I had my 86 Corvette at a shop in Santa Rosa for engine and transmission replacement. The transmission was taken to SR Hydramatic for rebuilding with a shift kit installation. When I received the car i complained that it shifted sluggish and could not tell shift kit was installed. Within a year the torque converter failed. Took it back and they serviced and replaced the torque converter. This car had less than 2500 miles on rebuilt tranny and engine. I drove it to my new home in San Tan Valley Az, 770 miles. Two days later 15 months after SR Hydramatic had serviced and replaced torque converter it failed again. Steve the shop owner insisted someone had messed with the throttle cable adjustment which he insisted was the cause of the first failed torque converter. NO ONE HAD TOUCHED THE THROTTLE CABLE AND STEVE REFUSED TO ACCEPT IT AS HIS BAD REBUILD I took the car to a shop in Queen Creek Az with reputable trained technicians, i asked them to examine the tranny. The torque converter failed was literally fried as well as the bands and bushings. THE MAIN CAUSE OF THE FAILED TRANSMISSION WAS DUE TO SR HYDRAMATIC INSTALLED AN UNDERSIZED PUMP WHICH WAS DESIGNED FOR A 6 CYLINDER ENGINED. THIS CAUSED EXCESSIVE HEAT WHICH FRIED THE TRANNY I HAD CALLED STEVE SEVERAL TIMES AND LEFT MESSAGES FOR HIM TO CALL ME SO I COULD TELL HIM WHY TRANNY FAILED. HE WOULD NOT ACCEPT MY CALLS OR CALL ME BACK SR HYDRAMATIC DOES NOT REBUILD TRANSMISSIONS ACCORDINGLY TO SPECIFICATIONS. PLEASE DO NOT HAVE THEM WORK ON YOU TRANSMISSION The repair shop i used for engine and tranny replacement,!reimbursed me for the cost of having the transmission rebuilt in Queen Creek Az. Great people working HARD to provide GREAT SERVICE while making it look easy. Emphatically, it's not easy to do the kind of work they do at Santa Rosa Hydramatic. In fact, there are a lot of what I call "imposters" out there, but Steve and Brandon aren't in that category. They're honest and they know what they're doing. It's a simple formula lacking in a lot of auto service providers. (Did I mention that they're honest....?) My story is as follows: Not someone who needs the newest coat of paint or the latest gizmo, yet unproven (what I call "flash and dash"), I own an 11-year old Ford Escape (2013) that I just love to drive. I've "tricked" it out with signal-activated side cameras and high speed tires (not that I speed, but for the handling). It's got high-end brake pads, competent front-end alignment and recommended periodic maintenance. It meets all my needs and I've meticulously maintained it, proactively replacing what I know will eventually fail, as with all vehicles, before it fails, and doing all the routine at appropriate intervals. At 150,000 miles, the transmission began to shift abruptly and hard on occasion, and then a "shutter" between 1,500 and 2,000 rpms started. By 160K, I knew that a rebuilt transmission wasn't far away. Rather than wait for an inconvenient, catastrophic transmission failure, I took it to a Ford dealer to have it analyzed, confirming what I had already concluded. The transmission was beginning to fail. When the dealer dropped a sum larger than my social security number on me that was headed in the direction of my wallet, I consulted the nice folks at Hydramatic. I was given several options for a rebuilt transmission and torque converter with comments about their prior experience with each supplier, and a recommendation, which I chose to follow. Hydramatic has a demand for its services twice as long as anyone's arm, yet they managed to schedule me well within the time parameters my busy life required. My vehicle was up on the rack in a relatively short time, and, two days later, it came out of the shop all set up. Except Brandon immediately acknowledged that there was a "problem." Turns out, the torque converter supplied with the transmission by the rebuilder had an obscure balance problem. My vehicle did fine on the road, however there was a serious vibration that would shake my teeth when sitting in drive or reverse. Steve said that he had a similar experience on two other occasions, one with a Ford Fusion, which shares the same transmission, and the other, a Chevy. I think it's important to add that Hydramatic should NOT be held responsible for a faulty torque converter sent by their supplier... Things happen to all of us, and it just happened to happen to them. NOT their fault! Brandon and Steve were immediately "on it," assuring me that they would order a replacement from the supplier and then schedule my vehicle back for the final install as soon as possible. In the meantime, I was able to drive it by shifting into neutral or park while stopped. It never vibrated while in motion. Though he said that it wouldn't be problematic beyond the vibration, Steve also provided me with several numbers with which to reach them if anything did happen - nothing did. Again, these people KNOW what they're doing! In short, they hustled to get the replacement torque converter into my vehicle when it came in, even starting the "tear down" on the delivery day before it arrived. A little over 24 hours later, my Escape was back in my possession and, after driving it over 500 miles since then, I can say that it runs like a top - maybe even better than when it was new! Oh, and, as I've heard said, "The best surprise is NO SURPRISE!" I wasn't charged a dime over the original quote. Not a cent! Additionally, the total I paid was $2,000 LESS than the dealer quoted. (Disclaimer, NOT the Ford dealer in Santa Rosa. I don't know if they would have charged near or equal to what I was originally quoted in the East Bay. I didn't ask them for a quote.) What I do know is this - The service I received in the hands of Santa Rosa Hydramatic was courteous, clearly explained, economical and expertly accomplished. Everyone, from Steve and Brandon to the technician who did the test drive with me, and others in the shop, were straight-up front with me and always helpful and friendly. Brandon always makes eye contact and speaks authoritatively reflecting his character and commitment. Steve (his father) is a "trip," as is said, and, I hasten to add, "a trip" in the very best tradition. These folks and the people they employ are the genuine article. If you want great, competent service done with integrity, you won't go wrong putting your vehicle in the hands of the folks at Santa Rosa Hydramatic. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!!!!!!!! I took my Muncie 4 speed in to have the case repaired and the transmission rebuilt and Steve said "hey I have one I built for a guy and he never came to get it and I'll sell it for the $900 I have in it." I said I would take it and then he back peddled and said it's been 6 months , but I have to call the guy. The next day I went in and he had torn mine down to find the case was worse than we thought. Then all of a sudden this same Muncie we spoke about the day before would be $2,200, but he still can't get a hold of him. So I said I would come back the next day. When I showed up the next day he said he talked to the guy and he wanted $3,100 for the transmission. I told him I was not interested and put all the parts for my transmission that I could find in the hell hole of a mess there and he charged me $391.40 to spend 20 min taking mine apart to look at it. Exceptional services by the crew at Santa Rosa Hydramatic! In late November 2019 my 2004 VW Jetta was showing signs of slipping and difficulty shifting at higher gears. After explaining my car's previous history of the battery chronically discharging and bringing in my car, they told me to replace a relay (after looking up a code on their computer) and the battery itself before anything else. Just for their time and consult, they did this free of charge! I really appreciated that they did not dive right into transmission work but gave me a chance to solve other possible and cheaper problems first. Sadly, although my car did need those two replacements, it was still having problems shifting. I didn't have the finances for a brand new transmission from the dealer (also that would have been easily 3 times worth the value of the car), so they were honest about my options: use my car for my short drives to work until the transmission gave up, or take a gamble on a used transmission from a parts shop in SF that they could install. I decided on the latter and although it took quite a few tries to find not only the correct but a dependable transmission (I think we went through 4 total before finding the best one) SRH was nothing but patient and helpful throughout this entire drawn out process. It took almost 3 months to find the right one (that itself is the gamble of getting a used transmission) and Steve Sr. was always in my corner, calling out the parts place on the long delay. My car was in their lot during this whole time and they even tried installing one of the transmissions that ended up being faulty when test driven, but they did not charge me a single cent for that. These guys rock!!! This shop is one of those "hole-in-the-wall" operations (in the pink building) that isn't all glitz, slick advertising or gimmicks. Being from Marin County, there are no real transmission rebuild shops left - a lost art and skill. It's just R&R, overcharge @$4,000 plus, and call it a day. You pay through the nose for nice waiting rooms, wide screen TV with non-stop sports playing, Kuerig coffee machines, soft drinks, and eats. However, another Yelp poster for SRH said: "If you want a plush waiting room, wide screen TV with non-stop sports playing, a Kuerig coffee maker, soft drinks, and eats, this isn't the place for you. If you want quality transmission service at a fair price, this is the "go to place, period!" Agree! Took my Dodge RAM 1500 to Brandon, Dr. Brad, Jamie, and the guys today for a diagnostic (no shift of 1st to 2nd without brief gas pedal release), and service flush, fluid, filter, et al. Unfortunately, Brandon and Brad unloaded the diagnostic bad news after dropping the pan - tranny requires a rebuild. Fluid was thick and dirty with accumulated metal deposits on the pan magnetic. In light of the bad news - is the good news. In the scheme of all things automotive, Brandon said they can rebuild it for a reasonable price well below what I initially surmised. They advised not changing the fluid as the transmission function would be severely diminished, and then some. Brandon and Brad recommended leaving well enough alone for the interim since it has functioned as such for 15 years. Their assessment was spot on! The professionalism they projected, extensive transmission knowledge, and their sincerity was stellar; and they're good conversationalists! The icing on the cake - they spent well over an hour dropping the pan, assessing the diagnostic, Dr. Brad's extensive tech input, and, they allowed me to snap some shots of the exposed components for review before closing her up. I have 2001 Rav 4 that has 130,000 miles on it, in great shape, and clean. I have always taken it to Toyota for all of its service. One day the gears started grinding, and I took it to Toyota. They said it needed a new computer for $2000 and a new transmission for $6000. The blue book is about $3000. I wasn't ready to buy a new car. The car sat in my driveway for a month as I was calling around for someone to look at it. A transmission place told me to call Santa Rosa Hydramatic. The owner listened then asked what year my Rav 4 was and said he had seen this many times and most likely the computer. I asked how much he would charge and he said about $475. My fiance and I took our chevy truck here for a new transmission. We also needed a new starter, but we're college students on very low funds and were not sure if we could afford both repairs in one visit, so we said we need to be called with a quote before he replaced the starter. The owner, Steve, said he would call us in a couple days with the price for the starter and the quote for the entire transmission replacement. He never called us. About a week passed and I finally decided to call in to check on the car. He had already replaced both the transmission and the starter, without our permission! However, there were some problems with the transmission, so they were still working on the car. When I asked why he never called us first, he called me "young lady", gave me attitude and said, "Well, I was gonna only charge you $20 for the starter, but now I think I'll charge you the full $45 for it, just for giving me a hard time." Wait, what??? This level of disrespect, immaturity, and unreliable communication went on throughout the rest of the transaction, right up to the point of one of the mechanics yelling at my fiance for the way he was backing out to leave the shop once the job was done. I must give them credit for the repair itself seeming to be fine and working, but we have never in our lives experienced such horrendous customer service, especially after handing them $2,500!!! read more

I own several classic cars. I needed two transmissions rebuilt so I began asking who had the best shop in Santa Rosa. My fellow car enthusiasts all recommended Steve at SR Hydra-Matic Transmissions. I met Steve in person at a local car show. He was very cool, friendly and exceptionally knowledgeable on my particular transmission. After our meeting I dropped off the transmissions at his shop. Not only were my two transmission rebuilds completed quickly, but the repair was hundreds of dollars less than what I was quoted because Steve discovered the problem was not as bad as we first discussed. You have to be impressed with that high level of integrity and service. Without even asking (and I normally do ask) Steve boxed up and gave me back the worn out parts just so I could see and learn what work had been done. As a car guy, I love that Steve made this extra effort for me. I am a very happy customer because not only do I have my transmissions professionally rebuilt but I can feel confident that these transmissions now have a warranty. Since I know nothing about transmissions Steve could have easily said I needed a $2000 rebuild. Instead he said that it just needed regular service and that I should drive it around and if any problems pop up bring it back to him so he can check it out. The van has been driving great. Some of the absolute best mechanics in the area and the best place to go for any repair. They are super connected with most places in town and are able to get any job done. I have had a radiator and fan replaced in 30 minutes in a emergency and they were way cool. Although I paid the full 1 1/2 labor. But I was leaving town and it went out as I was getting on 101... One cell phone call and three blocks later they were there to get me going. But I am a semi regular. They have replaced a clutch for me and done a few odds and ends for me over the last 4 years. The only reason I don't have 5 stars is that the price of labor is high and there are places much cheaper that do some of the same stuff as well, plus I don't trust mechanics so just out of suspiciousness of anything that costs over 80 a hour i take a star.... Call and get estimates and always question them on the discrepancies and be polite with them. You don't piss off your fast food cook cause he will mess your order up right....? read more

I recently had the misfortune of having my 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 transmission die on me! Luckily I had previously been to SRH to have it evaluated because it was acting up a bit and it had nearly 200k on the odometer.Upon entering SRH I was greeted by the owner Steve Ferguson. He appearance was somewhat imposing but after talking to him for a while I was very impressed with his depth of knowledge as well as his very easy going attitude. Now lets' slowly fast forward to last Thursday when my truck's transmission finally failed. They immediately found a rebuilt upgraded unit and had it shipped from Salt Lake City to Santa Rosa. It arrived Tuesday they installed it on Wednesday and tested it out for most of Thursday. I picked it up Thursday afternoon. it runs like a new transmission. Now I pride myself at 71 as being somewhat of a difficult customer. Some places that I have patronized or tried to patronize consider charging me an A-hole tax because of my constant need of attention and general inquisitiveness.You know the guy that has a bit of knowledge, enough to drive the technician a bit sideways. However,the 2 Steves, made me feel like I was one of the family, very casual knowledgeable and never condescending. Now if you're looking for a shop with a spacious customer lounge, a Keurig coffee maker, a couch, and a flat screen TV tuned into sports, that's not here. The shop seems a bit disorganized, the parking lot? Well, forget it. BUT do not let that deter you from patronizing SRH. It's the real deal! the gold standard of performance and customer service. We took our 67 Camaro in a few months back. Steve Sr and his entire staff were great to work with. They ended up rebuilding the entire transmission and replacing the clutch. They were very knowledgeable with the older Muncie 4 speed transmissions. The car is more enjoyable to drive with the modern feeling clutch, and it shifts great, and my wife doesn't have to sit so close to the steering wheel with the way they set the catch point/gray area. I would NOT go here they are not honest or trustworthy. I spoke to someone on the phone about a price quote for a fluid change and filter for my cvt and I specifically said that I needed the oem factory nissan synthetic cvt fluid and nothing else and he reasured me that he will use the factory fluids and all and quoted me $200ish. After he was done I got my car back and paid 220.36 and asked if he got the filter. He said it didnt have/need one and I said he was wrong and that it does that its on the oil cooler return line filter and he said oh that Im gonna need to come in the next morning to fix that. Im mad but just want this done and over with and agreed to come in the next morning. After I got home I looked at the receipt and noticed the part was cv5 ns2 compatible fluid. Compatible? I called them and asked what kind of fluid was put in my car and I was told valvoline cvt ns2 compatible fluid. I was so angry after finding out that this fluid voids my worrenty and now Im stuck with the wrong fluid and an old filter and down 220 bucks. He said to just come in and he will fix it and went on to say that there was nothing wrong with valvoline and I asked him if he is a Nissan expert and he said that he knows well and I said well obviously you dont vecause you didnt even know that there was a filter that needed to be replaced as well and he stoped talking. This place is a professionals transmission shop but just doesnt varify the specs of each vehicle or listen to the customers requests. If I didnt know any better I would leave thinking that a good job had been done just to fibd out later that I needed a new transmission and return to them to fix it. Im not certain if they knew what they were doing or not, all I know is that this is a pain in the ass to fix this issue now. Just go somewhere else where they honor their word and where they look up the appropriate specs and do the job correctly the first time for your hard earned cash. I really like these guys, and the owner. I think they are straight shooters and to the point. I would reccomend them, and feel like they are honest. They fixed the vacuum line on my RV's transmission and did a great job a few years ago and didn't charge me an arm and a leg. I cannot say enough good things about this shop. Steve is amazing and all of the mechanics definitely know their stuff. We have a business with several vehicles that they have serviced for us, rebuilt transmissions, etc., and I have never had a bad experience. My husband and I brought in our 2001 Dodge pickup there on a Saturday. Steve was nice enough to meet us there and look at our truck. After running some tests on the truck he came to the conclusion we did NOT need a new transmission. Great news for us! Steve took his time, explained everything toughly and was very nice. Did not fill my rear diff on my '65 Mustang. Did not zip tie my neutral safety switch wires out of the way when transmission was rebuilt and caused it to short circuit onto my exhaust. Sure hope that mechanic got fired. read more
