I saw Dr. Lowenthal a number of years ago; She ended up switching practices/offices and my insurance didn't cover me anymore but, in any case, I think my review probably still holds true today. She always treated me with respect even though I was honestly kind of a pain in the ass when I was younger lol. Dr. Lowenthal is professional, kind, courteous, and honest. She really cares about you as a patient both physically and emotionally. I trust her and feel like she actually listens to me as a person. She possesses a breadth of knowledge and expertise and is a great GP. Since moving to California from the other side of the country I have really struggled to find a doctor who I liked and trusted and I finally found one. I have nothing negative to say about her at all! Finally, I've found a GP I can stick with in Marin! I've been with One Medical for years for the convenience of same-day appointments and excellent response time. However, despite living in Marin, I never found a GP or someone consistent to see. I am so so pleased that they have Dr Lowenthal on staff in Greenbrae and have been extremely happy with her care. She really takes the time to listen to my concerns and offers a host of solutions on the spot and for home care. She is even kind enough to write all of her instructions down for me to take home. Aside from being smart as a whip, I love that Dr Lowenthal takes the extra initiative to tell me what to expect. Being a doctor is not easy these days. Hectic schedules, less reimbursement, patient care and less time. Dr. Lowenthal manages to shuffle all these components. And shuffle them extremely well. I feel comfortable, cared for and listened to. Dr. Lowenthal is also funny and has a great personality which I think is a must for my doctor. Dr. Lowenthall isn't for everyone, but she's PERFECT for me. She's smart, she listens and she genuinely cares about my medical concerns. She also concerns herself with those items that I'm not focused on and reminds me to take care of myself to avoid high cholesterol, diabetes and high BP. Dr Lowenthal has been my PCP now for over three years, after my PCP of 19 years retired. I couldn't be happier every time I need to see her, which thank god isn't often! I do see her for my yearly physicals and she's very through! I can get an appointment within 24 hours from the time I call for an appointment.Dr Lowenthal practices in Marin, and I live in the East Bay, and will continue to travel the distance! When I see her, I have her total attention and gives me more than ample time to explain my problem. I have total confidence in her professional ability to properly diagnose and treat! Dr Lowenthal also explains what she's doing and follows up after I've left her office. I can also say without reservation, she is an expert when it comes to giving injections!! Update: I took the same issue I brought to Dr. Lowenthal to a board certified endocrinologist. He agreed with me, point by point. He ended up prescribing what I needed to deal with the original problem, (a treatment I'd been using successfully for years but which Lowenthal dismissed out-of-hand) and just for fun threw in a blood pressure med which has worked amazingly well. So just to be clear, with no medical background whatever, armed only with about 30 minutes on Google, I did a better job diagnosing and 'prescribing' for the issue than Dr. Lawrence who'd not only been epically unpleasant, but wrong. I don't blame people for honest mistakes - I'm too aware of my own. I do blame people when they are not just wrong, but arrogantly and insufferably so. read more

I wish I had thought to read the Yelp reviews before going with this doctor - make sure you search all entries on her; i.e., you can see more reviews of her on the East Bay Family Practice pages (there are a few of them on here.) Being an East Coast transplant, I didn't know anything about the medical practices in the area, so I let my insurance pick one out for me at random. They assigned me to Polly Young at this practice. I got sick before I could do my research, so I just went to the practice. Dr. Young couldn't see me, so the practice assigned me to Lowenthal. I should have seen right through it - she was a new doctor who needed patients. When I expressed my concerns, Lowenthal claimed to be an expert in all of them, and as I was too sick to think, I gave her lack of sincerity or confidence in her remarks the benefit of the doubt. Big mistake. I specifically listed to her previous traumatic experiences that I needed her to be careful about, she assured me she was an expert in those concerns, but proved herself horrendously wrong. She re - traumatized me. As for illness, when I went to her several times (i work in a characteristically germ-filled environment), because I was tired of missing too much work and needed official proof I was sick for it, there was nothing new I learned from her. I seemed to know more about what to do, with Whole Foods for a pharmacy, than what she did, even though she's the doctor and I am the patient. I came to her when I needed antibiotics if the infection didn't clear by actions of common sense and tried and true remedies (varied fluids; rest but not without some movement and fresh air; soups made with garlic, cayenne, ginger, lemon, greens, etc; neti pot and salt gargling; and so forth); again, she would give me advice that i already knew and she knew that I knew. It goes on, but I can't even go there without wanting to upchuck thinking about it. read more

Dr. Sarah Lowenthal is a young, relatively inexperienced doctor operating on a surprisingly old fashioned assumption: that there is no need to earn the trust of your patients, as the doctor always knows best. I had the shocking experience of being fired as her patient upon my second visit. After years of debilitating, unexplained symptoms and losing a great doctor who left the Bay Area, I was seeking a new doctor who could follow through on helping me find the root of the problem. I arrived at my appointment well-prepared with a comprehensive history and list of symptoms, and having done a great deal of research on possible diagnosis. When I arrived at the office, I had to remind three different people of my correct name, this after requesting that my name be written clearly on my chart. I was put into a child's examination room and left to sit among the toys, children's reading material, and a sign about dirty diapers. Next, the doctor arrived and asked me a number of the same questions she had asked on my previous (first) visit. She refused to read the typed list I supplied of my symptoms ("I don't have time") or listen to my concerns about the necessity for a thorough evaluation of the symptoms. She insisted that she had "plenty of experience" with my potential diagnosis. When I tried to explain my reasons for desiring a more comprehensive testing process, she stated, "this isn't going to work out." She opened the door, and basically fired me as her patient. I have never been so poorly treated by a person in the medical profession. Clearly, the motto "do no harm" is something she never learned in medical school. You may have a better experience of her if you are willing to do her bidding without question...perhaps like a 5-year old? The process was so humiliating and infantilizing, I did cry like a little kid once I left the building. I should have asked for a lollipop. On the plus side, she had lovely hair. However, I imagine she'll have some nasty frown lines very soon if she keeps up the negative bedside manner. read more

Dr. Lowenthal reminds me of the doctors of yore who looked us in the eye while listening to what ails us, rather than absentmindedly typing into a computer. My husband and I brought my nonagenarian mother-in-law to see Dr. Lowenthal for a number of complaints. Dr. L. was uncommonly attentive, thorough, kind, and capable. We could not have asked for a better experience with a medical professional. Our concerns were comprehensively addressed and our questions were patiently and straightforwardly answered. As a primary care physician and academic medical educator myself, I was appalled by Dr Lowenthal. She is low energy, makes no attempt to establish rapport/a therapeutic alliance and is a poor history gatherer (she starts offering lame, half-hearted advice before she even collects the entire medical history). Her "physical exam" consisted of listening to my lungs. Wow. If she were my student, I would have failed her. On top of that, she took me early for my 3 pm appointment. After 10 minutes, she noted we were going to have to wrap up the appointment because we were "out of time" (please note it was 2:59 and my 3 pm appointment was slotted to run until 3:30 pm). My experience with Dr. Lowenthal was perhaps the worst experience I have encountered with a physician; though in fairness, until this appointment, I have never had a bad experience. I scheduled an appointment for a physical/annual exam. Although I read through all of the reviews, as I appreciate honest dialog and 'straight talk', I thought she might be a good fit for me. I waited for 3 months for a 'long' appointment as I was told on the phone that a physical takes a longer appointment. When I arrived for the appointment, I was informed by Dr. Lowenthal that a 'long' appointment was 20 minutes and that would only allow enough time for her to intake information and that I would need to make another appointment to actually get the exam. The next 'long' appointment was another month out. She was so concerned about the time, it eventually became distracting and frustrating. (I actually had an issue that I needed to be examined for, hence the appointment). I could have filled out this information online and she could have asked me the specifics while examining me as the next doctor I scheduled did, very thoroughly. I am suspicious of the three glowing reviews that come within days of each other. Dr. Lowenthal is not a doctor for whom I would entrust my health. read more

I don't know how I got so lucky to find Dr Sarah Lowenthal. She has been my primary care doctor for a couple of years now and each time I see her, I leave her office having had all my questions and concerns more than satisfied. She really listens to what I have to say and offers sage advice on current trends in medicine . She is careful and thoughtful about what tests, referrals and medicines she prescribes. I especially appreciate her sensitivity to my reluctance to take meds, that seem to be passed out to seniors, simply because they have reached "that age." Sarah Lowenthal is wonderful human being and a great doctor. She saved my life by recognizing what I thought was excessive fatigue was a pulmonary embolism.
