Looking for the best ramen in Ottawa? Look no further. Situated right off the main drag on Merivale Road sits this Mecca for ramen. Easily the most delicious broth I have ever had, and they have Japanese beer for takeaway to complete your dining experience. My one small knock would be the wait, so if you are doing takeaway definitely order ahead as they are BUSY.

So I've been wanting to try Sansotei ever since they opened in Ottawa. Their first location was on Bank St which is not all that convenient for me, so I was thrilled when they opened this second location on Merivale with free parking on-site. However, even years after they've opened in Ottawa, both sites regularly have lineups out the door. I'm not one to stand in line for restaurants, so I've had many failed attempts at eating here (nearby restaurants have benefited as a result, as I went there instead). Anyway, finally on a Friday at about 2:30pm I drove by and saw it was practically empty, so I popped in for whatever meal you want to consider it. Overall, the food was very tasty and flavourful, but so incredibly fatty that I think that one bowl of ramen had more saturated fat in it than is recommended for me in a year! I got the Tonkotsu Ramen with thin noodles ($12.50). It comes with 2 pieces of pork belly, a soft boiled egg (cut in half), some black fungus, and green onions. The broth was rich and filled with flavour. It tasted really creamy and had a nice garlic fragrance to it. It was super oily though. Pork belly by nature is fatty, these pieces were ultra fatty! The egg was nicely soft boiled and tasted creamy and pretty much melted in my mouth. I love mushrooms, so I enjoyed the black fungus, which I would describe as being a cross between a mushroom and some seaweed in texture. The noodles were nice and chewy, but weren't as springy as I like. I enjoyed the ramen, but it was really too rich/oily/fatty for me. I'm glad I tried it, but I will likely not return. Perhaps if they added some more lean meat options or some vegetarian options I would return. Service was very friendly and efficient. The place is very clean looking with minimalistic decor. The on-site parking is easily accessible off of Merivale if you are going northbound. If you are going southbound, turn left (east) at Capilano, then quick left (north) into a little driveway that leads to the parking lot. There's a sign, but it may not be that noticeable.

Been here a few time. When there's nothing in mind to have breakfast, I would recommend to go there if you just happen to be in this area. Friendly service, always smiling. Only one downside about it is too much MSG or miso in the soup. Gets very thirsty after eating them.

    Tomato Ramen!

I love this place! Restaurant is small but cozy. Tried tomato ramen for the first time and was pleasantly surprised.

This place never disappoints! Always great service and amazing food. I ordered the Tonkotsu Black and enjoyed every bit of it. I was surprised there wasn't a line out the door. Usually when I go to the Merivale location I'll have to wait in line before getting seated... I guess I picked a good time because we got seated right away. I noticed they added a vegetarian option to the menu so I'm curious to try that dish next. It smelt delicious.

We stopped by here during their opening day last month, purely by coincidence. This Sansotei is situated where the Menchie's used to be on Merivale, and there was ample parking when we visited (although we came later in the night, so I'm not sure if this is the case during the day with the other businesses in that plaza). We came in and a table was available, so that was fortuitous. No line up and a table right away during opening night? Yes please. It WAS busy, but it was also a Monday evening, so that could explain the lack of a lineup. The space inside is small, but seems more spacious than the one on Bank St. Instead of a long rectangular space, it's more square, so the kitchen and pay area is immediately to the left while all the tables are to the right. They also have bar stools by the window, which is great, since I myself have singularly come in for a quick lunch at Sansotei in the past and always felt bad at taking a full table with the lineup outside. The design is much more conducive for effective customer service and flow. They were fully staffed during the opening night, as they should. We saw some of their more seasoned wait staff from the Bank St location, although the lady waiting our table was new. She was great!, although we did suffer from multiple staff checking in on us, which resulted in some of our order falling through the cracks and being a bit delayed. First day problems they are sure to sort out in the following days, so no big deal. We got our regular tonkotsu blacks, thick noodles, extra egg. Delicious. Always a pleasure to enjoy ramen broth without the wait and the hassle one would normally have to go through at the Bank St location. Best of all, as an opening day promotion, we were able to enjoy a dessert each or free! I got the mango sorbetto and my partner got the mango cheesecake - both delicious, but probably too small a portion to pay full price for in the future (unless we got the opening day promotion portions, which would be understandable). Overall, a great experience for us. Hopefully the next time we come, we'd be just as lucky (although I have heard personally that the line ups are very real at this location, so we'll see!)

I've really enjoyed the one on Bank Street so I was excited to hear another location was opening up on Merivale. This location is just as small as the one on Bank Street so there will most likely be a line up. We were a group of 5 so we waited around 30 mins which we didn't mind. I got the Shoyu Ramen with thick noodles as well as a side of Zangi (deep fried chicken). Everything was delicious. The food came out quickly too. Since the restaurant is on the smaller side, the food is quick to serve to get customers in and out in a reasonable time. The service was also good. The staff was really busy but still made the time to stop by the table to ask how our food was.

Okay, I can't get into anything else without saying how great the service here was. You're pleasantly greeted upon entry, service throughout your meal is quick and efficient and done with a smile, and you are pleasantly "greeted" again on your way out. Service is key and they really nail that here. This was only my second ever ramen experience, and my first visit to Sansotei. My previous ramen attempt had me feeling as though I am not a fan, but I have to say that my opinion has now been changed! My friend and I each ordered the Tonkotsu Black and we shared the Zangi (deep fried chicken). The chicken appetizer was really good, so crispy, lots of flavours. Be warned- it will be piping hot and fresh, so give it some time to cool down to avoid burning your tongues! The ramen was SO good and tasty. It was creamy, flavourful, and surprisingly filling. I really didn't think a soup would fill me up, but between the noodles, egg, and chashu- there was plenty and I was completely satisfied. Not so full, of course, that we couldn't try the mango cheesecake. Spoiler alert: it was delicious, too! This is a small little spot, a real Nepean gem, but definitely worth checking out!

I'm a fan of the intimate space, the fast and friendly service. The delicious food....my beef and rice dish was very tasty, and the chicken wings had just the right amount of heat. Shame that the only broth they offer is pork based. Would have been nice to have a vegetable alternative. Still left with a yummy tummy!

I placed an order for pick up over the phone as online ordering isn't an option (yet? Maybe soon since they just recently opened?) and my order was ready for the time I asked for without any issues. From what I could see in the restaurant, the decor was inviting and there were a few customers enjoying their dine in experience on a Tuesday evening. I got the Salmon Poké Bowl and asked for it to be spicy rather than regular. I got to choose which base I wanted between sushi rice, brown rice or greens. I picked the classic sushi rice. Overall, my bowl came to $28.25 including tax plus tip was extra. A bit pricey for a take out dish, but the sushi grade salmon was delicious and very fresh. There was a good amount of it, too, which I appreciated. It was a nice treat! I would love to try their Ahi Tuna Bowl next and eventually one of their ramen dishes. Currently they have 5 different ramen options and 5 different poké options available on their menu, so a small selection, but you only need a small but great tasting menu to be successful. They also have a variety of appealing appetizers and two dessert options. I'm curious to see if they will expand their menu in the future or keep it simple. Simplicity can be a nice thing when it works well! I will be back again soon!

It turns out, it's up the ramp on the left hand side. Once parked up here, there is a couple of glass doors and one of them takes you directly into the restaurant. Great to know for next time I'm in the area! As you walk down the stairs, you'll see it's renovated pretty nicely and not overly done. We grabbed a seat and were served with water pretty quickly. We had a look through the menu and they serve up more than just ramen. There's don, sukiyaki, code noodles as well as a bunch of sides. Since it was a pretty cold day, I knew I was going to settle on a ramen. I settled on the spicy tantan as I get that at many places. Service was good and the food came out pretty quickly. I started with the broth. It was alright. I got a second spoon with some chili oil and it that was OK too. I tried some of the ramen...it was OK. I don't know why but it reminded me of instant noodles so wasn't a huge fan of that especially at the price point. The egg was cooked well and the other toppings are decent as well. Portion size was standard but staff are super friendly and attentive. Even though the ramen I ordered was ok at best, it's nice to see more shops pop up around Ottawa. I'll definitely come back to try one of the dishes.

I tried the Spicy Tantan without the chili oil. Still got pretty strong kick. Noodles were good, ground pork was good (spicy), egg was fine, lettuce worked better than I expected, bamboo was good too - nice crunchy kick. Fungus was excellent. I wish there was a marinated ground pork that was not spicy. I could not tell if the broth was amazing as my lips were tingling already. Also tried the Hawanmushi - it takes 20-30minutes they said so glad we ordered early. Loved the egg custard but not a fan of the savory sauce. Loved the shrimp, crab, shitake toppings and wish there were more! Cool to try and I was okay with the price ($9) but as I didn't like the flavor combo - will not get again. Sadly they were out of deep fried brown sugar mochi. Dango was something I have always wanted to try - it tasted like bland mochi. I thought each color would taste different but they all pretty much taste the same. Texture is nice just like soft mochi. Loved the icing. Very reasonable price ($6). 2 skewers of 3 Dango each per order. Mint candies at the end are super delicious too!

The Korean fried chicken wings/drums were saucy, with something that tasted like a gochujang based sauce, as well as a ranch with dill. I didn't really taste the miso in the ranch too much, but I did enjoy the flavour profile. We also had the chicken karaage, which was lightly breaded and fried, and paired with a mayo. It was ok but a little plain. Next, we had the dan dan noodles. Dan dan noodles are traditionally very chewy have a nice bite to them but these noodles are a bit on the softer side. The flavour profile was good though. Lastly, we had the beast ramen. The smoked pork belly was nice and crisp and the soft boiled egg was nicely cooked. The noodles seem to be the same ones used in the dan dan noodles. It was enjoyable but the broth wasn't exactly ramen broth that I am used to. I would say that overall it was enjoyable, and prices were reasonable. Service was great. But there is definitely some room for improvement on the dishes. I would consider this more Asian fusion than a noodle bar.
