Santo Silverlake is the 2nd outpost of acclaimed original Santo Mexico City, which is truly a unique, visionary dining concept. This Japanese Mexican fusion restaurant on Sunset is simultaneously cozy, sexy, and sophisticated. The seating is intimate and as such, perfect for date night or catching up with a friend or two. In addition to indoor sushi bar seating, there is also a bit of outdoor seating, which makes for a good people watching experience. On to the food. What we ordered for the table: 1. Hamachi choco nigiri - their signature nigiri which consists of seared yellowtail topped with Oaxacan chocolate and salt. A very memorable and unique offering, and I recommend everybody to try this at least once while at Santo. 2. Uni nigiri - fantastic uni which was both buttery and sweet. 3. ikura nigiri - I'm just a sucker for ikura and will order it at every opportunity. Fantastic ikura quality. 4. Unagi nigiri - I love my eel. 5. Soft shell crab - perfect. 6. Salmon nigiri - a classic. 7. Otoro bowl - love fresh fatty tuna. Delicious little bowl. 8. Spicy tuna roll - my +1 isn't as fond of nigiri and sashimi as I am, so we indulged in a few rolls as well. All of them were excellent. 9. Daruma roll 10. San shake roll 11. Matcha brûlée - not quite what we expected, as under the perfectly seared brulee, there was a rice pudding filling. This is a solidly executed desert in its own right, but perhaps not my favorite. 12. A Junmai sake for the table. We were fortunate enough to find metered street parking immediately outside, but there should be free residential parking a couple blocks' walk from the restaurant as well. Santo is a cute Mexican sushi fusion spot in Silverlake with a unique take on the classics. My roll was traditional but topped with a ton of cilantro, making it really appealing. I also had the 10 piece set, which unfortunately comes with one avocado piece and one mushroom piece. They should nix those and add more fish. Honestly, I didn't love 5/10 pieces. The choco nigiri was an experience and def worth a try. The wagyu flame handroll was pretty cool too, although I didn't taste it. Service was mid. Everyone was beyond nice but I had to prompt them for everything. I still recommend trying Santo because of the unique experience. I've been to many sushi places and I like what they are doing. The fusion twist here is very LA in the best way. I hope the set gets more bold to showcase what this place is really made of. read more

This place is knocking it out of the park. I would give Santo 4.5 stars. The sushi is incredible with flavor profiles you don't get from other sushi restaurants. That Mexico City influence is on point! After a couple of bites my friend and I knew this would fast become a go to sushi spot for us. Love the location along Sunset in Silver Lake. Our server was super nice, he was a little hard to find at times but that's because of the sidewalk seating which is the little social scene outside. Where you normally get the more formal sushi service experience which is very attentive, Santo servers are definitely younger and a little laid back giving it that hipster vibe which I'm sure is why they attract the younger crowd outside. read more

Absolute perfection!! This restaurant is fairly small but packs a powerful punch when it comes to their menu. They have sushi bar seating, a couple of window seats, and outdoor seating as well. We had a late afternoon reservation, but walk-ins are also welcome. I started with the Little Sumo sake and ordered seven different nigiri, each with its own distinct flavor. Everything tasted super fresh and the seasoning and style made each bite delicious. My favorites were anything toro, the flame seared uni was amazing, the Hamachi Choco sushi was fire, and the hamachi tiradito sashimi was so good we ordered it three times. Overall, a pretty solid sushi spot in Silverlake. It is on the pricey side, not gonna lie, but the quality was there. I'd come back, just probably not in a rush. Overall, I had a pretty good experience at Santō. I love the fusion of Mexican and Japanese cuisine, and it's also cool that they have a sister restaurant in CDMX. As for the food, there were a few exceptional dishes, while others were just okay. The portions are very small, especially considering the prices, which are quite high. The service, however, was wonderful--our server was excellent, very attentive, and extremely knowledgeable about the menu. Only got a few pictures of some of the items we ordered. Here is wha we got: Santō broccoli - fantastic! You must get this--the broccoli is light and crispy. So happy to see an alternative to Brussels sprouts. Chu toro tostada - pretty good, wouldn't say it's amazing, but it was solid. You get two per order. Miso soup - very good! Otoro special nigiri - amazing, the flavors were incredible Buttery salmon nigiri - just ok not my favorite Hamachi choco nigiri - unfortunately did NOT like this one Santō brûlée - delicious! The matcha flavor is not overpowering, BUT it is the tiniest portion for $15 which was disappointing. We also ordered a few rolls but they weren't particularly memorable. You definitely want to get a reservation here! A very small and intimate space to eat some absolutely mouth watering food. We sat outside and were bumping backs with the guests at the table behind us but it was well worth it. Our server was great to talk with, gave us great recommendations and really took care of us. If you're feeling adventurous I HIGHLY recommend getting the hamachi choco. Our server described it to us like you're eating a store sushi and it's literally that! The hamachi melts in your mouth giving it a buttery taste and the charred cocoa powder on top gives it the nice smoky flavor. One of our favorite restaurants we've been to in LA. We love sushi & this place lived up to the high expectations we had. We had a reservation and sat at the sushi bar. Seating is a bit tight but this is a super small place. We enjoyed being able to watch the chefs do their thing. Drink and wine menu was thoughtful and had many great options. We ordered a ton of food (really wanted to try a lot of their options). The crispy rice with tuna was insane. And we ordered nearly all of the nigiri options. There wasn't one option we didn't like. The hamachi choco was a stellar ending as it's true as other people have said, that it eats like a s'mores. We loved the Japanese style with Mexican influences throughout the menu. Also had the Wagyu hand rolls and they were delicious. Even the ube ice cream we had for dessert was so tasty. Service was great even though they were busy. Everyone was so cool and friendly. Honestly had higher expectations going into it based on photos and reviews, so maybe that's on me. The space is very small, with around 10 bar seats and an additional 8? seats lined up against the front. The outside space in front of the spot along the sidewalk is the only space with seating for families as a high chair cannot fit at the bar. The food was good. Not excellent, just good. A pleasant evening sitting at the counter with a coworker-friend, we decided to try a few items on the menu that was recommended to us by the chef and server. Here is what we ordered: Crispy tortilla with spicy tuna - this was a great shared appetizer and a nice way to kick off the meal. It's not out of the ordinary and didn't surprise me too much, but still a lovely beginning. Seared o'toro - YES! This was my favorite on the menu. The presentation was mesmerizing as the chef seared the fish in front of us with burning coal. Flavors were delicious - would recommend! Crispy soft shell crab hand roll - also very good, and quite a treat on the palate! I liked the amount of crunchiness to the rice / crab ratio. I was sad that it was gone lol! Vegan fysh handroll - my friend was a former vegan so she wanted to give this a try. Honestly it tasted exactly like fish and was mind-blowing to know that it wasn't! 5 piece nigiri - this could've easily been eaten without sharing. 4 out of the 5 were good, the 5th was a mushroom one which I didn't enjoy too much. I found it strange that this was one of the items on the set. For dessert: we got the matcha brûlée and the matcha ice cream. The brulle was by far my least favorite thing we ordered. Neither of us finished it. Thank goodness that the matcha ice cream turned out to be good! Overall, it was a lovely experience with my coworker. Some of the best I've had in a while, though, shared a few very memorable rolls that will have me coming back to santo soon. Loved the crispy rice and the "slightly spicy" shishito peppers. Crispy rice was stacked with a delicious spicy tuna The spicy tuna roll had even more stacked on top, along with a tiny baby cilantro leaf that added lots of flavor. I hadn't had a veggie roll like this with coconut flakes on top either. The unagi Hand roll was so good, with a delicious charcoal tasting eel. but the seaweed wrap got chewy very quickly and wasn't the most pleasant. I've wanted to come here for a while and finally had my chance on a Friday for lunch. Despite its small size, no reservations were necessary and we had our pick of either inside or inside. We chose wrong since the outside is constantly bombarded by exhaust fumes from the passing cars. The sushi was fresh, the rice warm, the presentation emasculate. I tried a few of their more creative concoctions and there wasn't a single miss.
