It is so great to have an auto repair shop to go to, besides the dealer. Mr. G. Roman's philosophy is to be honest and only recommend work that is truly needed. The dealers's philosophy is to upsell. Transmissions are their specialty, but they do other services as well. To name a few: Flushes (radiator, brakes, power steering, transmissions) Brakes Timing belt Cooling system Electrical diagnosis and repair In 2002, we took my 1995 Dodge Caravan there to have the transmission serviced. The dealer wanted beaucoup bucks for a new tank. Romans drained the existing tank, applied gunky stuff to the bottom, and filled it with fresh transmission fluid. It lasted for a couple years! I don't know what happened after that, because the suspension failed and we got rid of it. They changed out 2 door locks on a family member's 2005 Honda Civic for $250. The dealer quoted over $1,000 for one door lock. To say I'm happy with Roman's is an understatement. read more

Having an older car that all of a sudden needed some work done and not knowing where to go, I guess I'm a fool for going off of a local business with great Yelp reviews. This place charged me over $500 for one hours work. Car was towed there at 9:30, got the call that it was done by 10:30. I even had the piece that needed to be replaced, purchased from O'Reillys. And to top it off my car sounded worse after it was so called repaired. My fault for not getting some type of estimate in writing, but I heard a sob story on how short staffed he was and it's only him there. I will never ever ever go back to this place ever ever again. After getting an extremely high quote to replace my transmission from a different shop, I decided to call around to get some other comparable quotes. Greg took the time to go over the issues that my van was having and and offer his opinion and most of all suggest that I call Ford and find out if it's under warranty. I bought the van used and really didn't think anything would come from that route but I listened to his professional advice. Turns out, there was a 60,000 mile warranty on the drivetrain and Ford will be replacing it for free. Greg saved me $8,000!! Roman's Transmission Service was recommended to me by a friend in the classic car club I am a member of. I have a 1964 Pontiac Bonneville which had the original Hydramatic transmission in it. This was a complicated, less than reliable transmission even when new back in the late 50's and early 60's. It finally went out on me. There were only a few transmission techs around the country that would even try to rebuild these as parts and knowledge were long gone. Greg has converted many of these old transmissions to more current modern reliable ones. Reliability was what I was looking for. Greg suggested a conversion to a GM 700R4 overdrive transmission. The conversion is not an easy one, due to the starter being attached to the old Hydramatic as well as linkage and bolt patterns. Greg is a master technician and was able to complete this conversion with outstanding results. Driving this car is like night and day. No more "clunks" between gear changes usually experienced with the Hydramatics, and driving on the highway with the overdrive gear has nicely improved my MPG. I highly recommend Greg and his transmission shop. I couldn't have asked for a better outcome. read more

Paid them $1900 to repair 2005 Ford F150 engine dying/running rough issue. Greg said it runs great. Picked it up , 1 1/2 hour drive home no problems. Put it into reverse to back into parking space at home and it died out. Started it up again it ran super rough then died. Called Greg for what to do. He wants us to tow vehicle back to him. He is 80 miles away. I offered to pay for tow and have him take it from bill he said NO, he guarantees his work. I don't think so because the same issue is still happening. Not good customer service. I can do my own mechanical work, but don't have the time. My 1994 Ford Ranger check engine light came on. A friend read the codes for me and it showed I had no 4th gear or overdrive. I confirmed this on the road. Maybe because I know about cars I have higher standards, but not in this case. I called Roman's and asked what an inspection would cost. I was actually fine living with no overdrive, but if it was something simple I wanted to fix it. I was told an inspection would cost $75. I figured $75 and I'd either leave it alone, or fix it if it weren't too much $$. I was told an hour or 2. After 4.5 hours I called, and was told the two wires that control 4th and overdrive (converter lockup) were simply unplugged, and that he plugged them in, and test drove the car to confirm it worked. At that point, I expected, and was happy to pay $75, figuring I'd done the right thing because it was something simple. Then I was given a bill of $130! I said I was told an inspection was $75, and that's all I authorized anyone to do. I was told that they did a lot more than an inspection, and spent time driving the car, and they spent over an hour on the car. If I had been called and told the plugs were unplugged, I could have done that myself. I might have even just had them do it, and paid the $130, IF I had been called, but they just plugged the wires back in, and I really think for what they did, that I was seriously overcharged. It's really hard to find mechanics that are 100% honest. I'm sure they probably did spend an hour on the car, but all I asked for was an inspection, and I expected to pay for what I had authorized them to do. I was charged almost twice what I was quoted and had asked for. The gentleman at the front desk gave me a few bucks off the total, so I paid $110. I'm happy the car is fixed, but a bit peeved that I was charged so much for such a simple fix that took all of 5 seconds to do. Had my normal mechanic found the same wires unplugged, she would have plugged them in and not even charged me. SHE is 100% Honest! Unfortunately, she's always booked for weeks in advance (go figure). This review is 100% accurate. I'm happy the car now has 4th and overdive, but I'm not happy that I wasn't called and given a quote and told what was wrong, and I'm not happy that I was charged more than I expected (and was quoted for an inspection) and that work was done without my authorization. I can't recommend Roman's Transmissions to anyone, because I can't guarantee they'll get overcharged. read more

I am a big fan of Roman's. My daughter was told by AAMCO on Cleveland Ave. that she needed a whole new transmission. We called several transmission shops in Santa Rosa. Not one said they could fix the transmission. They said the only option was to replace the entire thing for around $4,000. This news was a real bummer considering the car isn't even worth $4,000. Mr. Roman was the only fellow who said, "Bring it in, and we'll take a look". To my surprise, he determined that her transmission mounts needed to be replaced. He fixed her car for $800, and it runs great. We had excellent service. He even attached her skid plate which had fallen off - and was in her trunk. read more

After visiting a few other transmission shops around Santa Rosa, I took a chance and brought my 1994 Dodge camper van in for an inspection on my failing transmission. I am so pleased that I did because I had issues with other shops before, but Roman's shop has been nothing but a great experience. Firstly, this is a family run business and the people who run it, Gregorio and his wife treat customers very well, are honest with their prices, and provide stellar mechanical service. My transmission was failing, that was apparent because the tranny had overheated a week before and my van had experienced power loss and hesitation between gears. They confirmed the issue, even found some fragments of metal after opening the transmission pan. Gregorio advised me that a rebuild would be necessary. Yikes, I was worried about the cost and having just purchased this van used, I thought I'd need to park it for a while so that I could save up to rebuild the tranny. But... this shop worked with me, and Gregorio helped to keep me within my budget. He advised that he would re-build my transmission, but keep some of the parts (case/housing etc...) that were still in good shape. This helped me afford the service and get my van back on the road. I felt thankful that I could actually get the repair done and even though transmissions are always expensive, I was able to get the job done at a lower price than other competitors plus I could tell that I was in good hands. He did the job in less than a week, and it was a major improvement from the last transmission. More power and better torque. I was very pleased. Now about 6 months after he did the work, my transmission is still really driving strong. No issues. Not only did they do a great service at a very reasonable price, but Gregorio also allows me to stop by and check on other issues with my van without charging me or keeping the price very reasonable. This is very valuable to me as a customer and I really appreciate it. I don't ever need to be afraid stop by and ask a few questions if need be. They will give you a few minutes of their time to answer some questions. Since rebuilding my transmission, I've also brought my vehicle back for several other issues, including shocks and starter. They respect their customers and always say thanks for the business. I highly recommend taking in your vehicle for any needed service, but especially for transmission service. read more

My 21-year-old Honda Accord was driving rough, slow to kick into gear, so I took it to my regular mechanic, Peet's Garage (also highly recommended). They changed the trans fluid, but this didn't seem to improve anything, so they recommended I take it to G. Roman's, since they don't fix transmissions at Peet's. Greg Roman and his staff were super-friendly and professional; he test-drove the car all over town and beyond, and even kept it overnight to see if morning could would affect it. He didn't find any serious problems in diagnosis, so added a transmission additive, tinkered with the gear settings so it would shift sooner, and charged me a very reasonable fee for this service - instead of pushing an expensive transmission rebuild or replacement, which weren't needed. I think only once did I get another estimate where they weren't the best price; the savings wasn't enough to warrant trying a new place since I was already confident in the work (on later jobs I never bothered calling around, i just took it to them). Romans is a great place to take a car/suv for service. I had issues with my truck he diagnosed it and fixed the issue. The next day after i got my truck back i started having issues again. Roman took my truck and rechecked the issue. He didnt charge me a thing but just what he had to fix. Hes a very reasonable mechanic not to exspensive very honest and he will help if he can to help fix an issue. I was referred over here by Pennzoil (see my review for the reason). So got a used transmission (apparently Pennzoil asked them to get a used one) and put it in. I get the car and not 5 miles down the road later, the check engine light comes on. I had already returned the rental car, so basically I either had to arrange someone to pick me up or just wait there. Well, the problem is that I brought the car in every week (sometimes up to 3 times in a week) and the engine light would come on before I got more than 5 miles down the road. This happened for over TWO MONTHS. Finally, the owner said that it was my problem and that it was probably from the wiring in the car from the after market radio. I pulled out the XM radio and showed him how it was attached through my car charger and the car did not have the light on when I brought it in so why was he trying to hand it back. It won't pass smog with the light on. He tried to blame it on me but I argued my way back and wouldn't let him pin it on me. I called a mechanic friend of mine and he told me why the light was coming on. Apparently, a beginner would know that the problem that was tripping the light has to register twice before the light goes off. So it wasn't my poor driving skills as the owner said, but the fact that he was overlooking a simple fact he should have known. To make a long story short, turns out that the transmission they had bought wasn't fitting properly which was making the light go on. They reworked the old transmission and sent me home. Guess what? A couple months later when I changed my oil, in Sonoma the place told me my transmission fluid was leaking. What crappy work they do here. And it was terrible how they tried to make it my fault and blame a girl who knows nothing about cars. Thank god said girl at least has friends who know something. read more

Roman's was recommended to me when I was having some transmission problems. I was very nervous taking my "baby" to a new mechanic! The original estimate was $500 more than what they ultimately charged me for the work - I believe they heard me when I expressed concern about the amount of money we've been putting into our ten y/o cars recently, and kept the cost down. Shortly after the work was done, my car started making a terrible noise that had nothing to do with the original repair. Greg, the owner, asked me where I was, and immediately came to check out the car and test drive it. He was concerned, and had me drive his car back to the shop so I wouldn't be driving an unsafe vehicle! Once that repair was done, the car continued making the noise - even though the wheel bearings HAD been worn out, it turned out there was another part causing the problem. They made the additional repairs (including parts) at NO ADDITIONAL cost to me, which blew me away. In order to provide excellent customer service (they even drove me back to my house...and I'm pushing sixty...not some hot little chicky-babe!) they went out-of-pocket to repair my car.
