a close 2nd here! It was a perfect balance of tangy and salty. They gave us a decent amount of shrimps. The tom yum soup had a kick (to the back of your throat to it even though we asked for mild. It was tasty. The basil minced pork was also delicious with the Thai omelette completing it really well! My partner got the intestine herbal soup and it was pretty good! I wasn't in the mood for it. I had some bites of it and it wasn't smelly at all. Thai iced tea was also good and as expected. A bit too sweet for me, I wouldn't order it again.

Pad Se Ew with fried egg and crispy pork
Charles T.

I ordered from the lunch menu. It was tasty, especially after adding hot chili sauce and jalapeños. However, the pork was hard to chew on and swallow so I ended up putting them on a napkin when I was done chewing on them. I was really longing for the mango sticky but it was not available so I went a couple of doors down to Pata - delish!

Had the $30 Branzino (didn't realize that it's fried. And that we had a choice between sweet chili sauce, mango salad, cashew cream sauce). The waitress didn't ask which one we wanted. Also had the $18 Crispy Watercress Kung Fu Salad. We were thinking of a duck dish (& I didn't see the Khao Soi - one either softshell crab that I've seen previously), but the couple next to us who's been there twice within the past 2 weeks recommended these two dishes. The salad was lightly battered vegetable, they used Water Spinach instead (big tuber fritters stuck together). The bowl of Seafood Salad (shrimp & calamari, kind of Thai ceviche-style) was OK but didn't have nuances in flavor (spicy sour sweet). The Liquid was deep at the bottom and it was hard spooning things on top of the vegetable. The presentation of the fish was gorgeous - came out on a fish-shaped platter on top of an little flame. The server poured the sauce over the fish and everything bubbled. There was cauliflower and string beans underneath the fish. Didn't realize that it was fried instead of broiled or grilled. We didn't know what sauce we were getting and at first I thought it was tiny bit sour, as I continued eating, it became like a one-note tamarind. Same - there wasn't any sweet sour spicy fishy. We asked for medium-spice when we ordered. It's a little awkard deboning and serving a fried crispy fish on top of a metal platter at a 2-seat table, but my Auntie-skills kicked in and it's no problem for me since I'm familiar with where the bones are. Friend ordered a Thai Coffee also (it might only come iced). The restaurant is beautiful and has a sleek but tropical Asian decor & about 75% full even up to closing. Has a cute outdoor seating area too - a very different vacation feel on a block of Woodside/Elmhurst Queens. Later I come to find out my Queens - born Thai friend said he stopped going to this restaurant after it's renovation and adding sushi to the menu. The ownership changed and he doesn't think it's Thai-owned anymore. Either way, I kind of wish the food met up to the standards of this "Little Thailand" area of NYC. Maybe I'll try them again if they have lunch specials. A couple was sharing a giant beer glass of Thai Tea.

The steak was the only dish that showed any sign of life. Everything else tasted as if it had been rinsed with water before being served--completely stripped of seasoning, aroma, and any trace of authentic Thai flavor. It's astonishing that a restaurant with such a strong reputation could produce food that's less flavorful than the faux Thai takeout spots tucked inside Chinese restaurants off the Ohio Turnpike. That's not an exaggeration. What's even more baffling is the location. In the heart of Queens, surrounded by Thai restaurants serving bold, vibrant, unapologetically flavorful food, Zaab Zaab somehow manages to be a culinary desert. The fried rice was bland, the drunken noodles were lifeless, and the pad kra pao lacked the punch, basil, heat, and savoriness that define the dish. It honestly felt as though the menu had been engineered for diners who think black pepper is adventurous. Instead of authentic Thai flavors, everything seemed toned down to the point of being unrecognizable. For a restaurant with this reputation, the meal was a massive letdown. There are countless nearby Thai restaurants that deliver the bold, aromatic flavors Thailand is known for. Save your money and your appetite for one of them.
